Advent Reading

God’s Promise: It Will Happenin Bethlehem



Last week we lit the second advent candle. We

were reminded of the God’s faithfulness to his

promises, and their fulfillment in Immanuel. Thisweek we light the third advent candle, and see

God’s promise that the Messiah would be born

in Bethlehem.



Micah 5:1-2

Now muster your troops, O daughter of troops;

siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the

judge of Israel on the cheek. But you, OBethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be

among the clans of Judah, from you shall come

forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel,

whose coming forth is from of old, from ancientdays.



A boy named David was born in the district of

Ephrathah in Bethlehem and grew up tending

his father Jesse’s sheep. When the time came

for Samuel to anoint a new king over Israel, Godsent him to Jesse’s house to anoint one of his

sons. The unlikely ruler would be David. He

would become the greatest king of Israel, and

Bethlehem is now known as the City of David.



Long after David’s reign, Micah foretold thatGod would again choose a king from

Bethlehem, in the land of Ephrathah. Many

years would pass before wise men from the East

followed a star in search of the newborn king ofthe Jews. After meeting with these men, King

Herod called for the scribes and chief priests

and asked them what they knew. These

religious leaders directed Herod’s attention to

Micah’s prophecy, and to Bethlehem.



God’s promise was fulfilled; as a ruler would

again come from this insignificant town andonce again God’s choice involved the most

unlikely beginning—a baby, born in a stable.





The Son of God came downand laid aside His crown

Born without great renown,

this Sovereign One

All holiness and might,

all glory shining bright

Have come to earth this night

in Mary’s son

O come, let us adore

our hope and Savior
