800 DAYS RIFBy Steven Thomson

Kenya Village Manager

On Tuesday the 23rd September it was time for Kenya to celebrate with QGC on reaching a RIF milestone. The staff at Kenya have now passed 2 years Recordable Incident Free and to reward the staff Morris and QGC have got together for a lunch.

All the staff have worked hard to improve safety in the project and all the hard work is now starting to show. With the support of the QGC Camp Co-ordinator, Tina McMah, and the team (family) at Kenya we have passed the 2 years, reaching 800 RIF days.

All staff past and present have contributed to get this site where it is now. As a Manager it makes my work easier know-ing that all the staff are looking after each other on a day to day basis. A big thank you to all the staff at Kenya and looking forward to celebrating more achievements in the future.

The XC Minesite Department had a special guest for the Nightshift Pre-start recently. Now I’m not saying that BATMAN and Justin Tupper (FMG XC Village Supervisor) are the same person …BUT I’ve never seen them in the one place at the same time.Jess WatermanMine Site Cleaning Manager - Christmas Creek

Morris is committed to assisting the communities in which we operate, for the second year running Morris has been a Platinum Sponsor of the Moranbah East State School P&C Garden Party. The fundraiser is in its 12th year, from humble beginnings of 40 ladies on the front lawn of the Moranbah East State School, the event has grown to be the ladies’ event on Moranbah’s Social Calendar.

One of the organisers, Karlie Cummins, said “The Garden Party goes Gatsby was the theme of the event, over 450 ladies dressed in their finest - most came inspired by the 1920s and partied the afternoon away. The Garden Party always promises glitz, glam, surprises and great prizes and this year certainly didn’t disappoint! Local lady, Jessica Faulkner, played on guitar and sang while guests were seated by their waitresses and served their first grazing platter from the talented crew at Morris Corp.

Final figures have not come in yet but it is looking like the amount raised will be close to the $60,000 mark - which will make Moranbah East State School one of the highest fund-raising P&Cs in the state.

This event could not ever be so successful without the generous support of our sponsors. Special mention must go to Morris Corp, Moranbah Community Workers’ Club and CFMEU for their ongoing Platinum sponsorships. These businesses are the backbone of our event and help in so many ways. The food this year was spectacular and the whole catering side of the event ran so smoothly thanks to Morris Corp.”

SiteLife StoriesThank you to all the sites that are enthusiastically running SiteLife events each month, Collinsville got in the spirit of Talk Like a Pirate Day by decorating the dining hall and office. The Pre Start had pirate talk and dinner had pirate themed dishes.

Yandi impressed with their SS YANDI display as part of the seafood theme night. The boat was built from left over wood by Morris Maintenance Team.

One morning at a toolbox, Cliff a HSEQ Advisor of Christmas Creek pledged to colour his beard blue and shave his hair into a mohawk if he could reach a goal of $500 raised for Blue September. We are happy to report not only did Cliff reach the initial goal of $500 but has exceeded $1,500 raised. Below is photo evidence of Cliff’s new cut and colour. Congratulations to all involved in helping raise money for this important men’s health charity.

MORRIS 2014 NATIONALLEADERS’ CONFERENCEBy Darren AndrewNational Organisational Development Advisor

Living the Vision 2014The 2014 annual Morris National Leaders’ Conference took place at the Rydges Resort Fremantle, 17-19th September. This successful national event featured guest speakers and over 70 participants from both the east and west.Under the overall theme of “Living the Vision” 2014 Conference sought to explore -• The refreshed Morris Vision and Values focussing on the Morris strategic plan and operational effectiveness, and• Service delivery focussing on Quality, Consistency and standardisation.

Conference HighlightsDAY ONEAfter an emotional welcome to country by Aunty Gail we had an introductory welcome by Fiona Berkin (CEO), Fiona opened the conference in her affable style to a cheering round of applause, we were off to a good start. Peter Filshie (ESB OPS) had the crowd on a string with his entertaining and heart-warming stories about the values in action at a site level, well-done Peter.

Next up we had David Staughton (key note speaker) regaling us with tales of service delivery, quality, consistency and standardisation. The Morris vision and values featured strongly throughout the keynote sprinkled with some wise words around making a dollar and a difference and supporting team engagement. David is a unique character and a beacon of positivity…so far so good!

A new concept for the conference was the “immersion rooms”. This required all Morris departments to take responsibility and accountability for their own content. The general idea is that the conference delegates rotate amongst the rooms engaging with the content and immersion room hosts. We have some talented and creative people at Morris, the results from the immersion rooms were fantastic - a huge success and worthy of the perceived risk.

Steve Fewster (FMG) was another guest speaker who spoke about Morris from the customer perspective. We were fortunate in getting Steve to attend and his topics of conversation were highly relevant and will serve us well moving into the future.

Fun Time – we transited over to the Little Creatures Brewery for a fun evening of trivia and conversation, the title for the most trivial team belongs to the west…perhaps that should read the title for the team that knows the most trivia went to the west. All jokes aside a comprehensive win, after one of the trivia hosts admitted they couldn’t add up-resulting in a protest. Congratulations to the WA teamCont. next page.

MORRIS 2014 NATIONALLEADERS’ CONFERENCE

Living the Vision 2014DAY TWOUp early for a hearty breakfast, nice to be cooked by some-one else. Friday was the day that I was looking forward to the most. We had engaged a team of professional actors to deliver a simulated court case involving Morris staff and a core area of our business - food safety. The court case was based on case law and required the delegates to understand and adopt a “worst case scenario” mentality. The roles of prosecution, defence, magistrate, village manager, utility worker, mine site employee and effected partner were all played by members of the Black Swan Theatre Company and many being recognised from various TV shows.

There were not many dry eyes left in the house as the victim impact statement was read by the effected partner, highlighting how a simple “food poisoning” case could escalate into Salmonella Encephalopathy and the subsequent results on the individual and the family.

The real learning for me was when the conference delegates were asked to take on the role of the jury and decide who was responsible. An interesting and eye opening discussion. Our own food handling policies and procedures were dissected and the refreshed Morris values looked at one by one. The key learnings from the groups were :

1. Identifying potential risks including gaps in systems and process

2. Reflecting on any Morris cultural vulnerabilities

3. Highlighting areas for continuous improvement, and

4. Showcasing the practical interpretation of the law and how that can affect Morris team members.

After a quick break for lunch we were back into it again with the ESB’s very own Dan Anderson letting us in on a few thoughts of his own around the stories of values in action - great job Dan, followed by the last of the immersion rooms. This brings us to the GALA dinner, an eagerly anticipated event with everyone, well almost everyone frocking up in their best livery. I am sure Lea will give us an update on how the night went.

On the plane back to Brisbane I found myself reflecting on what a great conference it was and what a small team of dedicated Morris people can achieve. A huge thank you to all involved and please look out for the post conference talk book available soon on the Morris learning centre.

WE ARE A FINALIST!!Morris Corporation has been shortlisted as a finalist in the NSCA/GIO National Safety Awards of Excellence in the category of ‘Best Communication of a Safety Message’. Our nomination surrounded the National Safety Video Competition that was run over the Christmas New Year period 2013/2014. All Morris employees were eligible to enter by developing a 30 second video reminding people to ‘Keep Safe Over The Holidays’. Our nomination was based around the entire campaign including the engagement concept, all of the safety videos that were developed and ultimately, the communication of a safety message. Eighteen teams of five submitted a safety video that was posted to the Morris Face-book page. This campaign remains our most popular, outdoing other posts by 1200%. The awards gala luncheon will be held on Wednesday 15th October 2014, at Jones Bay Wharf, Sydney.
