Celebrating with Prayer the 244th Birthday of the United States – Saturday, July 4Manny Yrique, the organizer of the annual July 4th Mass and Rosary for our country, which quickly became a diocesan event, shares the following with us.

For the past eight years, we have gathered here in the Diocese of Phoenix, on the 4th of July, to celebrate a special Mass and Rosary for our beloved country. This year, faced with Covid-19, cancelling the Mass and Rosary was not an option. The America that we know and love is under attack. Our enemy is much darker than a wild virus. Many American people themselves have become cold and callous with no regard for God. They have forgotten our National Motto: “In God We Trust.” We must pray and act now for the sake of our children and grandchildren.

This year Mass on the 4th of July will be celebrated at Mt. Claret Center at 8:30 a.m. with Auxiliary Bishop Eduardo Nevares. Rosary for the United States of America will follow. We will only seat 25 people and an additional 50 in the conference center. We must observe social distancing guidelines. We will Live Stream Mass and Rosary on FaceBook. Type in “Mt. Claret 4th of July Mass and Rosary” into your Search Bar. Share information so many can join in this special prayer for our County.

In his inauguration address, President John F. Kennedy said: “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Today our country is in most need of prayers to God and Blessed Mother Mary. Pray that our country and world may be healed from this pandemic and sin, especially from the sins of hardened hearts and disregard for human life.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. Our Lady of America, pray for us.

Manny, thank you for your words of inspiration.

Let July be a Month of Prayer for Our Country+ On July 4 attend Saturday morning Mass at your parish. Most parishes have resumed their morning Mass schedule. Reminder: this holiday is also the first Saturday of the month.+ Ifyouareconfinedtohome, thereareopportunitiesfordailyMass: EWTN, You Tube, Streaming Masses, Relevant Radio+ There are also Rosary opportunities: After Mass, praying the Rosary as an individual or with others. EWTN Rosaries, RFR internet any time, Relevant Radio, You Tube.

Our nation has been abundantly blessed. However, every day it seems more of our nation’s founding principles are being eroded: sanctity of all human life, marriage, and family values. Demonic forces are at play. PRAYER and FASTING do change hearts and bring conversions.

Realizing the power of prayer, we, the people, needtocommittoprayandsacrificeforourcountry.

Spiritual CommunionMy Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen - St. Alphonsus Liguori

First Native North American SaintKateri Tekakwitha, also known as Lily of the Mohawks, was born in NY in what is now Auriesville, about forty miles west of Albany. Tekakwitha was the child of a Mohawk Chief father and an Algonquin mother who was Christian. At age four she lost her entire family to smallpox and she was left with terrible scars. Kateri was then raised by her anti-Christian uncle. She refused to marry the suitors he presented to her.

This led to rejection by her uncle and her people. However, she began to lead a life inspired by the example of three Jesuit missionaries who came to her village. She became Catholic at age 19. She was known for her kindness, prayer, faith, and heroic suffering.

Pope Benedict XVI canonized Tekakwitha as a saint on October 21, 2012, the first North American Indian to become a saint. She died at the age of 24. Her feast day is July 14.

A Blessing Among UsFr. Edgar Schaefer, 97, a gift to the priesthood. In June Fr. Schaefer celebrated his 66 years of priesthood. For many years he gave talks for RFR. When he was a chaplain on an Alaskan cruise he recorded several interviews with Johnnette Benkovic.Father says Mass every day and prays four Rosaries. He says “Praying the Rosary will save America.”

One Nation Under God“If My people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, and forgive their sins, and will heal their land.”

Eucharistic Adoration: Great Hope for AmericaFr. Sean Davidson will be giving a three-part series on RFR in July on the power of Eucharistic Adoration and how it presents hope for America. The United States has more adoration chapels than the total in the whole world. Some believe the spiritual renewal of the world depends on America. Americans are challenged to lead the world spiritually.

+ Most Adoration Chapels in the Diocese are open.+ Holy hours can be made at home. Our Eucharistic picture can be an aid. See P 3.

A Timely Message from Joyce CoronelFrom the ongoing pandemic to the unjustified killing of a man by Minneapolis police to devastating riots across the country to a disastrous Supreme Court ruling that signaled a huge win for LGBT

activists, the last few months have been an exceedingly rough time for the United States of America.

Our Lord and our Blessed Mother warned us we would suffer much but they also reassured us. In John 16:33 Jesus tells us, “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart. I have overcome the world.” Our Lady of Fatima predicted persecution and even the annihilation of various nations, but said, “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.” Christiansarepeopleofhope;ourhopeisfirmlyrootedinHim whose death defeated death.

As we prepare to celebrate the birthday of our great nation, let us continue to thank God for the gift of freedom we enjoy. We would do well to also ask Him to help us use that freedom wisely and for good.

We may not be powerful political leaders or judges, but there is tremendous power in prayer and fasting. We have a crucial role to play in this battle for America’s soul; it is to embrace our cross with love as we pray and fast, begging God for conversion, healing and reconciliation here in our country and across the globe.

God bless America—and may America always bless and praise God. Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us!

Pictured is a large statue of Kateri Tekakwitha in St. Mary’s Basilica, Phoenix. Stop in and see it. Monday thru Friday, there is a 12 Noon Mass.

Save Lives of the UnbornU.S. Bishops remind us the most important issue

is the protection of life. Let us remember our unborn brothers and sisters and their mothers.

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of the unborn baby that I have

spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”

Also, let us adopt in prayer the mother who is contemplating an abortion.
