Pete Nitzsche, County Agricultural Agent

Lesley Parness, Superintendent, Horticultural Education,
Morris County Park Commission
Keynote Address
Dr. Joan Dye Gussow
Dr. Gussow, dubbed by the New York Times as the
“matriarch of the local food movement”, is a serious food
producer, writer, and Professor Emerita at Columbia
University, where she was the former chair of the Nutrition
Education Program, and where she still teaches her course
on nutritional ecology every fall.
She is the author of several books including: The Feeding
Web; The Nutrition Debate; Chicken Little, Tomato Sauce and
Agriculture; This Organic Life: Confessions of a Suburban
Homesteader; and Growing Older . A long time organic mini-
farmer, Gussow now lives writes, and grows all her own
organic produce on the west bank of the Hudson River.
Breakout Sessions Growing Small Fruits
Learn how to choose, plant and maintain a variety of small
fruits suitable for a community garden. Speaker Pete
Nitzsche is County Agricultural Agent with Rutgers
Cooperative Extension of Morris County. Pete is a frequent
lecturer on growing small fruits and vegetables in the home
garden at Master Gardener classes, and at the Rutgers
Home Gardeners School.
Beekeeping at Community Gardens
Jan Zientek, Essex County Extension Department Head and
Director of Rutgers Urban Gardening Program, shares his
beekeeping experience at community gardens. Jan has
been keeping bees for many years, manages over 30
colonies and has helped many community gardens across
the state set up and establish hives. He’ll talk about bee
biology, colony management and how to keep them at
community gardens.
Common Insect Pests in the Vegetable Garden
Sabrina Tirpak could talk about insects all day! She is the
Principle Lab Technician at Rutgers Plant Diagnostic Lab and
the person to whom you send your insect and disease
samples to for identification. Learn about the most
common vegetable insects and, most importantly, how to
identify and control them organically.
Best Management Practices for Community Gardens
Luke Drake has been interviewing community gardeners all
across NJ for almost 2 years as part of his doctoral research.
Needless to say, he has learned a lot about what makes a
community garden successful. Learn what has worked for
others, what hasn’t, and what other community gardens are
doing to resolve some of the common issues we all face.
This session is intended for garden managers and/or
coordinators.
Seed Saving Techniques
Dr. Larry Robertson of the Plant Genetics Resource Unit in
Geneva NY is giving us a lesson on seed production and
regeneration. He’ll talk about plant reproduction and
genetics and demonstrate seed harvesting, cleaning and
drying. He’ll also cover seed storage and germination
testing. Dr. Robertson’s credentials are jaw dropping and is
presenting at the conference as part of the Northern
Organic Vegetable Improvement Collaborative outreach
program.
Finding Funding - A Development Primer
Lesley Parness, Superintendent of Horticultural Education
for the Morris County Park Commission, leads a discussion
of fund raising strategies including grants, sponsorships and
donations. Lesley has been involved in development at
botanic gardens for the past 25 years. Whether you are from
a loosely organized group, a 510 (c) 3 or a government
agency, there are steps you should take to prepare for fund
raising for your garden. This talk is designed for beginners
and will include many resources.
