The Kangi Bottle PickeruppererKangi Village, WAThe Kangi Maintenance team have been creative once again. Andrew, our electrician, used his imagination and decided to create what we have named the “Bottletop Pickerupperer”. Andrew created this tool out of old bits of PVC tubing he found around the village, old magnets he had lying around and an old piece of rope. It is created in such a way that you wave the ‘Bottletop Pickerupperer’ over anything that is metal. Metal objects will stick to the base of the tool. Then, by holding the tool over the bin and pulling on the rope (which raises the magnets from the base of the tool) releases the metal rubbish. This was presented to the Tavern Staff who were grateful for the Bottletop Pickerupperer as now they don’t have to get on their hands and knees to pick up bottle tops.

New Gym SignageActiV8We’ve just launched some new ActiV8 signage to help motivate our customers whilst living and working in the remote villages Morris sustains. It isn’t always easy to remain motivated and the new and improved gym signage is just one of the ways we hope to reinforce healthy messages. We also asked our Morris Facebook fans how they try and stay healthy whilst working away from home. Here are just a few of their ideas:• “Say ‘no’ to that second plate of amazing food.”• “Don’t eat dessert every night and do some regular exercise.”• “Have a group of friends to go to the gym with and make the gym a fun active place to be, and also portion

control.”• “In the morning, stretch really well for at least 10/15 minutes, eat right, so veggies and fruits, throw a steak in there

at dinner or some chicken, try drink at least 5ltr of water daily, gym is great if on site. If not do sit ups, push ups, a jog or walk around site, don’t go outside the boundaries or bush walking, regular exercise helps so keep up a healthydietandfitnessplan, rememberyouareinahotplacesowateriskey.Stayawayfromchocolatesandmilky type drinks. Water Water Water, Gatorade and Powerade are made for athletes and people who do gym workouts for lengthy periods. It is not a general juice drink just because you’re thirsty.”

• “Do the gym before or after work until, you get used to the shift hours.”• “Suffer the pain of discipline or suffer the pain of regret” Gym, move, make use of what you’ve got while you’ve got

it. Make sure at least half the plate is veggies, and ditch the pants with stretchy waistbands at mealtimes. Drink PLENTY of water.”

• “Not all camp sites have gyms, just remember to eat what you need don’t over do it and try walking/jogging around camp, andkeepupthefluids(thisdoesnotmeanalcohol).”

Meet Steve BoveyBusiness Development Manager (ESB)

Where have you worked prior to Morris? I’m currently on long service leave from the Australian Army. I joined the Army straight from high school in 1985 as a 17 year old as a Private soldier, and I will be discharged in July this year. I was allocated to the Australian Army Catering Corps and worked my way up to Major commanding the only Catering Company in the Army, based in Enoggera. We were feeding about 4500 soldiers and officers in both the Gallipoli Barracks in Enoggera QLD and in the field. In 2011 we deployed a section to help with the QLD floods and in 2012 we also fed the Mentoring Task Force in Afghanistan, which totalled about 900 soldiers over six different patrol bases for the first six months of the year. So far from what you have learnt and seen what do you enjoy most about working for Morris? Working in Morris is a very positive experience. Everyone wants to help you. There is always a smile, even if you see that the time or task isn’t the most enjoyable. The people in Morris, especially at the sites, work as hard as anyone I have seen. I sometimes wish my soldiers could experience the shifts you guys do. It would certainly stop a lot of the bitching when they go back to the ones they are on now, I can tell you. What has been your career highlight to date? It’s pretty hard to beat joining a company on a Tuesday and then going on a trip to Hobart for three days, expenses paid, the next Thursday. It really set me up for success as I met the majority of the VMs at the conference, and getting to know them has helped me as I have travelled around the sites. Can you share any tips or challenges you’ve faced on your journey? I started my time as a chef in the Army, and it was always driven into me (sometimes physically till I learnt) that nothing beats having your Mise en Place (preparation) complete, ready for use. Finish this sentence, “My worst habit is ... pretending to listen when my wife is talking to me. She says ‘that I never listen’, or something like that.

What do you like to do in your spare time? I am a fishing tragic. I spent a lot of time in the Northern Territory and as a result became

obsessed with fishing, to the stage where my wife Debbie called herself a fishing widow. I am now working to learn the different techniques that southern style fishing demands, but expect to be back out there on the water most weekends. What’s the best advice you have received? I once had a Boss who was very strict on being able to spell, especially with the role-specific menu items. He hated people who strived for mediocrity and part of his ethos was to link good spelling with professionalism. He always said that the small things, the attention to minor detail, were what showed a professional person. He believed the diner wasn’t dumb, and would wonder about our ability to cook dishes such as broccoli, if we couldn’t even spell it. Of course he was a little more direct with his words than that, but I don’t think they could be published verbatim. Finish this sentence, “I can’t live without .... my chef’s knife. I’ve had it almost thirty years and still use it almost every day. Name 5 people either dead or alive you would invite to dinner and why? Jamie Oliver, his energy and excitement about food and cooking is extremely infectious. Peter Cosgrove, he is a down to earth type of fella that made it pretty big. Peter Cundell, a fantastic bloke who is a gardening celebrity but also a very well decorated soldier who fought as an Australian Soldier, after transferring from the British Army, during Korea. Rex Hunt, whilst he is a personality best experienced in small doses, there’s not a lot about fishing he doesn’t know. Ted Egan, a long time Territorian, who has the most interesting stories to tell about his time in the communities of the Territory, I just wouldn’t ask him to sing or play the beer-a-phone. If a movie was made about your life - what would it be called & who would play you? There’s already a movie out, Steven Seagal played me! Ha Ha.I’m afraid a movie about me would be pretty boring. It’s not really exciting work in a commercial kitchen, it’s hard and satisfying work but not exactly Gordon Ramsay high end restaurant stuff.

The winner of the HSEQ Monthly Award for May is Hayleigh Baker. Hayleigh has gone beyond the call of duty to ensure that the environment is maintained. Hayleigh has been seen picking up rubbish on paths on her way back from lunch, and cleaning up rubbish around the accommodation while not on duty. Going beyond what is required in her role to ‘fix a problem’ is an admirable attitude and one that should be celebrated and encouraged amongst all staff across the organisation.
