Here is a riddle for you: What costs less than $4 a month, but is much more valuable? If you guessed a family membership to the Arts Center, you guessed right! People are usually stunned to discover that a membership to the Arts Center is so inexpensive. When juxtaposed against other costs, it is even more apparent. Movie tickets cost around $8 per person. One large cappuccino costs nearly $4. And, a paperback novel costs over $13. Yet, an Arts Center membership for a family is less than $4 a month.

You may be wondering, what does a family get for this $45 once-a-year fee. Free admission for both the award-winning Buell Children’s Museum and the Helen T. White Galleries. You will receive discount ticket prices on the high-quality performances of the Children’s Playhouse Series and Center Stage. You save 10% on all Sangre de Cristo School of Arts classes, and purchases at both the Arts Center and Children’s Museum gift shops. You save 10% on all art purchases from our galleries, including the Own Your Own Art Show and Representing the West. An Arts Center membership clearly has benefits.

While the benefits for your family are fabulous, your membership is also a great investment in the Arts Center. Arts Center staff works hard writing grants and raising funds. However, many of those monies are tied to specific programs. Your membership dollars work very hard for the operation of the Arts Center. Arts Center memberships bolster the operations and the people who run all the programs the community loves, from the Children’s Museum to the afterschool program, from the performing arts events to our school of dance.

With all of this in mind, Arts Center memberships make great gifts. There are even special prices for grandparents, singles and students. Call 295-7200 to purchase your gift membership. We will even gift wrap it for you.

Sincerely,

Daniel J. Lere, Ed.D.Chair, Board of Trustees

Buell Children’s MuseuMHow to m a k e

Celebrate creatively this holiday season. decorate gifts with gift tags fashioned by your child or grandchild. (a great way to channel all that energy, when it is too cold to play outside!)

1. raid the kitchen for your favorite holiday cookie cutters.

2. gather construction paper, index cards or any sturdy paper.

3. Using a nicely sharpened pencil, trace the outside of the cookie cutter on a piece of paper.

4. remove the cookie cutter and make sure that you have a completed shape.

5. Using scissors – and some adult assistance – cut around the shape you have traced.

6. decorate your gift tag. a couple of ideas: trace the edge of the shape with a metallic pen. or, use pastels around the edge and blend into the center with a paper towel. of course, washable glitter glue or holiday rubber stamps are always good ideas.

7. Create a hole about ¼ inch from the edge using a hole punch.

8. thread ribbon, yarn or twine through the hole to attach to the package.

9. remember: on the tag, write who the gift is to and who the gift is from.

this hands-on-project and gobs of other holiday activities can be enjoyed at the Buell Children’s Museum, starting november 20.

FINDING ONE: most colorado schools offer some arts education.

The majority of public schools in Colorado offer some formal arts education to most of their students: 93% of elementary schools, 86% of middle schools, and 83% of high schools. Arts education spanned all geographic and socioeconomic differences in the state’s public schools.

Elementary students, on average, spend about 120 minutes per week on formal arts education taught by mostly experience, certified instructors.

FindinG tWo: colorado schools that offer more arts education have higher academic achievement and lower dropout rates.

Arts education is linked to academic success, according to the study: “Students who do well in reading, writing and science attend schools that offer a rich and varied arts program — regardless of students’ racial composition or socioeconomic status.”

The study identified two indirect benefits to arts education that may explain this link. First of all, schools with strong arts tend to have teachers who are more in tune to students’ learning styles. And, secondly, arts keep students in school. Schools with more arts education have lower dropout rates. The study cites arts as a motivating factor for many students. Arts also give students confidence, which can help them in more academic subjects.

F i n d i n G tHrEE: school leaders say finding the time to offer the arts is their biggest challenge.

Nearly 75 percent of principals surveyed recognize the importance of arts education but identified time as the biggest barrier to offering arts in their schools.

Leadership at the individual school makes a difference, as “There is a striking variety in the depth and breadth of arts education offered among individual schools within a school district.”

FindinG Four: The study shows students’ access to the arts in colorado’s public schools needs to improve.

While most public schools offer some arts education, the study states, “access for every child remains a challenge.” Nearly 30,000 children attend schools without any arts programs. Fifty-three percent of Colorado high schoolers are not taking art classes. Rural areas offer less arts education than urban/suburban. The study notes, “This may reflect less access to art museums, theater venues and dance performances as well as difficulty in attracting arts teachers.”

This fall, the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Council on the Arts commissioned a study on arts education in Colorado public schools. Here are their findings:

What are the benefits of an arts education?

Students exposed to formal arts education score higher on CSaP tests in reading, writing and scienceSchools with formal arts education programs have lower drop out rates.arts education better prepares students for future education, work and life.arts education encourages parental involvement in school.arts education nutures and develops creativity and imagination – necessary work force skills for the new economy.

Promoting the production & enjoymentof the performing arts

for the purposes of economic development& an enriched quality of life in Pueblo

EExperience the diverse and complex history of Pueblo through the lyrics and music of artist Daniel Valdez. Best known for the movies La Bamba and Zoot Suit, Valdez has written, composed and is directing the premier production of Song of Pueblo: An Oratorio.

An oratorio is “a movie, concert and theatrical performance in one,” says Valdez. “It’s something for the eyes, ears and soul.” The 90-minute production will be a crash course in the history of an American town, summarizes Valdez.

“I couldn’t have picked a more poignant image of an American town,” Valdez told The Pueblo Chieftain. “Pueblo’s tenacity for survival — that’s what intrigues me. This town carries that spirit with it.” He is capturing Pueblo’s story by focusing on four elements: environment, frontier, people and events.

To create the oratorio, Valdez had the opportunity to interview a number of people from historians to longtime residents. He made an effort to speak to representatives from all of the varied ethnic groups in Pueblo. He described this experience as, “The town itself is the teacher. I’m the student.”

A“All my life I’ve dreamed of this,” says Grace Lobato, who will be portraying Clara in this year’s popular Nutcracker, The Ballet.

Now 14-years-old, Grace experienced The Nutcracker for the first time as a three-year-old audience member. So awed by the annual holiday production, she convinced her parents to enroll her in the Dance Exploration class at the Arts Center with instructor Donna Stinchcomb.

When she was in kindergarten, Grace had the opportunity be an angel in an Arts Center production of The Nutcracker. Every year the little dancers wait in a very busy back stage, where they have the opportunity to watch the Sugar Plum Fairy, the Snow Queen, and of course, Clara.

Backstage one evening, Mary Lee Lobato, Grace’s mother, mentioned to Artistic Director Karen Schaffenburg, “Grace really loves this and wants to be Clara.”

Despite the hectic environment, Schaffenburg took time to tell Grace, “That is a wonderful goal, but it takes a lot of hard work.”

“It impressed me – with how busy Karen was – that she took the time to talk to Grace and encourage her. Ever since then, Grace has been committed to dance,” says Lobato.

Lobato also credits the buddy program that Schaffenburg created for The Nutcracker. This program pairs the older dancers, who often hold the starring roles, with younger dancers. The older dancers write notes of encouragement and sometimes serve as mentors and role models for their younger counterparts.

Hard work is also an essential ingredient. Grace has ballet class four days a week, plus her Nutcracker rehearsals. Lobato marvels at all her daughter has accomplished and the physical strength she possesses, “I am just so proud to watch her.”

PatChwork Bird» By Karin Larkin, Ph.D., Arts Center Curator

What do bird watching, quilts and fine art have in common? One word Radeaux. His latest series of paintings, Patchwork Bird, seamlessly stitch his love of birds and pattern with his magnificent artistic talent.

A native of Pueblo, Radeaux attended St. Olaf College in Northfield Minnesota, to study biology. But, it was in an art history class where he first realized his true calling — to create art. His topic of choice has always been animals and specifically birds. His love of birds started with a trip to the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge as a teen. Radeaux describes the impact of that trip: “It was spring migration time and you could drive right up to golden eagles, shorebirds and ducks. It was eye-opening.”

In fact, Radeaux has been bird-watching longer than he has been creating art. He did not fuse these two interests until after college when he made his first attempt to draw a bird. He describes that as an unmitigated disaster, but he persevered. He studied the form of the birds and the way that their feathers track and began to express in art what his eye appreciated in nature. His bird figures now are accurate and true to life in size, form, color, wing pattern and even down to the color of the eye.

His skill in representing these beautiful avian creatures has been showcased in his illustration work found in “Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas,” a comprehensive, 600-page hardcover book. Jack Seilheimer, a biology professor at CSU-Pueblo, told The Chieftain in March, 2004, “I also consider him more than just a birder. He’s really a distinguished field ornithologist, in the best sense of the word. He truly is both scientist and artist.”

Radeaux explains his work, “The life-sized images of birds . . . are not merely idealized illustrations but explorations of the patterning and geometrics found in nature . . . It is a style unique to me — a combination of detail and restraint, repetition and rhythm.”

Radeaux explains that his work has always been about nature and patterning, so quilts seem an obvious extension. Ten years ago, Radeaux’s wife received a quilt pin as a gift. That pin captivated Radeaux and led him to 19th century patchwork patterns that incorporated stylized bird designs. He scours quilt books and talks with traditional quilters to identify different bird patterns in the quilts, which are now incorporated into his newest series — Patchwork Bird. He marries these quilt patterns with the life-like illustrations Radeaux is known for. The balance, form and composition of these works are unparalleled.

Patchwork Bird will be on exhibit at the Arts Center during our holiday exhibitions from November 15, 2008 through January 31, 2009.

Radeaux is currently the co-owner of the John Deaux Galleries on Union Avenue.

Please contact Maggie Divelbiss at 295-7209 or Dawn DiPrince at 295-7217 for more information.

About the Creative CircleThe Creat ive Circ le is a par tnership between the Arts Center and individuals who name the Arts Center in their estate plans.

When you join the Creative Circle, you are a part of our future posterity. You are making a statement that the educational work we do at the Arts Center is valuable and that you want to be a part of this work living on.

If you have already put the Arts Center in your will or estate plans or plan to, let us know. We would love to have you join this amazing group of visionary people. Membership is completely voluntary and carries no obligation to you. We simply wish to recognize your important gift to us during your lifetime.

It is said that everyone leaves footprints on the sands of time. Our prints are made by the impact of our lives on others. A person is remembered for the weight of character, marks of accomplishment, shapes of kindness, length of compassion, depth of personal warmth, generosity and values.

By leaving positive impressions behind, we enhance the lives of our friends and loved ones. We give them footprints to follow. Thoughtful estate planning is an important way to make a print in the sand. It helps others to remember and recognize our priorities.

an estate gift makes a positive statement. If you include the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center in the final disposition of your estate of any amount, you declare to your family and friends that you believe in and care about the mission of the Arts Center. Your parting gift becomes a clear declaration of your values.

an estate gift provides needed funding. Estate gifts are especially valuable because they often come at critical times. They provide that extra boost to the budget that can make the difference between program advancement and program retrenchment.

Estate gifts can be designated for a specific purpose or they can be unrestricted for use where needed most. They can fund endowments that perpetually provide an ongoing witness to your friends and loved ones that you believe in the work of the Arts Center.

an estate gift encourages imitation. There’s something about a well-planned estate gift that influences others. As friends and family members plan their own estates, they may recall your generosity and thoughtfulness.
