The Picasso, Matisse, Chagall exhibition of fine art prints creates a great opportunity for the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center and the Pueblo community. Such exceptional works serve to inspire everyone. This extraordinary private collection came to my attention when I was working in a museum in the Midwest. The collector began with a passion for Pablo Picasso and that artist’s all-encompassing creative abilities. Over time the collector learned more about Picasso’s relation to and respect for other early 20th century cutting edge artists like Henri Matisse and Marc Chagall. I am pleased that the collector has agreed to share this collection with our Front Range and southern Colorado audience. It is a rare treat since this is only the second time these works have been seen together in public.

The exhibition has been made possible by a wide range of sponsors and supporters. I want to convey my heartfelt thanks to all who stepped up with encouragement and

financial backing. Please join me at the special members-only opening reception September 19 and introduce yourselves because I’d like to thank each of you for your commitment to membership.

This is truly a time of exciting changes for the Arts Center. As you may know, our facility is undergoing a change in management. While Pueblo County’s assistance and cooperation continues with the HVAC system, Buell Children’s Museum and White Buildings, we are happy to be able to hand pick new partners in keeping our grounds beautiful. To help with this transition, we have secured $200,000 for upkeep through the end of this year. I believe it is important to also take proactive measures to help save public funds. For example, a recent lighting study will turn what is normally a $100,000 expense to just $31,000 through a Black Hills Energy program. This cost will be undertaken by the county, who still owns the buildings. We will see a return on this investment in just 14 months, and save thousands of dollars annually in future years!

September will be the launch of an increase in admission rates – the first in 15 years. The Sangre de Cristo Arts Center has always made an effort to keep offerings accessible to everyone in our community, and rates have been significantly lower than comparable venues within the state. We continue to stay below the state and national average, but we value the offerings within the Arts Center’s walls and must keep up with operating costs.

I’m pleased to announce the Charles and Jeanette Gilchrist White Collection of contemporary southwest art is scheduled to arrive in June 2015. This collection demonstrates how artists from New Mexico are bringing their cultural heritage to mainstream art. It reveals a common thread we all have in the power of nature’s inspiration, especially here in Pueblo, the northern gateway to the Southwest.

Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Marc Chagall were among the

trailblazers of their time, an era defined by artistic leaps in

freedom from academia constraints. This private collection

reinforces the sense of time that was 1920’s Paris and creates

for the eye a feast of line play and compositional delight.

Visitors to the exhibition will explore the imagery of

expansive subjects ranging from the human body to

family members and the Bible in a collection of

lithographs, etchings, linocuts, and ceramics

from these renowned artists.

Most of the works in this collection were conceived as part of a series commissioned by an influential Parisian dealer, Ambroise Vollard (1865-1939). All three artists knew each other and their works well; Picasso and Matisse in particu-lar maintained a wary friendship and constructive rivalry based on deep respect for the artistic talent and innovation of each for the other.

Christy Callaham, painter and Jungian psychotherapist from Colorado Springs, has interpreted thousands of dreams, written

bookshelves full of dream journals, and produced galleries full of paintings. Callaham paints her dreams to amplify their meaning,

believing they reveal the mythic nature of our life stories. Says Cal-laham, “Painting the dream brings what was formerly unconscious to consciousness in a concrete image, keeping the inner message alive.”

This exhibition includes 60 paintings by professional artists from across the United States. Overall, 90 artists entered over 200 paintings. Brigit O’Connor, world renowned author and instructor, is the juror for the 2014 Aquarius National Watermedia Exhibition.

Dorothy Mendoza prefers painting with watercolor and gouache (an opaque watercolor medium). She also loves working in oils, acrylics, and mixed media. Constantly experimenting with new techniques and approaches toward painting, she says, “There seem to be many artists within me. On any given day, I may begin work with a large brush in loose transparent washes, and an hour later, I will be using a smaller brush doing very linear details in my landscapes.”

STORY WALKPromotes the continuous developmental process of reading about the arts in a positive interaction with literature and people. Join us for a “Story Walk,” based on work by Anne Ferguson of Montplier, Vermont that promotes reading, family time, nature, physical activity. Adults and children walk from book page to book page that have been laminated and placed intervals apart. Read a story together for fun, literacy and exercise. We will be creating a library of books that will be placed around the community to be checked out by childcares & schools.

BRAIN BUILDERSVisit the award winning Buell Children’s Museum and build your child’s brain with the age appropriate activities. We are rewarding you and recognizing adults modeling positive behaviors for young people with a badge. The importance of cognitive, social and emotional development of young children benefits us all and impacts community economic development. STEM to STEAM ACTIVITIES Engage children in quality creative experiences using their first languages: Art, Music, Dance and Theatre. Around the Museum discover fun interactive kits that engage the youngest guests in science, technology, engineering and math learning that connects to the arts!

SCHOOL READINESSComing this Spring! Families and child care programs visiting the Buell Children’s Museum, play “school,” meet “teachers,” see a show on stage about going to kindergarten, and receive additional information about being ready for school.
