The capstone of IM’s campus, the Brigitte and Bashar Kalai Plaza of Respect, will open to the public in April 2019. The Plaza will be a place of connection, inspiration and education in the heart of Houston. It is an outdoor space extending from IM’s headquarters at 3303 Main. Three Pillars of Light within will honor three of Houston’s most iconic faith leaders, who have been champions of civil rights and interfaith understanding for decades- Archbishop Fiorenza, Rabbi Samuel Karff and Reverend William A. Lawson. Each Pillar will include a “trigger” that allows visitors to interact with images of the trio via an app on their phones or tablet. Brigitte and Bashar Kalai, the lead donors to the Plaza, were inspired by their own Muslim faith and their desire to foster interfaith dialogue. “We are deeply grateful to the Kalais for making this transformative gift”,
says IM President and CEO Martin Cominsky. IM’s other lead donors to the Plaza are: Patti and Richard Everett, the Clark and Charlene Thompson Foundation, PBK Architects, Shell, and Gensler. The Plaza will not only be a beautiful public space on Main Street, but a venue to host educational and community events that foster respect and break down barriers. Naming opportunities are still available on the Plaza. For more information, contact Maria Magee at [email protected].

CENTERPOINT ENERGY WARMS HOMES, HEARTS
OPERATION IMPACT HELPS PREPARE SENIORS FOR HURRICANE SEASON
Thank you to CenterPoint Energy for sponsoring this year’s Winter Meals project! Thanks to their lead gift, over 4,000 Meals on Wheels clients received shelf-stable food and bottled water this winter to
use in case icy weather prevents our drivers from delivering their routes. This project was a lifesaver last winter when IM had to close several times due to ice.
On Saturday, May 4th, IM staff and volunteers will deliver nonperishable food and bottled water to over 4,200 homebound seniors in preparation for Hurricane Season. These supplies will sustain our seniors in the event that a storm keeps our drivers from reaching them. We will have pickup sites throughout Harris and Galveston counties, for volunteers to access. Close to 2,000 volunteers are needed for this critical project! For more info, please contact Cecilia at [email protected] or visit www.imgh.org/impact2019.
BRIGITTE AND BASHAR KALAI PLAZA OF RESPECT TO OPEN THIS SPRING
[ 2 ] [ 3 ]
Thanks to everyone who contributed to our Meals on Wheels Holiday Project. Your support enabled us to give all our clients a festive gift bag filled with a warm item like socks or gloves, a fun item like puzzles, and full-sized toiletries. In some cases, this may be the only gift a senior receives. Our Volunteer Manager, Cecilia Pham, says: “We are so grateful to be able to give our seniors a holiday gift. It means so much to them!”Special thanks to Network Volunteer of Los Angeles, which donated 1,900 bags filled with gift items! The gifts were donated by Dow Chemical.
SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER FROM THE CEO:This spring, IM will dedicate a very special new space on our campus – The Brigitte and Bashar Kalai Plaza of Respect. This outdoor plaza at our 3303 Main headquarters will offer inspiration, community connection, and interfaith education in the heart of Midtown. Prominently featured will be three Pillars of Light honoring the legacy of three
iconic faith leaders- Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza, Rabbi Samuel Karff, and Reverend William A. Lawson. The couple who made the lead gift for the Plaza, Brigitte and Bashar Kalai, are of the Muslim faith. This project encapsulates IM’s strong foundation of interfaith collaboration.“Respect” is at the heart of everything we do. Respect for elders, and for the tenet “feed the hungry” shared by every faith, drives our Meals on Wheels program. Respect for human dignity, and for the practice of “welcoming the stranger” embraced by many religious traditions, guides our work with refugees. Respect for the time and talent of volunteers, and
the needs of worthy charities in our community, urged us to welcome Volunteer Houston into our family. And, respect for differences is at the heart of our Interfaith Relations work.IM’s annual gala, the Tapestry Gala, is so named because its founders viewed our community as a rich and diverse tapestry. Tapestries are woven from thousands of single threads, threads of different colors and textures that together find strength and beauty. I like to think of Houston, our nation’s most diverse city, as a tapestry. The thread that holds us together is respect. A single thread may seem inconsequential, but the slightest tug on that thread can unravel the entire thing.Respect is IM’s work, day in and day out. The Plaza will be a concrete symbol of that, while you – our donors and volunteers- are living examples of respect put into practice. Thank you for being part of the amazing tapestry we call IM and of being the single threads that form “the strength of shared beliefs”.Thank you.

Our young professionals’ group, IMpulse, had a special opportunity on the evening of February 5th to meet Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and City Councilwoman Amanda Edwards. The culmination of the event was a City Proclamation commending IMpulse, and other young leaders and professionals in Houston, and expressing the City’s appreciation to young adults as they lead Houston into the future.“We are honored that Mayor Turner would take the time to visit with young professionals from a variety of backgrounds,”
shares Bethany Boucher, IM Program Coordinator. “The purpose of IMpulse is to bring young professionals together for networking, conversation and community service, and we are very pleased to have the Mayor’s support.”For more information email [email protected].

Harris Health is the third healthcare system in Houston to partner with IM through our Hospital to Home program. A cost-saving partnership for high-risk patients, Hospital to Home works with hospitals and other healthcare providers to provide an extra level of care to high-risk patients. Our drivers deliver medically appropriate meals and a wellness check for these patients, resulting in fewer hospital re-admissions. Harris Health has branded their partnership “Meals with Heart”. Other participating hospital systems are Houston Methodist and Memorial Hermann. We are especially grateful to our lead sponsor, the Robert L. Cook Charitable Fund. For more information, contact Beth Schibley at [email protected].
HARRIS HEALTH A NEW HOSPITAL TO HOME PARTNER
IM Volunteer Manager Cecilia Pham was excited to receive so many gifts for our seniors!
At 81 years old, Jessie Hearne has been hit hard by the effects of aging. In addition to a history of strokes, diabetes and blindness in one eye, she now finds herself barely able to walk around her modest one-bedroom home- even with a walker. What’s more, she struggled to care for her husband, Willie, who had Alzheimer’s disease.A grateful Meals on Wheels recipient, Jessie cannot express how grateful she feels for her daily meals and visits. She looks forward to seeing her driver, Linda, each day. “She saved us”, Jessie says.Jessie recalls younger days when she worked as a dishwasher, waitress, and then a cook at small neighborhood restaurants. In fact, she met Willie when waitressing. They soon married and started a family. One morning in fall 2018, Jessie’s legs gave out as she was washing her hands at the sink, causing her to fall.
Her husband Willie, who had a blood pressure disorder, jumped up to help her. But his quick response caused him to faint before he could reach his wife.Lying on the floor, neither Jessie nor Willie could answer the door when Linda came that day with their meals. Concerned, Linda contacted the couple’s son, who called an ambulance. Both Jessie and Willie spent weeks in the hospital, spending their first nights apart in over 61 years of marriage.Sadly, Willie did not recuperate and passed away in winter. Jessie returned to their home and relies on Meals on Wheels now more than ever. “It’s been a hard life,” she admits, “but it’s been a blessed life.” Jessie is one of over 4,300 seniors served by IM’s Meals on Wheels program. Thanks to your support, she can count on a daily meal and visit.

On April 30th at The Post Oak Hotel, IM will celebrate five decades of bringing diverse groups together for dialogue, collaboration and service at its 2019 Tapestry Gala. This inspiring evening will reminisce “through the years” and also look to an exciting future.
This year’s Tapestry honorees are Brigitte and Bashar Kalai, lead donors for the Plaza of Respect, IM Board members, and generous philanthropists to many worthy causes. The inaugural Spirit of Respect Award will be given to Rabbi Roy Walter, Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Emanu El. Event co-chairs are: Shaista and Shahzad Bashir, Bimla and Swatantra Jain, Dr. Sushma and Devinder Mahajan, Lorraine and Ed Wulfe, and Nihala and Shaukat Zakaria.
Tables start at $5,000 and tickets at $500. For information, contact Brandi at [email protected].
On February 16th, philanthropic animal lovers gathered at the Hotel Zaza in Houston’s Museum District for IM’s 6th annual Best Friends Brunch benefiting Animeals. The Valentine-themed event featured a pet fashion show, a vendor marketplace and silent auction, and a cat video contest.
This year’s Brunch honored Mandy Kao and the Kao Family. Co-Chairs were Susan Boggio and Dr. Yasmine Haddad. Honorary Co-Chairs were Brigitte Kalai, Dr. Sippi Khurana and Paula Sutton.
Casey Curry emceed this fun and feisty event, and guests enjoyed a vendor marketplace before the program. Vendors included: Joy Sewing, author of “Ava and the Prince” children’s book, and Ludmila Ivanova Jewelry. Meals on Wheels client Martina Lopez spoke movingly of the impact Animeals has had on her life and the lives of her beloved dogs, Fred and Zooey.
Thank you to our major sponsors: the Kao Family, Susan and Dan Boggio, Dr. Yasmine Haddad, Brigitte and Bashar Kalai, Dr. Sippi and Ajay Khurana, Paula Sutton and Bill Gross, Linda and Fred Marshall, and Don Sanders.

REFUGEE YOUTH FIND BREATHING SPACE IN LEISURE TOWER PROJECTTwenty of our refugee youth are taking part in a unique project called Leisure Tower One, an art installation created by artist and activist Selven O’Keef Jarmon.
Leisure Tower One is a social sculpture- a collaborative piece in which participants work as partners to string beads into panels that will be mounted on seven custom designed rocking chairs. Each chair will be comprised of one of the letters of the word “LEISURE.”
The artist is inviting the viewer to discover that the range of the meaning of the word “LEISURE” expands far beyond vacation or free time. It also includes breathing space, respite, ease, peace and freedom. For refugees, reaching a distant land after a long migration is a relief.
Special thanks to project sponsors UNICEF USA and The Levant Foundation.
MAKING MUSIC OF THE REFUGEE EXPERIENCEIM is proud to partner with the Houston Symphony on the “Resilient Sounds” project, which celebrates the determination and hope of Houston’s refugee communities. The project, overseen by composer Jimmy Lopez, paired six refugees with college aged composers from University of Houston and Rice. Each student composed music inspired by the refugees’ stories, experiences, feelings and culture. Each composition was further matched with other artists including a poet, film maker, creative writer, choreographer, violinist and a dancer. Resilient Sounds will be performed on June 11th.
Thank you to the Charity Guild of Catholic Women for their $5,000 gift to Refugee Services! This donation will provide holiday gifts for refugee children.

In honor of former President George H.W. Bush, IM’s Volunteer Houston – the local Points of Light affiliate- collected 360 pairs of colorful socks for seniors at the City of Houston’s December 3rd tribute to the 41st President. In addition to honoring the former Commander in Chief’s love of socks, VH hosted the drive to help the seniors served by Meals on Wheels. The warm gifts were distributed just in time for the December holidays.
Representatives from IM’s Volunteer Houston, Harris County and the City of Houston came together on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January to launch a new collaboration that calls all citizens to volunteer in the community.
Echoing Dr. King’s calls for service, Eleanor Gates, Director of Volunteer Houston; Paul Green with the City’s Office of Volunteer Initiative Programs; and Stevee Franks, Recovery Specialist with the Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, packed breakfast bags for IM’s Meals on Wheels seniors.
The trio introduced an initiative called “Register. Volunteer. Report.” to encourage community members to volunteer with local nonprofit agencies. They asked people not only to register to volunteer on their respective websites and then to volunteer, but also to report their hours. By doing so, individuals can help secure local funding for additional volunteer projects.
“Houston and Harris County nonprofits are always in need of volunteers, and thankfully the area has thousands of residents with skills and interests that can help transform our community through volunteerism, “ said Gates. “We are happy to collaborate with the City of Houston and Harris County to inspire people to give of their time and talent.”
In 2018, Volunteer Houston registered over 30,000 new volunteers and placed volunteers in nearly 17,000 projects with participating nonprofits.

Hundreds of attendees heard touching tales and a call to action from UNICEF USA President and CEO Caryl Stern at IM’s second annual Gershenson Lecture, held on March 5 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Sponsored by our women’s initiative, IMpower, this community-wide event featured Stern speaking about her work with UNICEF and also a special fireside chat with her and Lisa Falkenberg, a Pulitzer Prize Journalist and now Houston Chronicle’s Editor of Opinion. Stern shared her deep understanding of the challenges of refugees and the need to help children throughout our world. The Gershenson Lecture was established in honor of Elliot Gershenson, IM’s President Emeritus, to present speakers on topics related to respect and understanding. Special thanks to our Title Sponsors: Ann and J. Kent Friedman, the Esther Friedman Family Foundation, MAREK, and the Center for Houston’s Future.
