Jazz “Olympians”The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra (USA)

Top series of the Moscow International Performing Arts Centre, this season pre-sents jazz “Olympians” from the USA and Sweden.

Classical swing, R&B, fank, fusion and more – the au-dience will be treated with a wide range of styles per-formed by the musicians who play leading roles in the modern world of jazz.

The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra is unusual in that it has three leaders: drum-mer Jeff Hamilton, altoist Jeff Clayton, and bassist John Clayton. While Hamil-ton (who has played regular-ly with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Monty Alexander, Gene Harris, and the L.A. Four) really drives the band, and Jeff Clayton (whose sound is inspired by Can-nonball Adderley) is one of the orchestra’s top soloists, it is John Clayton’s colourful and unpredictable

arrangements that really give this big band its own personality.

In addition, Clayton (who was formerly with Count Ba-sie) is a very talented soloist, particularly when bowing.

The swinging orchestra, filled with top Los Angeles players (including such so-loists as Rickey Woodard, Charlie Owens, Bobby Bry-ant, Snooky Young, Oscar Brashear, George Bohanon, Thurman Green, and Bill Cunliffe) can hold its own with any other big band of the ‘90s and 2000s, as shown on its two Capri sets (Groove Shop and Heart and Soul) and its Lake Street re-lease Absolutely.

Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul We often write about clas-sical music concerts in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, it is time to talk about this beautiful historic place in details.

Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul Church is a Luther-an Cathedral in Moscow, which is the main cathedral of the regional Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Eu-ropean part of Russia.

Community of Saints Peter and Paul, was established in 1626 when the old Mos-cow Lutheran congregation seceded new communi-ty under the leadership of Pastor Jacob Neuenburg. In 1632 the first church of the community in Chistie Prudy area was demolished. The second church stood a little over 10 years.

In 1694, in the presence of Peter the Great laid the foundation for the construc-tion of a new stone church with a bell tower. The con-secration of the church took place in 1695. It was called the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, or simply “New Church”.

This church burned three times (in 1711, 1737 and 1748), but it is always was

restored. However, after a severe fire in 1812, when the whole of Moscow was destroyed, the recovery was not possible. In 1814, the community has found ref-uge in a temporary chapel.

In 1817, over 33,000 rubles congregation bought the es-tate Lopukhins near Pokrov-ka Street in Kosmodamian-sky Pereulok

(from 1922th - Starosadsky Pereulok). The means of the King of Prussia Friedrich Wil-helm III, as well as Emperor Alexander I, to make a loan in the amount of 40,000 ru-bles, of which the communi-ty had to pay off only 33,000 rubles, began restructuring the purchased home as a church, the construction of the dome and cross. August, 1819 the new building was

consecrated.

In February 1837 the church organ was first heard.

Parish of Sts. Peter and Paul was the largest among Protestant congregations in Moscow. Among the com-munity were many wealthy industrialists, financiers and representatives of noble families. When in the middle of the XIX century the num-ber of parishioners has ex-ceeded 6000, it was decid-ed to reconstruct the church by the plan of the architect A. Meyngarda in neo-Gothic style, which was completed in January 1862. In 1863 the tower was raised bell donat-ed by Kaiser Wilhelm I.

By the end of the XIX centu-ry the community numbered 17 thousand people (14,000 Germans, 2,000 Latvians, Estonians, 600, 150 Finns and Swedes). Services were held not only in German but also in the Latvian and Esto-nian languages. Due to the increasing number of parish-ioners was a question on the restructuring of the church with a view to its expansion. In 1898 came the decision on the construction of the church, designed for 1700 seats, which in 1903-1905 were carried out according to the plan of the architect VA Kossov - academician and one of the designers of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior. After refusing VA Kossov, supervised the con-struction

of the church engineer AF Loleyt. On December 1905 the church was consecrat-ed.In 1924, with the transfer of the capital from St. Peters-burg to Moscow, the Ca-thedral became the main Lutheran cathedral of the entire Soviet Union. Soon began a crackdown. From rich cathedral of Saits Peter and Paul in the first years of Soviet power were removed many of the val-ues and the number of pa-rishioners starts to reduce. In November 1936 Pastor Alexander drifts along with members of the church council were arrested and executed, and the service stopped. In this community the exist-ence ceased.

Since that time, services were held every Sunday and in 1992 the community has its first permanent pastor.

In July 1992, the decision of the Government of Mos-cow Lutheran cathedral was transferred to the building then in stages a few build-ings of the complex.

In 2004, after much effort found sponsors among in-dividuals and among organ-izations. This made possible to begin large-scale work on restoration of the cathedral in its historical form, taking into account the latest tech-nical requirements.

During the period from 2004 to 2008, Hall was released from the ceilings and parti-tions, restored dome, walls and heavily damaged col-umn.

In 1938 the building passed to the Krasnogvardeisky district council under a cin-ema. Cinema was open in May 1939.

The council then gave it to the studio “Diafilm”, which made alterations to the building, resulting in the hall was divided into several floors and the interior of the cathedral was completely destroyed. For the VI World Festival of Youth and Stu-dents in 1957, was demol-ished the cathedrals spire.

Legally, the Evangelical Lu-theran Church in Russia never closed, but due to the repression virtually ceased to exist by the end of 1938.

50 years later, in 1988, the church again was constitut-ed headed by Bishop Har-ald Kalnins. In 1990-1991, a new page is opened in the community of Saits Peter and Paul. In May 1991, an initiative group applied for registration in the Justice Department of the Moscow Soviet and on June 7th of that year the community re-ceived a certificate of regis-tration.

Studio “Diafilm”, which at that time disposed all the complex of buildings was ready to allocate a room for the divine services. On Sep-tember 1991, Bishop and Pastor Kalnins Stefan Raed-er made the first service in the screening room studio is located on the site of the present organ choirs.

December 18, 2005, the day of the centenary of the con-secration of the first, made the rededication of the throne.

In July 2011, the students of the Riga Art School estab-lished in the cathedral, cre-ated from the valuable spe-cies of oak, linden and pine trees, the new neo-Gothic altar with carved pointed arches, hanging chair with canopy, new font, paschal candle stand, and balus-trade separating altar area from the nave, thus trans-forming the altar of the ca-thedral.

Today the cathedral holds weekly Mass as usual in German and Russian lan-guages, and on weekends - remarkable musical con-certs of classical music. This magnificent place will engulf you into the history of the beautiful melodies.
