HALLELUJAH!By Eddie Paku (Pictured left)Village Manager, Golden Grove, WA.

“In recognition of our 365 days recordable incident free, please join your hands and praise be with Father Ed (Aka Eddi - Village Manager Golden Grove). Amen! In the days of old God looked upon the earth and he saw man. Man was busy building, inventing and working. As man was working, safety was not on his mind. Man was thinking, “she’ll be right”. This “she’ll be right” attitude was swiftly followed by “ouch” with missing fingers, sore backs and loss of hearing. A loss of hearing meant they could no longer hear their wives – whilst

some thought this was a good thing, others thought otherwise. Things had to change, things had to be made safer and with that, man made improvements and recorded his achievements. No longer did he have to put up with small sticks of pinewood impregnated with sulphur and its nauseous fumes, in 1890, man invented the match box and striker and smokers were happy until 2006 when they were made to go outside. In the day it was bright but at night it was dark. Then in 1878, Thomas Edison in his wisdom put an end to the gas powered light and patented the Electric light bulb and children at night were happy. The rail workers in Scotland were scared, the fear was in their eyes. Then in 1964, high-vis was first trialled and then adopted as a requirement of the network rail

CHRISTMAS @ KARNTAMA VILLAGE (KV)By Tui MoehuKarntama Village, WAA fantastic effort was put together by the Catering Department here at KV. Additional hours worked by all to pull off the best on-site Christmas I have seen in my time. Decorations included a more appropriate take on a ginger bread house with our chef’s creating a ginger bread village with miniature dongas. Well done KV team!

CRICKET COMP WINNER!Higginsville Village, WAWinner of the Brownes Beach Cricket Set for Higginsville was Daniel Jolly (Pictured right). The competition was very well received on site with several big kids disappointed they didn’t win.

in1970. Wives at home were glad for they knew their men would be seen and be safe.Man moved from the horse to the car. The Saab GT750 was the first vehicle to introduce seat belts as a standard feature in 1958. So man and woman was happy. After 1957 when the contraceptive pill was introduced, they were happier still. Safe sex meant no babies, which gave a choice that most were happy with. Then, God looked upon Australia and blessed it with minerals and hardworking kiwis to come over and work the soil. The miners came, chasing the dream. It was then, workplace health and safety came to be. Like all the inventions that came before to make life safer for man - the light bulb, the seat belt, the safety match and pill - the miners embraced the safer way of life Morris came to feed the miners, house their weary bodies and transport them to their place of work. Morris men and woman all knew that deep in their hearts they had to work safer but in the beginning, there were some who walked in the dark.

Then a new light began to shine. From the darkness came a new safety focus and a new safety culture began to emerge. Take fives were been done, safety obs and hazards reported. Cut gloves sprang forth on the hands of the gifted and knives fell only upon the flesh of food and not of man. Drivers and spotters worked together as a team, backs were straight and knees were bent as doonas were laid and safety descended like rain on a dessert. This made everyone happy. For it had been 365 days this December since the last recordable incident. God smiled, for he knew that the Morris people were now safe. They could return back to their homes and spread happiness, even if they still pretended not to hear their wives.” Kind regardsEddie Paku

SAFETY VIDEO COMPETITIONA huge success! In December 2013, Morris launched a safety video competition. Our sites were asked to form groups of five and develop a 30 second video with a message reminding people to “STAY SAFE OVER THE HOLIDAYS.”

The winning prize was an Acer tablet and there were two ways to win. The first, was to gain the most ‘likes’ on Facebook between 24 Dec and the 9 Jan . The second winning video was decided by the HSE team where each of the videos was scored against various criteria.

22 videos were submitted, all with their own unique message reminding people to be safe over the holidays. In total, the Morris safety videos were viewed nearly 2000 times during the campaign. Congratulations goes to the winning teams from Windibri Village and Yandi Sustaining Project and also to ALL of the sites who submitted a video and/or supported the campaign by ‘liking’ their favourite video.

All of the videos can be viewed on the Morris Facebook page. www.facebook.com/morriscorp
