MORRIS Retail OfferBy Daniel ZarewMy first couple of months within Morris has been very rewarding and it has been great getting around to some of the sites seeing first hand the current retail offer and gaining a better understanding of what our opportunities are. I’ve been very impressed by the passion and enthusiasm of those I’ve met and it is great to see such a high level of regard for our clients and customer satisfaction by everyone on site.

Whilst there are a number of challenges and opportunities within our business, the key focus items that I’m working on overcoming currently is the ability for us to manage an accurate centralised database to avoid the inconsistencies amongst sites as well as securing a national wholesale agreement to ensure sites can order from a larger range whilst potentially buying everyday convenience items at significantly lower prices than what is available at present. We are making good progress on both fronts and I hope to have these finalised before the end of September all going well. Aside from these two key items I’ve been working on a number of other areas to help improve our retail offer and make life a little easier at the villages for your customers. Some of these initiatives are;

• Donuts to compliment site barista coffee offers. These have just been received by sites in the Chichester and Solomon hubs with Kangi selling out of its initial free allocation of 244 units in the first few days!

• Pacific Optics general merchandise. As previously communicated to sites there is now a range of thongs as well as general merchandise lines like earphones for listening to music and wall chargers for iPhones/Smart phones for those customers that have found they have forgotten to bring them to site.

• Trial of San Pellegrino drinks at selected sites. • Retail site floor plans. As I visit sites I have begun building a database of existing floor plans,

which I’m currently working on to develop new updated proposed floor plans including merchandise layouts for implementation in the future.

I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible over the next few months as I make my way to more sites and would encourage anyone who would like to contribute to improving our retail offer, both in the bar and shop, to contact me ([email protected]). Your opinions are greatly valued and many a good idea that has gone on to be implemented across a business has come from those with the most relevant industry experience, living and breathing it on a daily basis.

BUFFELPARK VILLAGE

FILIPINOTHEME NIGHT!

FAREWELL MUNGUNGAL VILLAGEBy Craig Hamilton (Assistant Village Manager)We are winding down and it looks as if we will be demobing shortly. This has certainly been a challenging project; but after 9 months it will be sad to see it go.There has been a lot of good friendships made and many happy times. We have been through many trying times and have seen several staff come and go throughout the life of this camp. But now we are coming to an end I feel privileged to have worked with a diverse range of characters in such a beautiful location and will sorely miss their company. I wish them all good luck where every they may go.

KANGI MAINTENANCE UPDATEBy Travis Hicks (Maintenance Manager, Kangi Village)The maintenance team has been working hard to beautifying the village at the moment we are focusing on the tavern. The guys have also made a portable bar for FMG to use at their V.I.P functions which has been very well received. The front of the bar has been painted blue (Fortescue Blue) and we have corrugated iron with a timber frame around it to give it that rustic look. We now building a standing inbetween the pool tables to break up the large space and stop people walking through the area. We have also added some wind breaks that the guys have added down at the oval BBQ to stop the cold breeze blowing through at night when the residents are enjoying the BBQ.

CHINCHILLA ROTARY BALLBy Simon Hoverman (Area Manager, Surat Basin)The Morris team in Chinchilla along with Chinchilla High School hospitality students supplied a buffet dinner for the Rotary Ball. Through the help of our suppliers, we were able to donate the gourmet buffet for 120 people and as such were the Major Sponsor.

The funds raised are going to the relocation of the Chinchilla Kindergarten out of the flood zone and into a brand new building. We also had assistance from the Chinchilla State High School hospitality students. The feedback from their teacher was that this was an experience that was priceless.

WHERE SAYINGS COME FROMBy Steve Bovey (Buisness Development Manager, ESB)

PIE / EASY AS PIE / NICE AS PIE Easy or very appealing According to Cassell’s Slang Dictonary the origins of modern usage of the ‘easy as pie’ or ‘nice as pie’ expressions are late 1800s American, but logic suggests earlier derivations are from the New Zealand Maori people, in whose language ‘pai’ means good. Variations still found in NZ and Australia from the early 1900s include ‘half-pie’ (mediocre or second rate) and ‘pie’ meaning good or expert at something.

THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING You only know how good the pudding is when you actually eat it. The origin of the expression ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’ is four hundred years old: it is the work of Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) from his book Don Quixote de la Mancha (1605-1615). Modern usage commonly shortens and slightly alters the expression to ‘the proof is in the pudding’. This is a wonderful example of the power and efficiency of metaphors - so few words used and yet so much meaning conveyed.

SANDWICH The snackMost will know that the sandwich is named after the Earl of Sandwich, 17th century, who ordered a piece of meat between two slices of bread so as not to have to interrupt another marathon card-playing session; the practice of eating in this way was not invented by Sandwich though, it dates back to Roman times.

WORTH HIS SALT A valued member of the teamSalt has long been associated with a man’s worth, since it used to be a far more valuable commodity than now (the Austrian city of Salzburg grew almost entirely from the wealth of its salt mines). The expression originates as far back as Roman times when soldiers’ pay was given in provisions, including salt. The modern day version probably grew from the one Brewer references in 1870, ‘true to his salt’, meaning ‘faithful to his employer’.
