The Adelaide Festival Centre means many things to our many different patrons, but over the recent years it has meant greater diversity of attractions to an ever widening audience base, as it should, in a truly multi- cultural community such as ours. The many-faceted Adelaide Festival Centre 2015 program, and the selection we present you for Morning Melodies, is no exception.

With highlights from our Adelaide Cabaret Festival, curated by the finest cabaret artist this country has produced, Barry Humphries, and our children’s festival, Come Out to summer events, Thriller Live, The Illusionists 1903 and Christmas Proms, we have it all.

We also offer collaborations with State Theatre Company of South Australia and the Adelaide Festival, and an ANZAC centenary celebration of a monumental dance piece, Rotunda with the New Zealand Dance Company and a full Brass Band.

We look forward to seeing you here to Discover, Reflect and Dream with us at the best theatre, dance and music we can bring you in 2015.

Don’t forget to also come in and explore our many exhibitions too, before and after a show all year. We have a brand new exhibition, The Maj 100 at 62 Grote Street, right next to Her Majesty’s Theatre, celebrating the 100 year rich history of our magnificent theatre.

We look forward to seeing you and your friends and family in 2015.

OUR COVER STORY

There’s a feeling you get when you look at our cover image of a young boy suspended in space and time. It conjures up feelings of freedom, adventure, discovery. Little wonder this emotive photo was the winner of the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Instagram Photo Competition.

Entrants were asked to capture the spirit of the theme, ‘discover, reflect & dream’. For Jarrett Pinksterboer, 42, that meant photographing his energetic son Maqenzee literally bouncing off the walls with excitement at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

“My parents used to take me there as a kid 30 years ago and we wanted to do the same with our kids.

“We love being a part of what the Adelaide Festival Centre does. It’s such a great place and people need to get out there and realise there’s more to life than television and computer screens.”

This is the untold story of Aboriginal soldiers in World War I. Shunned in their own country, they stepped up to defend the nation in its greatest time of need. They fought and died for the British Commonwealth, sharing horror, survival and camaraderie with mates in the trenches who ordinarily couldn’t buy them a beer. An all-male, all-Indigenous cast evokes these fearless and heroic men, largely unknown to history, who helped win the war but lost their battle on return.

Rotunda brings to life the world of the band rotunda, an iconic symbol of early 20th century community, where we rekindle memories of loss and love in a haunting snapshot of Australasian history.

416,809 Australians enlisted for service in The Great War, representing 38.7% of the total male population. The Australian casualty rate was the highest of the conflict.

Rotunda draws from the extraordinary courage and indomitable spirit of these ANZAC men, and the women who set about running the country with aching hearts and dread that their men might not return.

Renowned for its earthiness, physicality, rhythm and expression this unmistakably New Zealand choreography integrates shadow play, mace twirling, a 20-piece South Australian marching band, and a fusion of Maori tradition with dynamic contemporary dance theatre.

Every summer for sixteen years, cane cutters Barney and Roo have come back from Queensland to suburban Melbourne to share their holidays with barmaids Nancy and Olive. This year though, the cycle is broken. Nancy has married and Olive has lined up Pearl to take her place. Each one of the four must face questions about the kind of life they really want and whether, perhaps, there is something new and vital to be found by the breaking of old patterns.

For the first time in almost twenty years Ray Lawler’s iconic Australian drama will grace the Dunstan Playhouse stage. Crackling with earthy humour, the play evokes the sense of possibility and simple optimism in post-World War II Australia.

Concert pianist Anna Goldsworthy’s deeply-felt memoir, Piano Lessons, comes to glorious musical life. Goldsworthy’s award-winning book, which recounts her musical awakening as a young girl, struck a deep chord with critics, readers and music lovers on its 2009 release.

Goldsworthy herself stars in this stage adaptation which, like the book, elegantly illustrates the intriguing relationship between the young pianist and her Russian teacher. This charismatic enigma inspires and challenges her young charge in equal measure as they work through a program of sublime piano pieces, including selections from Mozart, Liszt and Chopin.

Part theatrical production and part concert, Piano Lessons provides insight into the lives and inspirations of the great masters to expose the process of learning, interpreting and creating music.

I don’t think we don’t love each other.

1977. Emma is married to Robert. But for seven years, she’s been having an affair with Jerry, Robert’s best friend.

Betrayal begins after the end of the affair, and pursues a gripping journey back to its very beginning. In a brilliant device, time is turned upside down as the play charts significant events in reverse and mines the shadowy aspects of a love affair and its fallout to devastating effect.

Enthralling and intricately layered, the play provides a ruthless exploration of the complexity of the human heart. Winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature, Harold Pinter is famous for his probing of the darker sides of human emotion. Betrayal is rightly considered to be one of his great masterpieces and showcases all of his trademark wit and yearning.

Premiering in Adelaide before transferring for seasons in Melbourne and Canberra, Betrayal will see the team behind 2013’s Helpmann Award nominated production of Hedda Gabler, including the luminous Alison Bell, reunite to create one of the highlights of the 2015 theatre calendar.

This is dance that doesn’t play it safe. From the minds of two choreographers, channelled through the exquisite dancers of Sydney Dance Company, comes two works that break new ground – throwing caution to the wind and hurling themselves into the void of the new.

A soundscape from Australia’s acclaimed Sarah Blasko and Nick Wales takes sensual, physical form in Rafael Bonachela’s Emergence, while Alexander Ekman’s irreverent Cacti expertly skewers the pretensions of contemporary dance.

Inspired and unexpected, De Novo promises a very different evening of entertainment, as it unleashes two fresh, wily dance works on an unsuspecting Australia.

This performance incudes a pre-show demonstration and a post-show Q & A.

Good morning to the day; and next my gold: Open the shrine, that I may see my saint.

Meet Volpone—wealthy con-artist, master of disguise and self-proclaimed ladies man. Armed with natural cunning and his wily sidekick Mosca, he tricks and swindles his way through the corrupt city of Venice.

From flogging snake oil to feigning his own demise, no scheme is too despicable or too outlandish in Volpone’s pursuit of trophy riches and trophy women. Ben Jonson’s Volpone is a grotesque comedy about obsessive greed and a con-trick that spins wildly out of control. This savage satire of avarice and lust ranks amongst the finest of Jacobean comedies.

First performed in 1605, Jonson’s play is as relevant today as it was then, with its scathing critique of the desire for wealth and power achieved at any moral cost.

Director Nescha Jelk (Othello, Jesikah, Random) combines with master clown Paul Blackwell and the extraordinary imaginations of designer Jonathon Oxlade (Pinocchio) and writer Emily Steel (Man in a Bag, Sepia) to create a shiny bright new world for Volpone to live in—one that might just bear a striking likeness to our own.

Adapted by Brink Productions from Patrick White’s short story Down at the Dump, featuring Zephyr Quartet.

From the mighty pen of Patrick White comes a timeless story about seizing the day. At the funeral of the scandalous Daise Morrow, as Daise herself wanders amongst the mourners, hovering between memory and rumour, over the fence two young dreamers take their first tentative steps into love.

In Brink’s richly theatrical and immersive adaptation, The Aspirations of Daise Morrow is storytelling filled with music and light; a poignant evocation of the wonders of small beginnings, the complications of compassion and the grace and majesty of love.

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the theatre this evening

Shakespeare’s greatest clowns – the rude mechanicals from A Midsummer Night’s Dream – take centre-stage in this wild reimagining of what might have happened off-stage during the Bard’s most loved comedy. Clowning, vaudeville, slapstick, farce, stand-up comedy and bad puppetry come together with both witty badinage and fart jokes to create an anarchic and thrillingly unhinged carnival that revels in its own theatricality. First directed by Geoffrey Rush in 1987, The Popular Mechanicals holds a special place in the Australian comedic canon and promises to lift the roof in the silliest ways imaginable.
