St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice in your local communities
A wonderful day was had by over 80 ladies who attended our recent Ladies lunch at HemswellCourt. As well as enjoying a fantastic shopping experience with a selection of beautiful craft andgift stalls and a delicious lunch the ladies were thoroughly entertained by guest speaker and localLincolnshire Author Margaret Dickinson. The day raised £3000 to support the continuingdelivery of local community Hospice services and our sincere thanks to everyone who attendedand supported the day in some way.A reminder that our annual `Light up a Life’ event in Gainsborough this year takes place onTuesday 6th December, 6.30pm at the United Reformed Church. These unique celebrations whichtake place across the county are a special time for families and friends to join us in rememberingthe people we love who are no longer with us. Light up a Life is free and open to everyone notjust those touched by Hospice Care and regardless of faith. After the programme in the church there will be an optional torch light walk to the `Tree of Life’in the nearby Market Place; our thanks to Gainsborough Town Council for enabling us to usetheir tree for this purpose. Warming Refreshments will also be served in the church. If you would like to make a dedication in remembrance of a loved one please get in touch withme.I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks and appreciation to everyone who hasover the year supported St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice in some way, by promoting andattending our events, donating prizes, homemade produce and plants and baking cakes. My thanks also to those who have organised their own events/fundraising `in support of’St Barnabas, made donations and have so generously given their time and resources. It is thanks to this kindness and support that St Barnabas is able to continue to deliver our care topatients and families at what is often the most difficult time in their lives and from all atSt Barnabas our sincere thanks. And finally but by no means least my heartfelt thanks to all ourvolunteers who help in so many ways at the George Henderson Lodge and also assist me atevents; I really appreciate all that you do and it is an absolute pleasure to work with you.Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and my Best Wishes for 2017 .Caroline Swindin Community Events Fundraiser, Mobile: 07435 970309,email: [email protected]

Due to illness and age related issues resulting in lack of numbers, the closure of the Parkinson’sGainsborough and District Support Group was decided from Parkinson’s UK. This was a smallvulnerable yet valuable group. Instead of supporting it with help and assistance and becausethere was no volunteer to take on this role Parkinson’s UK closed the group retrieving funds of2.2k.The Parkinson’s exercise group has been running for 6 years. It is purely suited for the needs ofthe members and there is absolutely no other alternative to this type support in Gainsboroughwhich is critical for all aspects of their health and well being. Now that the Parkinson’sGainsborough and District has closed this also a crucial need to maintain sustainability. We need help with growth and funding for strength and development raising profile and
awareness of this debilitating disease that progress unlike any other diseases. It also needsco-ordinating with Doctors Surgeries and John Coupland Hospital to signpost and guideParkinson’s Sufferers. The other aspect of need is for some bespoke one 2 one’s in their ownhomes to gain confidence and ability to rebuild a life coping with Parkinson’s mentallyand physically. This has proven very successful in the past but again, funding has been cut from the 'VitalityExercise at Home Service' referred by various collaborating groups which are no longeravailable. (Public Health Funded) It will also give an opening for the local doctors to signpostin both areas of needdepending on the patients requirements and potentially be a valuable stepping stoneto the destiny of our town’s health and well being. There is a lack of facilities for the mature or less able person generally in this area, however aSupport Group in Gainsborough for Parkinson's is essential to both carer and sufferer. The older person can be very vulnerable and isolated on a daily basis, the less they do the less
they want to do. A loss of a partner can isolate them even more making them a little moreanxious and feeling low. With the additional ageing of the body along with chronic ailments, diseases and joint replacements the need for social interaction and general care is paramount.Unlike Dementia individuals that suffer from Parkinson’s take a low profile and hidesymptoms in shame or embarrassment from the community. This creates a very dark place.A friendly class with support is a warm welcome to everyone; therefore it is very important todevelop a support group separately to an exercise class to engage all age groups and abilitiesand to reduce the stigma of this debilitating disease.Liz Clews is taking this voluntary role to help restore the group and maintain continuity; itneeds regular source of funding to develop the ‘Support Group’ There is no other specificexercise class either local or otherwise The exerciseregime is specific to Parkinson’s and other neurological needs. Both groups are very much inneed within Gainsborough.Recently Julie Stubbs from Beckingham who is an occupational therapist also volunteers toassist the members. If anyone else would like to help in any other way like fund raising or marketing, please do nothesitate to contact Liz.The £613 will go towards 3 people receiving 3 private one to one sessions in their own home,This will help build confidence to attend the weekly exercise session held at Morton VillageHall 11am every Tuesday by Liz Clews. For more details ring Liz 01427 615608The rest will go towards running the exercise sessions.
