FRANZ LISZT. First Appearance of the Celebrated Musician in Paris. Salnt-Saens in February Century. The young men of to-day can hardly ini- njiiiio Ihe eclat, the magical prestige, with which the name of Liszt flashed upon the hoi!/.* v of the young musicians of tho early part of thfl second empire— a name so for- eign to the ears of a Frenchman, sharp and hiMIDB as the edjjn of a sword that cuts thr. ugh the air, torn by the Slavic Z as by a stroke of lightning. The artist and the man seemed to belong to fairyland. After having embodied on the piano the spirit of romanticism, Liszt, leaving behind him the glittering trail of a meteor, disap- peared for ■ lille behind Use curtain of clouds which then ' veiled' Germauy— a <ior- many different from the one of our day; a muss of little Kingdoms and indepondent duchies. bni.Ui^i ;>.i :..T->te<l castles and ii.'-"; cve ■■■„ \*. 1 '! script the look of tli*ruidiiifl<•;«>/' 'v-fvh ice of which had .disappears! ,'•■.,=•' (fNran?*.* in spite of the efforts of iho pn^Sio.... re it 3 beauty. It was known that at the court of Weimar, disdainful of his former success, he was occupied with serious composition, dreaming of a renovation of art— a purpose which excited much anxious comment, sis is always the case when a now world is to be explored or an accepted tradition broken. Moreover, the Impression.* left by Lint in Paris nave ample ground for all sorts of sur- mises. Even the truth did not always appear probable when it was t'lld about him. It was said that at a concert of the Co'.serva- tory, nfter the "Pastoral .Symphony" of Beethoven had been performed, be had dared to play the whole composition over again alone, the amazement of the audience being quickly replaced by a tremendous en- thusiasm. Acain. it was said thai another day, bored witn trio docility of the public— tired of Mains this lion, ready to tear to pieces any who displeased it, forever fawn- log at bis feet- he determined to rouse it aiid amuse himself by coming late to a con- cert at the Italiens an.; calling on some C:ie lames in their boxes, laughing and chatting, until the ]'<>:: begun to growl and roar. Worn by a Pretty Girl They Produce Trouble in a Choir. ClndßDMl Commer'ial-i.tizette. It was New Year's morning, and the fas)-.- ionable choir of the ultra-fashionable Wal- nut Hill's cliurrb wa3 rapturously greeting the opening of the year with a superb anthem that thrilled tho hearts of the con- gregation with a religious fervor so deep that the collection plate passed by nnseen. "Ah-ah-ah-ah nhmen!" swelled fit the cleiir soprano note, rising to high 15 and a qnarter. ••Treeloo trcelon tr^eloodle lood!>», frilly— willy weo-00-wee!" went theorcan, Mute stop and viola stop trilling In unison. "Ah-ah-ah-ah-abmen, ai'.-ah-a'un ah. men, ahmen!" swept out the mellow strain from the round, white throat of the con- tralto with so grand a sweetness that the brown-eyed girl in the sealskin coat turned to gaze and caught the eye of the bass solo- ist as she turned. "Trs-lee, tra-!ee, tra-lecd'e-leedle, tonra- loora-llera-loo!" went the organ, soft and low, somewhere in the depths of its har- monious bowels of melody. " Ah-ah-ali-ah-ah-ah-ahnien, ahn-.en, ah- men!" caroled iho tenor, till his brll-like notes startled the English sparrows from the eaves of the sanctuary; while the girl with the brown eves smiled and the heart of tho bass profundo played a staccato movement against hi-* ribs. be stepped forward, music in hand. Hi< turn had come. His eves were ever fixed upon the girl with the sealskin sacq Her deep eyes thrilled his very soul. The flush that came and ent afrosa her velvet cheek found responsive echoes In his pulse. With one heart-touching glance he looktil into the liquid lakes of her gentle vision and sang: "Ah-an-ah-there, an-th^re. ah-there! Ah- ah-ah-there, ah-there! Ah!" For one instant the congregation el 1 one another's breaths: then th» organ struck up with a blast like steam whistle, and some- tiling was heard to drop out of the ehoir-iof t into the vestibule with a thump like a load of coal. A Courteous Community. Kostuit Courier. Tin place railed Blackpool, in tlic I>le of Man, might well be copied by towns wirch aspire for social success. They say at Black- pool that if you arrive at mv hour ot thi>day or iiicutyou are just In time for something br other. The story sops that early one morn- ing a dance was in pr»greM on one oJ Urn piers when a shipwrecked Bailor, who had been drifting about on a spar ami hail fottu- nately "landed" on the girders below, crawled up the step*. The M. C. came for- ward—they arc never surprised nt Black- pool—smiled, bowed and said: 'Tlens-d to see yon. sir. Can I find yon a putsu'r?" A MEAT COMBINE. Proposition to Wipe Out Local Slaughterers. AN IMPLIED, NOT OPEN THREAT What the People of Baden Declare They Will Do in This and Other Cities. VIDENTLY the meat business of this and neighboring cities is deemed of sufficient im- portance by the Eastern packing kings to war- rant' the waging of an aggressive war "lost our local dealer.*, both whole-ale and retail. To what lengths the war will be carried or to what extent tlio market will bo affected can only be determined by results. W. J. Martin of the Baden stfickyarua was seen by a Call reporter yesterday and when asked regarding the rumor that local meat-dealers were to bo forced to combine with the Baden people by means of heavy and ruinous competition he said: "The situation here at present is very "itniinr to that which existed some years ago in Chicago before I'iiil Armour and others combined and entered into the fresh- meat business. Agents were sent to the local wholesale dealers asking them to c me in and buy their meat already killed and dressed of the combine "The proposition was rejected, and one morning, without «ny previous \vi»riii:tt.'. Phil Armour's bis yellow wagons suddenly made their appearance on the streets as retail butchrr-shop* and sold meat at very low rates right before the doors of the retailers. "Of course, that sort of thing could last very long without ruining tome one, and as the combine had the largest capital th« small dealers were forced to buy their meat of the yellow wagons, which, In turn, forced the local wholesalers to become jobbers. "I am only telling you of what happened in Chicago, so you may be able to judge of wtiat la bound to occur here, not that I mean to say that wasona will necessarily be put on here in competition with the retail butcher-shops, because I harllv think it will be necessary to go to such lengths. But when Phil Armour, Nelson Morris, Michael Cudahy and Gustavus F. Swift pool their capital to drive local dealers nut of a market it is pretty safe to conclude beforehand that the local dealers will be forced in the end to come to terms. ' "V'-s. tho company has agents out n ixv buying cattle and bogs for intere deiivsry and uiherwisH farthering: the luiert'it^ »f the company on the coast. "Several wholesale dealers have already agreed to close tiioir tlaugbter-honses and buy their meat of the company just us soon m the company a ready to be^in d Ing it. "I can only jj've you the nnme of one of the lirn:.s at present Inview of the fact that it i; th«* largest tinn her*', it will I>h of Interest to the general public. 'Dig firm is Miller A: Lux. "The whole thing means simply this, the extermlnationlof the South San Francisco butcher business. "Why? Well, for a number of reasons. These people oming In here, have at their command millions of dollars un- limited capital— and lh« very finest appli- ances, under patent, for the killing and dressing of stock, and beside? that tney will lave appliances and machinery for the conversion of all that the South San Francisco people now throw Into the bay into marketable products. "The business at Baden does not mean simply a neat business. It means the erec- tion and equipment of a number of targe factories for the Durpo»e of using every p.irtiele of each animal killed. Nothing Will be wasted. "Tl;*» blood will be converted, by means of a patent process, into buttons, tLe hides are to be tanned and put on the market us leather, the horn?, hoofs and bones Will be made into glup, and the h >ir will be used for various purposes. Even tlie bloody water will be boiled down and reduced to .miii il glucose. ' a:! this ami much more will be dune under patents held by the comuany, and of course this will call lor the employment of much skilled labor and the outlay of a vast ain< on of capital. Some limn must, how- ever, plspse before all these things can be done, but you can depend upon it that it willall he done in as short a time as possi- ble. Let me say right here that all this means a great deal to San Francisco. "it means the centering o( the meat-pack- ins business of the Pacific Slope in this city. '•Tne cattle, sheep «nd hogs raised this side of Omaha, which formerly went to that city, will be shipped here. "AcenU are baying stock now for future delivery, and in addition to tbe Armour & Swift refrigerator-cars, now at Oakland, the Southern Pacific Company is building others as fast us possible to accommodate the ex- pected shipments. There are being built, both at Oakland and San Jose, Immense cold storehouses, and other arrangements are being made to carry on the business on a largo scale, resembling nothing this side of Chicago. •'By the outlay of capital enoug'i to oper- ato all these other business enterprises, which, In a measure are all dependent upon the fresh meat and packing business, the company fur which 1 am agent is ablo to raise the value of all cattle killed at least £2 per head, which, when the great number of cattle killed eveiy day to fill up the demand ol thin city alone is taken into consideration, will show the immense advantage the com- pany has over smaller dealers. "Much has been said of the advantage the Eastern dealers have over those hern in the matter of fattening bogs, but we have learned that it can be done just as well here by substituting steamed barley or Egyptian corn for the Indian corn used in the East. "About sixty men are nt work In the can- nery at present, forty girls have been en- gaged to begin work next week and the force will bo increased steadily until the fall capacity of the buildings now com- pleted is readied. The full force so far provided is 300. But this must not be taken for the total number of hands it Is pro- posed to employ, because other enterprises will be -*et in' motion as fast as the main business increases sulDcientiy to niHko them practicable. "All this may seem nt the first fiance a little hard on the local dealers, but such is not the case. The company can furnish meat, dressed ready for 'he block of the re- tailer, cheaper than those now killing their own beef can possibly do; not only that, but the company willfurnish better meat of all kinds than has yet been placed on the market. "That will bo done in this way: Fir a long time experiments have been underway as a means of deciding on what process, after killing, meat must be subjected to in order to ol)tai'i the best results, ami it has been demonstrated that meat first subjected to an icy draft and afterward to a temperature very warm will keep better and better sail the consumer than meat treated inany other way. "That, added to the fact that the meat comes to the jobber cheaper, and conse- quently to the retailer »nd consumer at lower rates, mates it apparent that the pro- posed operations of the company, instead of worKing a hardship to the small dealers, will bo really for their good, and the city will be benefited generally by the transfer of a very largo business from Omaha and other cities to this place. "Other concerns of liko nature though, of less iiin(jniti;du will not be affected pcreep- tablv." "How nbout the proposed meat war in Oakland?" Bskeil the reporter. "There is virtually no difference between San Francisco and Oakland, so far as the operations of the company concerned, as all possible fields of competition offering a profitable business will be entered. I think, however, that there is little prospect of Biich a thinE as a prolonged meat war here, M the small dealers are too much alive to their own interests nut to see the advantages of entering the combine, over those of a lone, profitless and in the end, to say the least, doubtful issue." Mr. Martin whs unable to say just when the proposed war would be declared. ROW, BOYS, ROW. Berkeley Students Take Up the Motto. Plans for the New Boathouse That Is Proposed for the State University. OH the past week the subject of a boat club has received con- siderable attention from the students at Berkeley and much Interest was manifested in the meet- ing that was held yes- terday to discuss the matter. Mr. Mays, president of the Athletic Associa- tion, called the meeting to order. Professor KeilogK, prwident-elect, addressed the boyd on the boating gui •'This is no formal talk," he wid, "only a few words on the subject of the boat club. "The university is not established for athletics, but interest in athletics shows In- terest in other things, and it is lor this rea- son that we give it our support." Professor Oayley spoke heartily In favor of the boat club and told of hli beta with Mr. Lyle ou the annual Oxtord-Cambridge a trace. Mr. Lyle spoke also of the races in Eng- land, and described the poor boating facili- ties at Yale. He said that the students must go carefully or they would draw the interest from the other sports. He wished them all possible success, and said that if they could not get any other coxswain he would act as such. Mr. Cory, the new professor in electrical engineering, gave the boys some sound ad- vire. He is lately from Cornell, and was very much interested tn boating while there. "The facilities there are not good," said he. "as the boathnuse is a mile from the campus and the only available method of getting there is to walk. The lake on which they practice Is often very rough, while San Franctsi o Bay in many spots is ju3t right." Mr. Cory made an eloquent plea lor money fur the club and told the students that if they wished to be successful they would have to be liberal and that every man would have to give something, no matter bow much or how little. L. Jacobs spoke on behalf of the middle class of the Hastings College of Law. lie assured the Berkeley boys that the law stu- dents were more than interested. Tlu-y wore more than willing to contribute to the support of the crew if the organization was open to them. Mr. Brown represented the Dental Col- lege »nd expressed the hope that tho project would be pushed. After tln»s«j stirring speeches Iho presi- dent was empowered to appoint a commit- tee of five to consider the plan of organiza- tion and report at the next meeting. The meeting then adjourned, and those present examined the plans and specifica- tions that Mr. Jewett of the junior class had prepared. The plans are for n bouthoii3e 30x60 feet ami '_*> feet high. The building is to he two stories in height. The first floor is to bj devoted to boats only. A staircase will lead to the second floor, which will contain « reading-room, ladies' and gentlemen's •iressinii-rooms, closets, lockers and shower- baths. French windows will lead out from the second floor on to a balcony occupying the full frontage of the house. Adjoining the boathnose in the rear will be erected a cottage 30 feet square and con- lining two bedrooms, a parlor, kitchen and closets. li.is boOM will be for the use of a man and hli family who will take care of the boatliouse and keep it in proper condition. SHE'S ALL RIGHT. The Peking to Dock on Monday Next. GETTING OUT THE CARGO. A Stockton Steamer in a Very Tight Place— The Tug Annie Has a Sniashup. EFAIRS to the City of Peking will be nnde at Hunter* Point drvdock on Monday, as she will di etc t!:t'ie on that day. Her cargo is be- injc taken out vost ha-tf. the order Cor- bidding its removal having been with- drawn- An official well acquainted with the ship 3«ii] to a Call reporter vesterdry: "There was a time when the Peking was what you would call a crank ship, and not oniv that, but structurally weak. The City of Tokio had the same fault. But since then the Peking has had heavy timbers put in and an iron deck, and to-day I would call he as sufo a ship as any on trie Pacific. "She It ail right now. "In loading a Ion*:steamer like the Peking It is a great mistake to put ail the weight of the cargo into the. bottom of her hold. The engines are below the water line, more or less, and the result Is that when a ship so loaded (jives a roll she rights herself so abruptly that passengers are thrown about in a way they don't like, and that steamer eels a reputation for being a era >k without deserving it. "Take any model you like, put a heavy leaden keel on, give her a jerk to one side and see how quickly and abruptly she will civp a jerk the other wav before she rights herself. A little judicious distrttrutinn of part of the cargo above the water line would counteract nil this. "it I wanted to SO to tea in a ship like the Peking I should want to soj part of the cargo distributed between decks. It is for this reason that a vessel with yards and well masted does nut roll nearly so much "i-> a ship without ina»ts, after the modern war- ship pattern. "A proper baia'ice struck between the soars, the cargo and the ballast is all the Peking wants." The only sealers now remaining .in port are the Kate and Ann, Unga and 0. 11. Wablberg. They are waiting favorable weather to start for the north. The tug Annie after taking the news- papers over to Alameda yesterday morning met with a mishap. Captain Titchworth of the Annie has elected to foot the bill, so no blame la imputed. Shortly after the Anjiie bad landed the papers the jibboom of' .i sclmoner, i winsing with the tide, collided with the Annie's pilot-house, which had been only rebuilt a week or two previously. The Jibbooru and the schooner stood it, out the tug's pilot-house was crumpled up like a sheet of paper, the roof lifted off, the front stove in and a "general average" made of the windows and panels. The damages were repaired during the day at a cost of $30. The schooner J. G. Wall left the Union- street dock for the north yesterday with a non-union crew. The new Stockton steamer Captain Weber is still on the mud bank at Dutch Slough, live miles below Stockton, where she grounded a week ago. Then* is not the slightest chance of the Captain Weber be- ing got iff till tht next high spring tide, which will be two days nfter new moon. As she grounded on the top of a very high spring tide, it is even possible that she may not be got off till the next full moon, and then only, by artificial means. Meanwhile the Dauntless is making a tri-weekly trip eac i way. The lines of the barkentine Monitor were cut shortly after midnight yesterday by un- known persons. The Monitor tried to put lo sea d the morning, but the hawser broke and she had to return. The wheat fleet en route to Europe on February 1 was: From California 100 ves- sels'from Oregon 54, from Washington 54, or 18$ vessels in all. There were the Marion Frazer, with WJ ton«; the Mashona, with 4288 tons; and the Fort Stuart, with 4198 tons. Several ships are now loading to carry 4%0 tons each. There are now twenty-seven v-heat ships in port with charters, registering 80,300 tuns, and capable of carrying 80,000 tons of wheat, The recruiting in this city for the marines at Mare Island averages ten men a day just now, and 100 men are reported at the bar- ruck-. The ferry-boat Tiburon of the San Frnn- cisco and North Pacific Company's service Is to be refitted and her machinery over- hauled. As sue lies now at Main-street wharf she is a pretty sorrj-looking wreck. FRANZ LISZT.First Appearance of the Celebrated

Musician in Paris.Salnt-Saens inFebruary Century.

The young men of to-day can hardly ini-njiiiio Ihe eclat, the magical prestige, withwhich the name of Liszt flashed upon thehoi!/.* v of the young musicians of tho earlypart of thfl second empire— a name so for-eign to the ears of a Frenchman, sharp andhiMIDB as the edjjn of a sword that cutsthr. ugh the air, torn by the Slavic Z as bya stroke of lightning. The artist and theman seemed to belong to fairyland.

After having embodied on the piano thespirit ofromanticism, Liszt, leaving behindhim the glittering trail of a meteor, disap-peared for ■ lille behind Use curtain ofclouds which then

It was known that at the court ofWeimar, disdainful of his former success,he was occupied with serious composition, dreaming of a renovation of art— a purposewhich excited much anxious comment, sis is

always the case when a now world is to beexplored or an accepted tradition broken. Moreover, the Impression.* left by Lint inParis nave ample ground for all sorts of sur-mises.

Even the truth did not always appearprobable when it was t'lld about him. Itwas said that at a concert of the Co'.serva-tory, nfter the "Pastoral .Symphony" ofBeethoven had been performed, be haddared to play the whole composition overagain alone, the amazement of the audiencebeing quickly replaced by a tremendous en-thusiasm. Acain. it was said thai anotherday, bored witn trio docility of the public—tired of Mains this lion, ready to tear topieces any whodispleased it, forever fawn-log at bis feet- he determined to rouse itaiid amuse himself by coming late to a con-cert at the Italiens an.; calling on some C:ielames in their boxes, laughing and chatting, until the ]'<>:: begun to growl and roar. Atlast he seated himself at the piano, whenthe fury had abated, the only demonstra-tions being tliose of pleasure and admira-tion.

Itwas New Year's morning, and the fas)-.-

anthem that thrilled tho hearts of the con-gregation with a religious fervor so deepthat the collection plate passed by nnseen.

"Ah-ah-ah-ah nhmen!" swelled fit thecleiir soprano note, rising to high 15 anda qnarter.

"Ah-ah-ah-ah-abmen, ai'.-ah-a'un ah.men, ahmen!" swept out the mellow strainfrom the round, white throat of the con-tralto with so grand a sweetness that thebrown-eyed girlin the sealskin coat turnedto gaze and caught the eye of the bass solo-ist as she turned.

"Trs-lee, tra-!ee, tra-lecd'e-leedle, tonra-loora-llera-loo!" went the organ, soft andlow, somewhere in the depths of its har-monious bowels of melody."

For one instant the congregation el 1 oneanother's breaths: then th» organ struck upwith a blast like • steam whistle, and some-tiling was heard to drop out of the ehoir-iof tinto the vestibule witha thump like a load ofcoal.

A MEAT COMBINE.

Proposition to Wipe OutLocal Slaughterers.

AN IMPLIED,NOT OPEN THREAT

What the People of Baden DeclareThey WillDo in This and

Other Cities.

VIDENTLY the meatbusiness of this andneighboring cities isdeemed of sufficient im-portance by the Easternpacking kings to war-rant' the waging of anaggressive war "lostour local dealer.*, bothwhole-ale and retail.

To what lengths thewar will be carried or towhat extent tlio market

will bo affected can only be determined byresults.

W. J. Martin of the Baden stfickyaruawas seen by a Call reporter yesterday andwhen asked regarding the rumor that localmeat-dealers were to bo forced to combinewith the Baden people by means of heavyand ruinous competition he said:

"The situation here at present is very"itniinr to that which existed some yearsago in Chicago before I'iiil Armour andothers combined and entered into the fresh-meat business. Agents were sent to thelocal wholesale dealers asking them toc me in and buy their meat already killedand dressed of the combine

"The proposition was rejected, and onemorning, without «ny previous \vi»riii:tt.'.Phil Armour's bis yellow wagons suddenlymade their appearance on the streets asretail butchrr-shop* and sold meat at verylow rates right before the doors of theretailers.

"Of course, that sort of thing couldlast very long without ruining tome one,and as the combine had the largest capitalth« small dealers were forced to buy theirmeat of the yellow wagons, which, In turn, forced the local wholesalers to becomejobbers.

"Iam only telling you of what happenedin Chicago, so you may be able to judge ofwtiat la bound to occur here, not that Imean to say that wasona willnecessarily beput on here in competition with the retailbutcher-shops, because Iharllv think itwillbe necessary to go to such lengths. But when Phil Armour, Nelson Morris,Michael Cudahy and Gustavus F. Swiftpool their capital to drive local dealers nutof a market it is pretty safe to concludebeforehand that the local dealers will beforced in the end to come to terms. '

"V'-s. tho company has agents out n ixvbuying cattle and bogs for intere deiivsryand uiherwisH farthering: the luiert'it^ »fthe company on the coast.

"Several wholesale dealers have alreadyagreed to close tiioir tlaugbter-honses andbuy their meat of the company just us soonm the company a ready to be^in dIng it."Ican only jj've you the nnme of one of

the lirn:.s at present Inview of the factthat it i;th«* largest tinn her*', it will I>h ofInterest to the general public. 'Dig firm isMiller A: Lux.

"The whole thing means simply this, theextermlnationlof the South San Franciscobutcher business.

"Why? Well, for a number of reasons. These people • oming In here, have at theircommand millions of dollars

—un-

limited capital— and lh« very finest appli-ances, under patent, for the killing anddressing of stock, and beside? that tneywill lave appliances and machinery forthe conversion of all that the South SanFrancisco people now throw Into the bayinto marketable products.

"The business at Baden does not meansimply a neat business. Itmeans the erec-tion and equipment of a number of targefactories for the Durpo»e of using everyp.irtiele of each animal killed. NothingWill be wasted.

"Tl;*»blood willbe converted, by meansof a patent process, into buttons, tLe hidesare to be tanned and put on the market usleather, the horn?, hoofs and bones Will bemade into glup, and the h >ir will be usedfor various purposes. Even tlie bloodywater willbe boiled down and reduced to.miii ilglucose.'

a:! this ami much more will be duneunder patents held by the comuany, and ofcourse this willcall lor the employment ofmuch skilled labor and the outlay of a vastain<•on of capital. Some limn must, how-ever, plspse before all these things can bedone, but you can depend upon it that itwillall he done in as short a time as possi-ble. Let me say right here that all thismeans a great deal to San Francisco.

"itmeans the centering o( the meat-pack-

ins business of the Pacific Slope in this city.'•Tne cattle, sheep «nd hogs raised this

side of Omaha, which formerly went to thatcity, will be shipped here.

"AcenU are baying stock now for futuredelivery, and in addition to tbe Armour &Swift refrigerator-cars, nowat Oakland, theSouthern Pacific Company is building othersas fast us possible to accommodate the ex-pected shipments. There are being built, both at Oakland and San Jose, Immensecold storehouses, and other arrangementsare being made to carry on the business ona largo scale, resembling nothing this sideof Chicago.

•'By the outlay of capital enoug'i to oper-ato all these other business enterprises, which, In a measure are all dependent uponthe fresh meat and packing business, thecompany fur which 1 am agent is ablo toraise the value of all cattle killed at least £2per head, which, when the great number ofcattle killed eveiy day to fillup the demandol thin cityalone is taken into consideration, willshow the immense advantage the com-pany has over smaller dealers.

"Much has been said of the advantage theEastern dealers have over those hern in thematter of fattening bogs, but we havelearned that it can be done just as well hereby substituting steamed barley or Egyptiancorn for the Indian corn used in the East.

"About sixty men are nt work In the can-nery at present, forty girls have been en-gaged to begin work next week and theforce will bo increased steadily until thefall capacity of the buildings now com-pleted is readied. The full force so farprovided is 300. But this must not be takenfor the total number of hands it Is pro-posed to employ, because other enterpriseswill be -*et in' motion as fast as the mainbusiness increases sulDcientiy to niHko thempracticable.

"All this may seem nt the first fiance alittlehard on the local dealers, but such is

not the case. The company can furnishmeat, dressed ready for 'he block of the re-tailer, cheaper than those now killing theirown beef can possibly do; not only that, but the company willfurnish better meat ofall kinds than has yet been placed on themarket.

"That willbo done in this way:Fir a longtime experiments have been underway as ameans of deciding on what process, afterkilling, meat must be subjected to in orderto ol)tai'i the best results, ami it has beendemonstrated that meat first subjected to anicy draft and afterward to a temperaturevery warm willkeep better and better sailthe consumer than meat treated inany otherway.

"That, added to the fact that the meatcomes to the jobber cheaper, and conse-quently to the retailer »nd consumer atlower rates, mates itapparent that the pro-posed operations of the company, instead ofworKing a hardship to the small dealers, willbo really for their good, and the city willbe benefited generally by the transfer of avery largo business from Omaha and othercities to this place.

"Other concerns of liko nature though, ofless iiin(jniti;du willnot be affected pcreep-tablv."

"How nbout the proposed meat war inOakland?" Bskeil the reporter.

"There is virtually no difference betweenSan Francisco and Oakland, so far as theoperations of the company concerned, asall possible fields of competition offering aprofitable business willbe entered. Ithink, however, that there is little prospect ofBiich a thinE as a prolonged meat war here,M the small dealers are too much alive totheir own interests nut to see the advantagesof entering the combine, over those of alone, profitless and in the end, to say theleast, doubtful issue."

Mr. Martin whs unable to say just whenthe proposed war would be declared.

Berkeley Students TakeUp the Motto.

Plans for the New Boathouse That IsProposed for the State

University.

OH the past weekthe subject of a boatclub has received con-siderable attention fromthe students at Berkeleyand much Interest wasmanifested in the meet-ing that was held yes-terday to discuss thematter.

Mr. Mays, presidentof the Athletic Associa-tion, called the meeting

to order. Professor KeilogK, prwident-elect,addressed the boyd on the boating gui

•'This is no formal talk," he wid, "only

a few words on the subject of the boat club.Fou have the hearty sympathy of thefaculty in iliis enterprise.

"We want a boat ci«ib anl a good one ifwe hive any."I am surprised that there has been no

boat, club these late years."The Water is not far off. You have no

further to no than the ¥ale men who travelseveral miles to practice. There is no rea-iin uhy we Should not have a boat crew.

MWe are somewhat stimulated by the in-U>rest tlint Is shown in the crews in theEastern collets and by t:e fact that Stan-fi rd ha« already organized a dub.

"Wo dn not care to be c-utiione by ayounger institution. The boating interestshould ba rquil to the interest in otherbranches of athletics.

"On behalf of the faculty Iwish yon suc-cess and hope that the rallying cry of thestudents, 'row, boys, rowI' willlead us onto vletoiv."

:,(•! Edward*, professor in mathe-matics, was ihe next speaker. He was veryhtimoroao ami kept the students laughingcootiouaUy.

"Looking out of the window and seeingthu storm th iis raging," he saiil, "Iwouldadvise you to build an ark rather than ashell."Isee that many of you part your hair :u

the mi Idle toaccord with toe fact that thelenst resistance offered will obtain the bestresults. This shows a good beginning.

"1hope the interest willincrease piODor-liunatplr.

"Profes»or Kellogg has said that it sur-prised him that we have not I.mi a b atclub before. lie is mistaki we had on*twenty-one >» <ars aco. Iiwas composed ofn tie or ten students of the classes of '72, '73ami '71. They hired a barge on Lnke Mer-rlti when the eoursa was not nearly as gooda* itis now. After a month of hard train-Ing they disbanded for lack of competition,Iwant it understood that while Stanfordhas taken the initiative now we bad a boatclub b -lore.. "The university is not established forathletics, but interest in athletics shows In-terest in other things, and it is lor this rea-son that we give it our support."

Professor Oayley spoke heartily In favorof the boat club and told of hlibeta withMr. Lyle ou the annual Oxtord-Cambridge

a trace.Mr. Lyle spoke also of the races in Eng-

land, and described the poor boating facili-ties at Yale. He said that the studentsmust go carefully or they would draw theinterest from the other sports. He wishedthem all possible success, and said that ifthey could not get any other coxswain hewould act as such.

Mr. Cory, the new professor in electricalengineering, gave the boys some sound ad-vire. He is lately from Cornell, and wasverymuch interested tn boating while there.

"The facilities there are not good," saidhe. "as the boathnuse is a mile from thecampus and the only available method ofgetting there is to walk. The lake on whichthey practice Is often very rough, while SanFranctsi o Bay in many spots is ju3t right."

Mr. Cory made an eloquent plea lormoney fur the club and told the studentsthat if they wished to be successful theywould have to be liberal and that every manwould have to give something, no matterbow much or how little.

L. Jacobs spoke on behalf of the middleclass of the Hastings College of Law. lieassured the Berkeley boys that the law stu-dents were more than interested. Tlu-ywore more than willing to contribute to thesupport of the crew if the organization wasopen to them.

Mr. Brown represented the Dental Col-lege »nd expressed the hope that tho projectwould be pushed.

After tln»s«j stirring speeches Iho presi-dent was empowered to appoint a commit-tee of five to consider the plan of organiza-tion and report at the next meeting.

The meeting then adjourned, and thosepresent examined the plans and specifica-tions that Mr. Jewett of the junior classhad prepared.

The plans are for n bouthoii3e 30x60 feetami '_*> feet high. The building is to hetwo stories in height. The first floor is to bjdevoted to boats only. A staircase willleadto the second floor, which will contain «reading-room, ladies' and gentlemen's•iressinii-rooms, closets, lockers and shower-baths.

French windows will lead out from thesecond floor on to a balcony occupying thefull frontage of the house.

Adjoining the boathnose in the rear willbe erected a cottage 30 feet square and con-lining two bedrooms, a parlor, kitchen and

closets.li.is boOM will be for the use of a man

and hli family who will take care of theboatliouse and keep it in proper condition.

drawn- An official well acquainted withthe ship 3«ii] to a Call reporter vesterdry:

"There was a time when the Peking waswhat you would call a crank ship, and not

oniv that, but structurally weak. The City

of Tokio had the same fault. Butsince thenthe Peking has had heavy timbers put inand an iron deck, and to-day Iwould callhe as sufo a ship as any on trie Pacific.

"She Itail right now."Inloadinga Ion*:steamer like the Peking

It is a great mistake to put ail the weight ofthe cargo into the. bottom of her hold. Theengines are below the water line, more orless, and the result Is that when a ship soloaded (jives a roll she rights herself soabruptly that passengers are thrown aboutin a way they don't like, and that steamereels a reputation for being a era >k withoutdeserving it.

"Take any model you like, put a heavyleaden keel on, give her a jerk to one sideand see how quickly and abruptly she willcivp a jerk the other wav before she rights

herself. A little judicious distrttrutinn ofpart of the cargo above the water line wouldcounteract nil this.

"it Iwanted to SO to tea in a ship likethe Peking Ishould want to soj part of thecargo distributed between decks. Itis forthis reason that a vessel withyards andwell masted does nut roll nearly so much "i->

a ship without ina»ts, after the modern war-ship pattern.

"A proper baia'ice struck between thesoars, the cargo and the ballast is all thePeking wants."

The only sealers now remaining .in portare the Kate and Ann, Unga and 0. 11.Wablberg. They are waiting favorableweather to start for the north.

The tug Annie after taking the news-papers over to Alameda yesterday morningmet with a mishap. Captain Titchworth ofthe Annie has elected to foot the bill, so noblame la imputed. Shortly after the Anjiiebad landed the papers the jibboom of'.isclmoner, iwinsing with the tide, collidedwith the Annie's pilot-house, which hadbeen only rebuilt a week or two previously. The Jibbooru and the schooner stood it, outthe tug's pilot-house was crumpled up likea sheet of paper, the roof lifted off, thefront stove in and a "general average" madeof the windows and panels. The damageswere repaired during the day at a costof $30.

The schooner J. G. Wall left the Union-street dock for the north yesterday witha

non-union crew. The new Stockton steamer Captain

Weber is still on the mud bank at DutchSlough, live miles below Stockton, whereshe grounded a week ago. Then* is not theslightest chance of the Captain Weber be-ing got ifftill tht next high spring tide, which will be two days nfter new moon. As

she grounded on the top of a very highspring tide, it is even possible that she maynot be got off till the next full moon, andthen only,by artificial means. Meanwhilethe Dauntless is making a tri-weekly tripeac i way.

The lines of the barkentine Monitor werecut shortly after midnight yesterday by un-known persons. The Monitor tried to putlo sea d the morning, but the hawser brokeand she had to return.
