FORMED PICK OF THE WEEK The W ay of St. James. Over the lovely “Camino de Santiago,” the Way of St. James, which is the ancient route leading from the Pyrenees to the famous and ancient shrine of Santiago de Compostela, this documentary follows the journey of several pilgrims who differ in culture and religious faith, united only by a mysterious attraction towards the same spiritual destination. Across breathtaking landscapes, we experience a journey that is at once concrete, mystical and metaphorical in a continued alternation between past and present, between the history and legends that have fashioned the destiny of the Way of St. James. This ancient route that concludes at the shrine where St James the Apostle is buried is the most famous Christian

pilgrimage in the world. Now you can take this ancient journey through this beautifully produced film. Visit www.trinidadcatholic.formed.org to set up your FREE account and access this FREE movie!

Sunday of Yr. A – 07/19/2020. Ref.1st=Wis.12:13,16-19. 2

nd=Rom.8:26-27. 3rd=Mtt.13:24-43.

Theme: Overcoming the obstacles on our journey to God’s heavenly Kingdom After the parable of the seed & the sower last Sunday, Jesus today, gives us illustrations of the Kingdom of God with three parables. These parables underscore the awesomeness of our God, whose might, justice & mercy give us hope that our repentance will win us His salvation (1st reading) and who is ready to build on our ‘littleness’.

From the first parable, Jesus wants us to learn four main things: 1). The Loving plans of God for us are eternal: Jesus began this parable with ‘a man who sowed good seeds in his field’. He later told us that this man represented Himself – the Son of Man (Mtt.13:37). This is to show that God has always desired the best for us. This began at creation when He created us in His own image & likeness and gave us dominion over all creation (Gn.1:26-28), sustained in His relationship with Israel (Ex.19:5-6), emphasized through the prophets (Is.43:1-3) & fulfilled in Christ. 2). Our world is made up of Saints and Sinners: Because of His love & patience with us, God has allowed the coexistence of Saints & Sinners (the good seeds & the weeds) in our world. This is not because He wants the Good people to be discouraged, but that Sinners might have time to repent & be saved. This ‘time’, as we know, is not under our control but God’s. Remember the story of the rich fool, who was planning how to enjoy his fortunes without knowing that God was going to take his life that very night (Lk12:16-20). This is expressed in H. W. Longfellow’s ‘Psalm of life’ (v.4); ‘Art is long, and time is fleeting, And our hearts though stout and brave, Still like muffled drums, are beating funeral marches to the grave’. Hence, let us make good use of our time because, ‘the time for salvation is now’ (2Cor.6:2b). 3). The Devil is constantly at work: Jesus wants us to know that Satan is constantly at work in the world; to turn joys into sorrows, replace good with evil & to make us fall into sin. To achieve these, he comes at our weakest moments. That was why Christ pointed out that he came ‘while everyone was asleep’ to sow the weeds (Mtt.13:25). Thus, Jesus wants us to be always vigilant as St. Peter advises; ‘Be sober and alert because, your enemy – the devil, is prowling around like a roaring Lion, looking for someone to devour…’ (1Pt.5:8-9). Be watchful! 4). There is time for Judgement & reward: This is the time of harvest, when the bad will be separated from the good. At this time, those who have stood firm amidst the challenges of this life through their sacrifices & good lives, would merit great rewards from God. This is the central message of Jesus on ‘the beatitudes’ (Mtt.5:1-12). We are therefore, encouraged to sustain the good we are doing & not to grow weak in resisting sin so that we would ‘shine like the sun in the kingdom of our God.’ (Mtt.13:43a). In the two last parables, Jesus teaches us that our little and consistent efforts count. A good assessment of events in our world today reveals the enormity of challenges faced by the faithful – attacks on the sanctity of life, family values, growing secularism, etc. These could discourage us or make us grow passive with the thought that our ‘little’ efforts would make no difference. But Jesus wants to correct that impression with the parables of the Mustard seed and Yeast. These were small & little but were able to meet and even surpass their expectations. Hence, Jesus wants us to know that God is ever ready to build on our ‘little’ efforts to ignite the needed transformation in our lives, families, job environment and society. After all, it is by the Grace & Spirit of God that conversions & spiritual transformations happen. Thus, St. Paul tells us (2nd reading); ‘The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we don’t know how to pray as we ought but the Spirit himself intercedes for us…’ (Rom.8:26). Hence, out of our littleness or small efforts, God’s greatness blossoms. It is possible that the ‘little’ you have not done or stopped doing will bring the needed positive change & renewal that many are expecting. My dear friends, the realization of the Kingdom of God among us and its attainment in eternity, are the good plans of God for us. But our enemy – Satan, is working tirelessly to deny us this happiness. We must not allow him to do so.

The good news is that God is on our side. His patience & mercy have given us hope of forgiveness & salvation. Let us hold unto these so that we shall be among ‘the righteous who will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of God our Father’ (Mtt.13:43). May your Kingdom come, oh Lord!

Remain blessed. Fr. Tim.
