Kenya and Windibri recently participated in a team building exercise at a Toolbox. The purpose was to build the tallest structure using only straws and tape. Craig Hamilton, Windibri Village Manager said that “It was a lot of fun and we had a lot of laughs.”

GOLDEN GROVE DOWN BUT NOT OUT

This month’s “Grumblings from the Grove” comes from a different angle from most of the other sites this month. Normally the Morris Times is a celebration of triumph, achievement and a positive spin on site life – that much remains the same. This month, after a great run of over two years and three months of no recordable injuries, Golden Grove’s run of 844 days has sadly came to an end with a manual handling injury.

Where we differ this month, Golden Grove pays respect towards also celebrating our failures because the past always has a way of returning. Those who don’t learn, or can’t remember it, are doomed to repeat it.

Looking back, a lot has happened on the journey that started way back on the 01 December 2012 and finished on 24 February 2015. More importantly are the lessons that we learnt during that time that has made our site safer for the future. To say site is a safer place to work is an understatement and one of many pleasing testaments that allows our families to sleep easy knowing that at the end of the swing, we’ll be coming home, smiling and tired but importantly, safe.

During our 844 days, we’ve changed for the better and no longer are open drains left unattended in kitchens, Chef’s hands una-dorned without cut-gloves or appliances used without certification. Now, our smoke detectors work without disturbance, safety steps are used as the only means to get high and we can expect to be told to belt up on the bus, even when we board in silence. Manual handling, hmmm, oh dear, I really thought all of us had that sorted....

Like a great cricket score, our run of 844 has finished but to you all, we say “not out!” To us, it’s more like “howzat” as GG is only warming up to the next record innings. We’ve re-kicked off our season, it’s a slow and steady build up but this much is certain - see you in 2017 when we pass 845….
