Pierre Lacotte - “La Sylphide”Ballet

La Sylphide is an absolute symbol of the romantic ballet. It was in Sylphide that Maria Taglioni became the first ballerina to truly dance en pointe. Taglioni’s heroine did indeed seem a supernatural being, not a woman but a spirit defying the law of gravity. The dancer would slide across the stage as if never touching the floor. She would freeze for an instant in a flying arabesque as if propped by a magic force on the point of her curved foot. It was that particular Sylphide, which was staged for her by her father Filippo Taglioni, that another French choreographer, Pierre Lacotte, carefully recreated about a hundred and fifty years later.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky "Eugene Onegin"Opera

This opera was the first production of the school on Leontievsky Lane led by the great theatre performer, Konstantin Stanislavsky. The new production of Eugene Onegin appeared in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre repertoire within the very first season following the Theatre’s reconstruction. Its creators treated the Stanislavsky’s production with maximum respect and yet did not copy it. Psychological development of the characters remained utterly detailed, and even the columns were retained as the main element of the stage set. What did change was the air that the main characters breathe. It was an Onegin of the 21st century, the one that is contemporary for today’s audiences.

George Balanchine “Jewels”Ballet

The "Jewels" defined the direction of the development of choreography in the 20th century. George Balanchine, who is George Melitonovich Balanchivadze, was the first in the history of classical ballet to give up lush decorations, cumbersome expensive costumes and even neglected an integral component - the libretto. Inspired and financially supported by the Claude Arpel jewellery company Van Cleef & Arpels, the choreographer creates a plastic embodiment of shimmering stones, in honour of which the three parts of the production are entitled.

Hector Berlioz “La Damnation De Faust”Opera

A grandiose musical drama based on the tragedy of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is the pinnacle of the work of the French romantic composer Hector Berlioz. Text composer treats the poet freely, making Faust a romantic hero. And even the death of young Margarita does not bring him redemption. The very name of the drama emphasizes the inevitable death of the hero.

Ilya Demutsky "A Hero of Our Time"Ballet

"A Hero of Our Time" is a unique collaboration between choreographer Yuri Possokhov and theatre director Kirill Serebrennikov. The Bolshoi’s artistic director Sergei Filin suggested the two work together on a new ballet, and Serebennikov suggested Mikhail Lermontov’s novel as the subject. They adapted three out of the five short stories in the book for the Bolshoi’s new stage. “It was interesting to me to keep up with psychology of heroes and to do so that the audience in the hall understood why each of them makes this or that decision. In the ballet Rachmaninov and Lutoslawski's music sounds. Tchaikovsky was the first idea, of course, but his works were so often used in the ballet that I decided to look for other paints. The Cherry Orchard was produced to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the play that has determined the overall tone for the entire 20th century drama. Pyotr Tchaikovsky “The Queen of Spades”Opera

Highly strong atmosphere of the opera lends a strong touch of Dostoevsky. It is felt in the character of German with his passions and tragedy, his outsider position among upper class rich people as well as in the role of Saint-Petersburg in Tchaikovsky’s opera… His Petersburg is practical and morose, it would not accept strangers. There is no way to conquer it…

Cover Story

The monument of Yuri Gagarin

On April 12, 1961, at 9:07 a.m. Moscow time, the Vostok 1 spacecraft blasted off from the Soviets' launch site. This day, 27-year-old Yurii Gagarin became the first person to travel into space. Because no one was certain how weightlessness would affect a pilot, the spherical capsule had little in the way of on board controls; the work was done either automatically or from the ground. If an emergency arose, Gagarin was supposed to receive an override code that would allow him to take manual control, but Sergei Korolov, chief designer of the Soviet space program, disregarded protocol and gave it to the pilot prior to the flight.

Over the course of 108 minutes, Vostok 1 travelled around the Earth once, reaching a maximum height of 203 miles (327 kilometers). Over Africa, the engines fired to bring Gagarin back to Earth. The craft carried ten days worth of provisions in case the engines failed and Gagarin was required to wait for the orbit to naturally decay, but they were unnecessary. Gagarin re-entered Earth's atmosphere, experiencing forces up to eight times the pull of gravity, but remained consciousness.

Vostok 1 had no engines to slow its re-entry or a way to land safely. About four miles up (seven kilometers), Gagarin ejected and parachuted to Earth. In order for the mission to be counted as an official spaceflight, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the governing body for aerospace records, had determined that the pilot must land with the spacecraft. Soviet leaders indicated that Gagarin had touched down with the Vostok 1, and did not reveal that he had ejected until 1971. Regardless, Gagarin still set the record as the first man to leave Earth's orbit and travel into space.

The monument to Yurii Gagarin (sculptor – P.I. Bondarenko, architects – Ya.B. Belopolsky, F.M. Gazhevsky, designer - A.F. Sudakov) was unveiled on July 4, 1980. The one of the highest monuments in Moscow resembles rocket rushing into the sky.

Riffled 40 meters long pedestal is crowned with 33 meters long astronaut figure, casted of titanium. At the bottom of the sculpture, there is landing section of spacecraft Vostok.
