September 11, 2016– Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Among the primary themes in today’s gospel when we hear Jesus’ well-known parable of the Prodigal Son is forgiveness and the need to repent. But from a stewardship point of view what is also interesting is one of the secondary themes: the failure to use responsibly the gifts that have been so generously bestowed. The youngest son who demanded his inheritance and left home, broke no laws or religious commandments. His wrongdoing was that he wasted his inherited wealth, the abundant gifts given to him. His sin was in his extravagant living; squandering his gifts in pursuit of selfish pleasures. Good stewards acknowledge that everything they have comes from God, and they are required to cultivate these gifts responsibly. What are our God-given gifts? Do we use them responsibly? Do we exercise good stewardship over them? By ICSC.

Vigésimo Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario EMPEZANDO CON IMÁGENES DE LO QUE ESTÁ PERDIDO La primera pregunta de Jesús parece sencilla: "¿Qué persona entre ustedes teniendo cien ovejas y una de ellas está perdida no dejaría las noventa y nueve en el desierto e iría a buscar a la que se perdió hasta que la encuentre?" ¿Pero acaso muchos de los pastores tendrían temor de dejar a tantas ovejas seguras para buscar a una perdida? Más gentilmente, el pastor que Jesús pone como ejemplo regresa con la oveja sin que la lleve a empujones, al contrario, "se la pone sobre sus hombros con gran alegría" como la imagen del Buen Pastor de la cruz que usa el Papa Francisco. Luego Jesús pregunta a esos hombres piadosos y religiosos cuya oración diaria de Berakah bendice a Dios "por no haber nacidos mujer" que imaginen a una mujer preocupada por que perdió una moneda. ¿Podría Jesús ser desafiante con aquellos que se vanaglorian de ser muy religiosos pedirles que imaginen a Dios ser como las personas que ellos desprecian? Hoy, Jesús nos pide: si Dios es como ese pastor y esa mujer, ¿acaso no estamos todos como Dios? En este Año jubilar de la Misericordia, debemos seguir el ejemplo de Dios al amar "buscando cuidadosamente" lo que esté perdido, luego celebrar con los ángeles jubilosos cuando la misericordia de Dios, que a menudo nos encuentra, que encuentre a quien juzga a otras personas como tontas, indignas o insignificantes. UNA CONMOVEDORA IMAGEN DE UNA PERSONA PERDIDA ¿Qué tan "perdido" el hijo más joven estaba, malgastando el dinero de su padre, cuidando animales impuros y luego regresando a casa, sin haberse arrepentido sino solamente por interesado. Que tan generoso padre, corriendo a abrazar al hijo "perdido" y "encontrado", perdonado inmerecidamente y sin condiciones. From Blessed Teresa to Saint Teresa: A Stewardship Saint for September (By ICSC)

On September 4, 2016, Blessed Mother Teresa becomes Saint Teresa of Calcutta. She was a woman w h o g a v e u s a n extraordinary example of Christian discipleship and stewardship by her faith, simplicity and service to women and men without considering their race, religion or nationality. She was born Agnes Bojaxhiu in Albania on August 26, 1910,

and at age 18 went to Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto following what she discerned to be a call to become a missionary. She was sent to India in 1929, and began her novitiate in Darjeeling near the Himalayan mountains. Eight years later she made her solemn vows and took the name Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, the patron saint of missionaries. From there she taught at the Loreto convent school in Calcutta for almost twenty years. Though a dedicated educator, she was increasingly disturbed by the desperate poverty in Calcutta. On September 10, 1946, Sister Teresa had an extraordinary conversion experience, what she later described as “the call within the call.” While traveling by train from Calcutta to the Loreto convent in Darjeeling she experienced interior visions that led her to the conviction that Christ was calling her to serve “the poorest of the poor.”

In 1948 after a few months of medical training, Sister Teresa ventured out into the slums to tend to the needs of the destitute and starving. Her first year was very difficult. She had no income and had to resort to begging for food and supplies. She experienced loneliness, doubt and the temptation to return to the comfort of convent life. But at the beginning of 1949 she was joined by a group of young women who wished to be a part of her ministry. In 1950 “Mother” Teresa’s community was formally recog-nized by the Vatican. Its mission was to care for, in her own words, “the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, peo-ple that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone.” In 1952, she opened a hospice for the poor. Then she established several leprosy clinics throughout Calcutta, providing medication, bandages and food. In 1955, she created a home for orphans and home-less youth. The Missionaries of Charity soon began to attract both recruits and charitable donations, and by the 1960s had opened hospices, orphanages and leper homes all over India. Her first mission outside of India was in Venezuela in 1965, then in Rome, Tanzania and Austria. During the 1970s the congregation started missions in dozens of countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and the United States. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, departing a religious community with over 4,000 sisters operating 610 missions in 123 countries and aided by more than one million co-workers. Former U.N. Secretary-General, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, said of Blessed Mother Teresa: “She is the United Nations. She is peace in the world.”

In the First Reading from the Book of Exodus, God speaks to Moses. In the midst of revealing to Moses what the Israelites have done and how they have violated His trust in them, the Lord says, “I see how stiff-necked this people is.” As is often the case in Holy Scripture, the term “stiff-necked” has a basis in agriculture, and one with which we may not be familiar. Farmers at that time used the term “stiff-necked” to describe an ox or horse which did not respond to directions. When an animal like that would not move and resisted direction, the animal tended to stiffen and freeze, thus the term “stiff-necked” for one who is stubborn and uncooperative. God may consider us to be stiff-necked at times, might He not? In spite of the Lord’s appeals to us to trust Him and to follow Him, we sometimes stiffen and resist. Usually we do that because following the Lord may prove uncomfortable for us. God’s terms for us and His expectations of us may sometimes seem unreasonable and even impossible. Yet, that is the challenge of living stewardship as a way of life. It is not always easy, and it may put us in positions where we feel uncomfortable and even vulnerable. Moses pleads the case for his people to God and the Lord responds to Moses’ plea, his prayer, and Scripture tells us “So the Lord relented in the punishment.” We do need to trust the Lord, and we do need to pray to Him, as He will respond with love and mercy. Parish News and Announcements Dear Parishioners, Our bishop has asked us to follow the proper liturgical procedures during our liturgies and so we are doing our best to comply. One specific request is that we consecrate only the hosts we need for distribution at each Mass and not to bring over the reserve ciborium from the altar of reserve. Estimating the exact number of hosts needed is not an exact science. Therefore, there will be occasions when hosts will be broken in half. I understand this upsets some parishioners but please understand that our theology of the Eucharist embraces the understanding that even a particle of the host is the Body of Christ. It is for that reason that the presider is careful to collect and consume even the crumbs of hosts which remain after distribution. September is Healthy Aging Month “It’s never too late to find a new career, a new sport, passion, or hobby.” Do not act your age. Picture yourself at your best age and be it. Positive thinking goes a long way toward feeling better about yourself. Be positive in your conversations and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, change the conversation to something positive. Surround yourself with energetic, happy, positive people of all ages and you will be happier too. Walk like a vibrant, healthy person. Do you walk slowly because you have just become lazy or, perhaps, have a fear of falling? Make a conscious effort to take big strides, walk with your heel first, and wear comfortable shoes. Stand up straight! Hold your stomach in, have your shoulders back, chin up. You will look great and feel better. How’s your smile? Research shows people who smile more often are happier. Lonely? Volunteer your time, Take a class. Invite someone to meet for lunch, brunch, dinner, or coffee. Start walking not only for your health but to see the neighbors. Have a dog? You’ll be amazed how the dog can be a conversation starter.

Jesus spoke these words in His Sermon on the Mount. Therefore, as members of the Catholic Community, in attempting to live out our Church Mission, "to reach out to all in love," a Bereavement Support Group has been established in our parish. The goal of this group is to provide a process for healing within a safe and supportive environment. The MHT Bereavement Support Group meets once a month and these sessions are for individuals who have experienced loss through the death of a loved one.
