"She was an unlucky ninth in the

Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes two weeks ago. I thought she would handle

the 1400 metres," Squair said.

"I wanted an experienced jockey so I got Glen when a couple of others

wouldn't ride her."

Up until a few weeks ago, Squair, 79, had been riding trackwork

including on his stable star who was responsible for his shoulder injury.

"Lucy dumped me and I hurt my shoulder and wrist. That was it for

me as a trackwork rider, as my wife has put her foot down," Squair said.

Colless made a rare appearance in Brisbane for a Group ride on Love

You Lucy.

"I think Barry makes me look young these days but he always has a

good horse," a laconic Colless said.

As for where to next with Love You Lucy, Squair was unsure given the

rapid progression of the mare.

"I really don't know where to go with her next, the owners were over the

moon when we won the Silk Stocking, now she's won a Group 2." he said.

"She's been up for a long time now, so maybe I'll give her a break but

If I see something I like I might go one more.

"She's a lovely filly. I always thought she would do well but she's won

her eight races so quickly that it's certainly surprised me."

A homebred mare, Love You Lucy (4 m Love Conquers All -

Whitechapel by Giant’s Causeway), has now won eight of her 19 starts

with a further six placings for prize-money earnings of $356,325.

The four-year-old is one of two winners for Whitechapel, who herself

is a daughter of the MVRC Sunline Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner Spurn

(Flying Spur).

An unraced two-year-old half-sister to Love You Lucy named Bonnie

Boru (Holy Roman Emperor) is raced by the same syndicate and she is

currently in work with Gold Coast trainer Paula Barron, while Whitechapel

slipped to the former Aquis Farm shuttler last year.

Love You Lucy’s sire Love Conquers All (Mossman) will return to

Queensland this year to stand at Clear Mountain Fairview on the Darling

Downs after a stint in Victoria on the Sun Stud roster.

Also the sire of fellow Group 2 winner Savanna Amour, he will stand

for a fee of $5,500 (inc GST).

Vanna Girl continues to bloom with The Roses her latest success

The spring is firmly on the agenda with nothing ruled out for Vanna

Girl (Husson) after she stretched her remarkable winning streak to four

with an emphatic display in The Roses (Gr 2, 1800m) at Eagle Farm

yesterday.

The Toby and Trent Edmonds-trained Vanna Girl, the second leg of

a winning double for the leading Gold Coast stable, rounded out her first

racing preparation consisting of ten starts for seven victories.

The $2.10 favourite, Vanna Girl came from well back in the field after

drawing barrier 13 to beat Cellarmaid (Husson) ($31) by one and a quarter

lengths with Sydney filly Celestial Falls (Hinchinbrook) ($5) a neck away

in third place.

Trent Edmonds praised jockey Brad Stewart for his masterful ride on

the in-form filly.

"What a ride from Brad. Vanna Girl is so versatile she can lead or get

back but you still have to make the right decisions," Edmonds said.

As for the Husson (Hussonet) filly’s future, first it would be the paddock

before connections looked to the Melbourne carnival later this year.

"We will probably concentrate on the fillies and mares races but she

will be entered for everything," Edmonds said.

"Don't forget this is virtually her first campaign. She has effectively

had three weeks off this year."

Stewart believes Vanna Girl was capable of progressing from her

brilliant campaign.

"She is so versatile and there is more to come," he said.

Vanna Girl (3 f Husson - Logan’s Choice by Redoute’s Choice), who

was a $40,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase by Edmonds Racing,

has won seven races and has earnings of $371,300.

She is a half-sister to former stakes-placed stablemate Plucky Girl

(Pluck) and three other winners from six foals to race out of three-time

winner Logan’s Choice, who has a yearling filly and a weanling colt by

Vinery Stud’s Star Turn (Star Witness).

<< Continued from page 4

The Star Turn filly will be offered in the

Round 2 session of next month’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

“She always had that quality about her, very correct, a lovely head, a

real presence but she just took some time to really strengthen up which we

expected,’’ Vinery Stud bloodstock manager Adam White said.

“She’s seeing the benefit now of the patience her trainers and

connections have shown her. She’s the real deal.

“The half-sister coming to Easter in July, she’s probably a bit more

forward, got more strength at this age, and being by Star Turn you’d expect

her to get up and go a bit earlier given Star Turn won a race in November

of his two-year-old season.

“This filly will no doubt be generating a lot of interest at Riverside in a

couple of weeks.’’

Husson, who sired the quinella of The Roses, stands for $5,500 (inc

GST) at Aquis Farm’s Queensland base at Canungra.

Smart filly breaks through for important stakes win in Dalrello

A valuable stakes victory for juvenile Smart ‘N’ Sexy (Smart Missile)

in yesterday’s Dalrello Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm could see the

in-form Toby and Trent Edmonds stable send the filly for a break.

Smart ‘N’ Sexy showed ability from the beginning of her career,

finishing runner-up to subsequent Group-winning filly Away Game

(Snitzel) in the Calaway Gal Stakes (Listed, 1110m) before being deemed

worthy of a place in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) two starts

later.

She came from last first-up in the Bill Carter Stakes (Listed, 1110m) to

finish fifth, three-quarters of a length behind September Run (Exceed And

Excel), at Doomben on May 30 before scoring yesterday.

In a tight finish under jockey Robbie Fradd, who guided stablemate

Tyzone (Written Tycoon) to win the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m)

the previous week, Smart ‘N’ Sexy defeated One Shy Ruby (Rubick) and Be

Water My Friend (Headwater).

"Today's win was a relief. She has been getting terrible barriers and

having no luck," Trent Edmonds said.

"Smart 'N' Sexy was overdue for a win. You like to see smart horses

rewarded with wins.

"She is a black-type winner now so we might turn her out and bring

her back for the Magic Millions Guineas in the summer."

Fradd was also optimistic about the filly’s future next preparation.

"She might go on to win a really good race," he said.

Smart ‘N’ Sexy (2 f Smart Missile - Sexy Thing by Mossman), who was

purchased by former trainer Liam Birchley for $105,000 on behalf of the

Archer Racing syndicate from Book 2 of the Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale, has raced five times for the Dalrello Stakes success and two

seconds. She has returned $106,200 in prize-money so far.

Bred by Gerry Harvey, Smart ‘N’ Sexy is one of two winners for Sexy

Thing who is a half-sister to Cranbourne Cup (Listed, 2025m) winner

Sermon (Octagonal) and Merson Cooper Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner

Golconda (Snitzel). Her second dam is the four-time stakes winner Eureka

Jewel (Semipalatinsk).

Sexy Thing was sent to Harvey’s New Zealand farm Westbury Stud in

2017 and she has a weanling filly by Reliable Man (Dalakhani) and was

covered by champion sire Savabeel (Zabeel) last year.

It continues the success of the Twin Hills Stud-based Smart Missile

(Fastnet Rock) who is also the sire of Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1,

2000m) winner Maid Of Heaven, with Group 2 winners Smart Melody and

I’ll Have A Bit among his 18 stakes winners.

Six for Super OneNewgate Farm resident Super One (I Am

Invincible) sired his sixth first-crop winner

yesterday as Shadow Chaser (2 c ex Snow Flight

by Columbia) took out an open age maiden over

1200 metres at Kembla Grange. The Richard and

Michael Freedman-trained colt defeated Waihora

Jewel (Trusting) by a long neck with Ma Bella

Rosie (Sidestep) coming home a further head

away in third. Purchased by China Horse Club

for $300,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale from the Yarraman Park Stud draft,

Shadow Chaser is out of Snow Flight (Colombia),

making him a three-quarter brother to dual

Group 1-winning mare Viddora (I Am Invincible).

Super One stands at Newgate for a fee of $11,000

(inc GST) in 2020.

18 for Smart MissileSmart ‘N’ Sexy (2 f ex Sexy Thing by Mossman)

broke through for the first time in the Dalrello

Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Eagle Farm yesterday,

providing her Twin Hills Stud-based sire Smart

Missile (Fastnet Rock) with his 18th individual

stakes winner. Smart Missile covered 136 mares

last year at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST) and he will

remain at the same price this year at Olly and

Amber Tait’s Cootamundra property.

Third stakes win for GauloisA daring ride from Brad Stewart helped Gaulois

(5 g Street Cry - Celts by Lonhro) register a third

stakes success of his career when taking out

yesterday’s Eagle Farm Mile (Gr 3, 1600m). The

five-year-old led by a big margin in the middle

stages before holding on to beat the unlucky

favourite Niccanova (Nicconi) by a half-head.

Military Zone (Epaulette) finished just behind

the pair to take third in a bunch finish. Godolphin

travelling foreman Nacim Dilmi said it hadn't been

the plan to lead on the James Cummings-trained

Gaulois who usually raced off the pace. "When he

was so far in front I thought he would have to be

tough to win," Dilmi said. James Orman, who rode

Niccanova, said the gelding had no luck being

pushed deep for most of the race.

Brimham Rocks scores Tatts Cup winBrimham Rocks (6 g Fastnet Rock - Colima by

Authorized) made the most of barrier one to lead

home three of his stablemates as the Chris Walller

team dominated the finish of the Tattersall’s Cup

(Gr 3, 2400m) at Eagle Farm. Having enjoyed the run

of the race under Ryan Maloney, Brimham Rocks

came away to beat Savacool (Savabeel) by two and a

quarter lengths with Shraaoh (Sea The Stars) and Le

Juge (Dansili) finishing close up behind. "The ride

and the barrier were the difference today. Brimham

Rocks was one of the few genuine stayers in the field

and it told," Waller's Queensland manager Paul

Shailer said. Waller, who won the Tattersalls Cup

with Index Linked (Dansili) in 2016, brought up his

30th win in a Queensland feature staying race with

Brimham Rocks' victory.

Ramornie next for In Good TimeThe decision to send In Good Time (5 m Time

Thief - Turbo Rose by Strategic) to Brisbane in

search of firmer ground paid off for Wyong trainer

Tracey Bartley with the mare racing to an upset

victory in the Ascot Handicap (Listed, 1200m)

at Eagle Farm. Having her third start back from

a lengthy injury absence, the $61 outsider beat

Bandipur (Commands) by a length and a quarter

with Scallopini (Snitzel) another nose away in third.

"I'm over the moon," Bartley said. "I really thought

she was going well and the other day at Randwick

I thought her run was really creditable on a really

heavy track. Rachel King (jockey) came back in

and said there's nothing wrong with the way she's

going, she just can't go in the wet. I think to run her

on a heavy track at Randwick last start was actually

a good grounding for that race today." A tilt at the

Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m) at Grafton on

July 8 is now on the agenda for In Good Time.

Back-to-back for Wu GokChris Waller continues to dominate Sydney's off-

season staying races with the premier trainer again

providing the trifecta in a local feature at Rosehill.

Two weeks after producing the first three across the

line in the Lord Mayors Cup (Listed, 2000m), Waller

was again to the fore in the ATC Winter Cup (Listed,

2400m) on Saturday. Wet-track specialist Wu Gok

(6 g Sebring - Lipari by Redoute’s Choice) was the

common denominator, becoming the first horse in

history to win both stakes races in a calendar year.

"It was good to see the three stablemates fight it out,"

Waller said. "When the frontrunner is headed it's

not often they come back, to Adam's (Hyeronimus,

jockey) credit he rated it very well." Wu Gok, the

$3.80 favourite, kicked to score by a long head

over Carzoff (Zoffany) ($5.50) with Yulong Prince

(Gimmethegreenlight) ($4.80) dying on his run,

another short neck away.

Spring in Widdup’s step with AdelongEmerging sprinter Adelong (Medaglia d’Oro)

took her record to six wins from eight starts

when she landed the Catanachs Sprint (1100m)

at Rosehill yesterday. "She is improving and her

record speaks for itself. I haven't had any very

good horses but she is showing a lot, obviously,"

winning trainer Brad Widdup said. Adelong, the

$2.80 favourite, pinged the gates then relaxed

outside the lead for James McDonald, asserting

her dominance in the straight to streak to a

two and a quarter length victory. Inanup (Bon

Hoffa) edged out Superium (Verrazano) to grab

second but the winner was in a class of her own.

Widdup now intends to give Adelong a short

break before bringing her back for a spring

carnival campaign.

Word For Word nabs favourite at RosehillWord For Word (So You Think) broke a 14-month

winless drought when posting a last-stride

success at Rosehill yesterday. Chris Waller was

happy to see the four-year-old get the job done

as she powered late in a 1500-metre handicap

to nail favourite Bound To Win (Sebring) by

a short half-head. "She was running in all the

lead-ups to the Queensland Oaks a year ago.

She hasn't gone missing, but she has been a bit

disappointing," Waller said. "She hasn't gone to

that next level. But she is back on track and she

has been picking up some good prize-money

when she's not winning."

Sydney breakthrough for Lady BanffTalented filly Lady Banff (Top Echelon) has

added another string to her bow, coming

from off the pace on a heavy track to make a

winning return and provide the Matthew Dunn

stable with the first leg of a winning double at

Rosehill. Lady Banff won two of her first four

starts in Queensland in her first preparation

which culminated when she led the field in

the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) at

the Gold Coast in January. Racing on a heavy

track for the first time in yesterday's Darley 2YO

Handicap (1100m), Lady Banff ($4.40) defeated

Meadow Land (Not A Single Doubt) by a neck

with one and a quarter lengths to Mrs Maisel

(Hinchinbrook) third. "I thought 100 metres out

of the stalls it was going to turn into a disaster but

luckily she's got a bit of class on her side," jockey

James McDonald said. "She's got great form and

she's very well-educated by the Dunn stable

and she overcame a few hurdles today which is

a good thing considering she's been very one

dimensional but she's learning all the time.”

Winter cups on radar for Attention Run

Kris Lees will give Attention Run (Hurricane Run)

a tilt at some off-season stakes races after the

mare returned from a three-month break to win

yesterday's De Bortoli Wines Handicap (1800m)

at Rosehill. "She is very capable fresh and she won

her first Australian start over a mile at a similar

time last year," Lees said. "In the autumn, she ran

well fresh then we just felt she wasn't at her peak.

She's pretty good on soft ground so we thought the

winter would be the right time for her." Ridden by

Andrew Adkins, Attention Run finished resolutely

to score by a length and three-quarters over

Soldier Of Love (Mawingo) with Across Dubai

(Cape Cross) a further half-head away in third.

The WJ McKell Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill in

two weeks and next month's Grafton Cup (Listed,

2350m) are now both options for the mare.

Harbour Views handles Valley testHarbour Views (Le Havre) relished the step up in

distance with a dominant victory in yesterday’s

Inglis July Sales Series Handicap (2040m) at

Moonee Valley. Ridden by John Allen, Harbour

Views raced to a two and a quarter length win

over Double You Tee (Written Tycoon) with

Django Freeman (Campanologist) another

length and three-quarters away in third.

Winning trainer Matthew Williams said he now

intends to give Harbour Views a short break

before orchestrating a spring program towards

a start in October's Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m).

"A tick for 2000 metres and a tick for getting

around the Valley," Williams said. "He'll only

have a short let-up, just a couple of weeks in the

paddock, he'll do a bit of beach work and water

walker work and poke along. For a big horse

he's a very clean-winded horse so it doesn't

take a lot to get him back up again."

Two for two for CrosshavenCrosshaven (Smart Missile) may have earned

himself a short break after maintaining his

unbeaten record with a fighting win at Moonee

Valley. The Lindsay Park-trained two-year-

old followed an easy debut Geelong victory

with success in the Sheamus Mills Bloodstock

Handicap (1200m) yesterday. Lindsay Park

co-trainer Ben Hayes said he would discuss

with fellow co-trainer Tom Dabernig whether

to press on to the winter series of races at

Flemington or give Crosshaven a break and

bring him back for some early spring options

in August. Ridden by Daniel Stackhouse,

Crosshaven started the $2.45 favourite in

accounting for Island Joy (Hinchinbrook)

($9.50) with Not A Zac (El Roca) ($11) a half-

head away third. "I have to talk to Tom but I

have a feeling that he'll be running sometime

around mid-August," Hayes said. "He was a bit

green and lost around this tight turning track

but his class got him through."

Shot Of Irish, Plein Ciel cannot be splitShot Of Irish (Canford Cliffs) and Plein Ciel

(Mamool) proved to be inseparable as the pair

dead-heated for first following a thrilling finish

to yesterday’s Travis Harrison Cup (1600m) at

Moonee Valley. Shot Of Irish's trainer Richard

Laming admitted he thought Plein Ciel might

have overhauled him. "He looked like he was

going to get headed but he fought back to dead

heat," Laming said. Plein Ciel was having his

second start since being transferred to the Danny

O'Brien stable and assistant trainer Ben Gleeson

said: “It's good to see him come back second-up

and assert himself as a horse in form and we'll

take that today." Mask Of Time (Holy Roman

Emperor) was four lengths away in third.

Tough Valley victory for AshlorAshlor (Hard Spun) posted a first city success

since December 2018 when holding off a late

challenge from Morrissy (Snitzel) to score by

a short-head under apprentice Tahlia Hope at

Moonee Valley yesterday. Winning trainer Dan

McCarthy said Ashlor loves the turning Valley

circuit after he recorded his fourth win at the

track. "I guess the race mapped exactly how it

turned out," McCarthy said. "Funnily enough

he's won by a short-head but she (Hope) was

very soft on him in the last 100 metres. He

knows how to win but he doesn't win by big

margins, he just wins, but he was pretty brave.

It was a good, gutsy effort."

Perfect Jewel lands Hyperion for PetersThe Bob Peter-owned Perfect Jewel (5 m

Redoute's Choice - Star Encounter by Jeune)

backed up her Belmont Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m)

win with a victory in the Hyperion Stakes

(Gr 3, 1600m) at the same track yesterday.

The daughter of Redoute’s Choice (Danehill)

defeated The Velvet King (Universal Ruler) by

three-quarters of a length with Mississippi

Delta (High Chaparral) coming home a

further three lengths away in third. Perfect

Jewel is out of Listed scorer Star Encounter

(Jeune), making her a sister to Listed winner

Royal Star and a half-sister to six-time stakes

victor Star Exhibit (Statue Of Liberty). Perfect

Jewel’s grandam is Lady Ashford (Royal

Academy) who also produced Galaxy Queen

(Jeune), the dam of 2018 Railway Stakes (Gr

1, 1600m) winner Galaxy Star (Redoute’s

Choice).

I’m All The Talk to Darling ViewJust days after adding Group 1-winning sire

Playing God (Blackfriars) to their roster,

Darling View yesterday announced another

new addition to their stallion ranks in the

shape of I’m All The Talk (Stratum). Western

Australia’s leading first season sire follows

Playing God in transferring from Mungrup

and will stand alongside Lucky Street

(Oratorio) and Patronize (Redoute’s Choice).

A fee has yet to be announced.

Black Heart Bart retiredSix-time Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) has been retired for the second time

in his career after bleeding from both nostrils

and finishing last in yesterday’s Hyperion Stakes

at Belmont. The nine-year-old gelding began his

career in Perth before switching to the stables of

Darren Weir in 2016 and winning the Goodwood

Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m), Memsie Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m), Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m), CF Orr

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Futurity Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m). He was then retired at the end of 2018 but

was brought back into the stables of Lindsey Smith

the following year, and took out the Underwood

before finishing second in the Caulfield Stakes

(Gr 1, 2000m). After two unplaced runs at his

favourite track in Caulfield in 2020, Smith brought

Black Heart Bart back to WA but he failed to fire

and finished last in two starts. A $20,000 Magic

Millions Perth Yearling Sale purchase, he retires

with 17 wins and 19 placings from 62 starts, with

earnings of $4,852,950.

Oliver up for premiership challengeChampion jockey Damien Oliver is in the

running for this year’s Metropolitan Jockey’s

Premiership as he heads into the final months

of the season on 53 wins, five behind Craig

Williams who has won the title each of the

last four years. "I’m staying in touch but it’s

not going to be easy," Oliver told Racing.com

of the premiership race. "But I think the fact

the minimum is 56 (kilograms) gives me a bit

of a chance this year. Normally we’re working

off a 54 (kilograms) minimum and I can lose

a quarter of my rides over the winter when it’s

hard for me to do that weight. So it makes it a

bit more appealing and we’ll give it a crack and

see how we go."

Egan banned for whip useBilly Egan was handed a six-meeting ban by

the stewards for over-use of the whip on dead-

heater Plein Ciel at Moonee Valley yesterday.

The stewards found Egan had struck his mount

nine times before the 100-metre mark, where

only five strikes are permitted, for a total of 21

strikes over the course of the race. Egan was

also fined $1500 for the whip breach, his sixth

since last August.

NEW ZEALAND

Myers ready for action following Levin jump-outsLeading Central Districts jockey Rosie Myers

is well rested after the prolonged break due

to Covid-19 but was pleased to be back at the

jump-outs at Levin on Wednesday. “It was a

little bit hard getting into it (riding), but we

had jump-outs on Wednesday and I really

enjoyed it. There is a good crew around the

CD, so it makes it pretty fun,” she said. “I am

looking forward to getting back to the races,

but it is happening at the worst time with

the tracks, but I am just looking forward to

getting back out there.” Myers has been able

to spend some downtime riding around her

and husband William Fell’s Manawatu farm,

Goodwood Stud, who currently have two

Darci Brahma colts (lots 32 and 79) on offer

via New Zealand Bloodstock’s Weanling Sale

on plus.gavelhouse.com. “Over lockdown I

was mucking around with a couple of horses

out on the farm, which was nice,” she said. “It

made you enjoy horses again and spending

a bit more time with them. I really enjoyed

doing that.”

For almost 25 years, Brett ‘Lofty' Killion

has devoted his life to the racing

industry across a number of stables, up

and down the eastern seaboard.

“I love it all,” he said. "The characters, horses and

humans, they are what keeps me in the game. Some

of my best friends are people I met at Gai’s on my

first day working there, and the memory of some of

the horses I’ve looked after will always be with me.”

Killion is nominated for the highly-prized

Dedication to Racing Award, one of seven categories

that will be recognised at Wednesday’s 2020 Stud

and Stable Staff Awards, supported by Godolphin.

Among the past winners of the Dedication to

Racing Award, which is sponsored by the Australian

Turf Club, is Joe Agresta, best-known as Bart

Cummings’ long-term Melbourne trackwork rider.

It was another important member of the Saintly

Lodge team, stable foreman Reg Fleming, who

nominated Killion for this award.

"Lofty is honest, hard-working and ever-loyal –

and come what may, the horse always comes first

with him,” Fleming said. “He was nominated for

three categories of the awards and he deserves every

one of them.”

Those words mean the world to Killion, who is

deeply respected by all who have worked with him,

including Fleming.

"It means everything to me to earn respect,”

Killion told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday. "To

me, it doesn’t matter if it’s a Group 1 trainer or

someone just starting out. I don’t ask anyone to

do anything I’m not willing to do myself. It’s very

humbling to hear those words from someone that

has achieved so much like Reg.”

Known throughout the industry as ‘Lofty’,

Killion was given the nickname by Gai Waterhouse’s

foreman - and his future boss - John O’Shea when he

started out in 1996.

He laughed: "He asked my name and then said, ‘Sorry, we already have two

Bretts. You’re tall, you can be Lofty.’ It’s just one of those nicknames that stuck

from day one.”

When he started out at Waterhouse’s Randwick stables, he was continuing

a family tradition that dated back to almost a century earlier and leading jockey

and trainer Jim Barden.

"I basically finished my schooling when I was 17 and had a passion for racing

already,” he recalled. "Whilst racing wasn’t in my family, a few generations earlier

it was with my great great grandfather being a jockey and trainer at the turn of the

century; he regularly rode champion mare Wakeful.

"I went to a couple of yards at Randwick and someone told me to try Gai’s.

Then it took them more than 15 years to get rid of me!”

Throughout his time in racing he has worked for a number of leading yards,

operating as a key factor in the careers of many of Australia’s leading racehorses

during that period.

“From Gai’s, I worked with John Thompson in Queensland until Patinack

finished up, then I worked for John O’Shea in Melbourne with Godolphin and

now I’m back up in Queensland with Chris Waller. I’ve been so grateful to have

learned from the best. There’s been the pure horsemanship of John Thompson,

the work ethic of Gai Waterhouse, the sharpness of John O’Shea’s mind and Chris

Waller’s methodical search for perfection.

"When I first started with Gai we had horses there like Stony Bay, Pharaoh,

Juggler and All Our Mob. I was fortunate to strap Nothin' Leica Dane once, I got to

travel around with the horses and got to strap in races like the Caulfield Cup and

Melbourne Cup and have success in the Magic Millions with Excellerator.

"In those days Gai really dominated and we had so much success and so

many good times. Being on hand for Gai’s first Golden Slipper when Ha Ha

headed a stable trifecta was great, and the horses just kept coming: Dance Hero,

Al Maher, Sunday Joy, Tuesday Joy, More Joyous, Iron Horse, Secret Savings. We

won over 100 Group 1 races in my time there.

"My favourite horse would be from my time there, it was the 2001 Metropolitan

winner, Dress Circle. He was a Zabeel gelding that won the Tatts Cup and Colin

Stephen leading up to his Group 1 win. He was super tough with a great pain

threshold. He could mix it first-up with sprinters and was very versatile.”

It was also at the Waterhouse stable that he had the opportunity to work

under the horseman that he sees as one of his greatest mentors, Tommy “Spider”

Barker.

"Spider was a long-time foreman with Tommy Smith and stayed on with

Gai. He’d seen it all and taught me things and gave me advice that still helps me

through every day,” he said. "With Spider, I learnt about work ethic. I learnt not to

cut corners and the value of getting a stable off to a good start. I soon cottoned on

to getting in early.

"It is a habit I still have today and I find that you pick up so many little things,

alone and early, with the horses that can be missed once you get busy. Things

like the horse's droppings, how healthy they are, a lame step. Or something like

a horse that doesn’t usually lie down is down and telling you it’s at the end of

its prep.

"Spider taught me how to handle large numbers of staff and horses. When I

started, we had 90 horses and it swelled over the years from anywhere between

140 and 200 horses. He was a great horseman and being around him, you picked

up many little tricks. We remained good friends in his retirement after he moved

to the Southern Highlands."

The time came though when Killion shifted away from Sydney, first joining

Nathan Tinkler’s Patinack operation in Queensland under John Thompson.

"I moved to Queensland in 2011 with my beautiful wife Dominika after John

Thompson approached me to run the Patinack Farm stable in the Gold Coast

hinterland,” he said. "It was on a beautiful farm with a great track and we had

between 50-70 horses."

"At Patinack, my fondest memory is winning the 2012 Tattersall's Tiara with

Pear Tart. She was a barrier rogue and took a lot of work to get to the track. We won

a Grafton Cup with Shamadashing beating stablemate Saint Encosta, while other

notables were Boys On Tour, Peron, Pretty Pins and having Nechita on the farm

as a two-year-old.”

From there, he reunited with O’Shea at Godolphin down in Melbourne. If

a story epitomises his dedication to racing, though, it comes in the weeks after

O’Shea departed the operation, when Darren Beadman was operating as interim

trainer during the 2017 winter carnival in Brisbane.

"At Godolphin, I had Hartnell under my care when he ran third in the

Melbourne Cup and was taking their horses to Queensland for the winter

carnival,” he said. "It was there that in 2017, when Darren Beadman had taken

over from John O’Shea, that we had Impending set for the Stradbroke when he

shifted a shoe and pricked himself the day before.

"He was considerably lame and after consulting with Darren and the vets I

stayed all night with him, icing his foot for 30 minutes every two hours. At midnight

he was a solid grade 4 lame but by 6am, he was improving to a grade 2. After much

pleading, they decided to run him and let the stewards make a call at the races.

“I continued to ice him right up until the float left and, long story short, he

passed the fitness test and won giving Darren Beadman a Group 1 victory as a

trainer. It was an extremely satisfying experience."

Soon afterwards, he began his current role as Chris Waller’s foreman at his

Gold Coast stable.

"Being with Chris has been a great experience,” Killion said. "I have heard

Chris described as the perfect mix of horseman and businessman and I find this

very true. I’ve seen horses go deeper into preparations than anywhere before

and this is due to them being kept happy in their work and no stone being left

unturned. There is no detail too small. A horse may drift in and out of form but

you learn to trust the process.

“We have had success in our yard up here with horses like Youngstar, Comin’

Through, The Autumn Sun in Group 1s.”

The Dedication to Racing Award winner receives, from the Australian Turf

Club, a trophy and $10,000, with $3,000 to their employer to share amongst staff.

"To be nominated alone was a great thrill and, to get here to this point, I have

enjoyed every step of the process,” Killion said. "It has given me a chance to do

some reflecting. It is a real honour to be considered in this category. It is such a

great industry with so many wonderful dedicated people.

"To win would feel like a great achievement. It is a job an industry I love and

respect and these awards are such a good initiative to let people know that you are

making a difference."

The Stud and Stable Staff Awards will be presented during a virtual ceremony

on Wednesday night.

Analysis: Classy filly Vanna Girl staged a very good effort in taking out this Group 2 event, her fifth win from her last six starts and her seventh win in a career record of 10 starts to date. She settled well for Brad Stewart back in tenth place, one off the rails, before improving (deep) nearing the home turn. She then sprinted well (wide out), hit the front coming to the 100m and then drew away to win impressively. Cellarmaid raced back in second last place in the 14-runner field, commenced her move (wide out) at the 300m and then ran on really well for second. Celestial Falls enjoyed a nice trip in fourth place on the rails from her good barrier (3) before getting into clear running on straightening. She then battled on quite well for third after appearing to have had every chance while Florent held on well for (3.3 lengths) fourth after being handy all the way. [KB]

Analysis: Underrated Toowoomba-trained mare Love You Lucy, at odds of $41, took her record to eight wins and six placings from 19 starts in taking out this Group 2 race with a game effort. She settled in third last place in the 14-runner field from her wide barrier (14) tracking a fast tempo (first 800m 45.09) before improving between runners at the turn. She took a split closer to the rails at the 200m and then finished gamely to score by a neck in a good performance. River Racer also settled well back, racing in 11th place before improving along the inner coming to the turn. She got through to be in a challenging position at the 200m and kept fighting well for second. The favourite Winter Bride settled in ninth place, one off the rails, moved up (deep) rounding the turn and then kept running on well for a close-up third with Jen Rules battling on well for (0.5 lengths) fourth after being handily placed on the rails. Analysis: With the run of the race Brimham Rocks strolled to the front at the 300m and was in no danger after that to score his second stakes (both Group 3) and sixth career win. He led early, trailed in third (rails) with a lap to run and remained in the perfect spot to the 400m. With plenty in reserve he moved out, took over at the 300m and was too strong, jockey Maloney able to drop the reins shy of the line yet two and quarter lengths in front. Savacool sat midfield (one out) from the 800m, went up five deep turning in, balanced at the 300m and ran on well to grab second short of the line. Shraaoh was third last at the 800m, still back on straightening, switched to the fence from the 300m and finished well along the inner for a solid third from Le Juge who moved up to fourth at the 300m, second at the 100m and stuck on gamely for fourth. Analysis: After racing quite well without winning in four starts since scoring at Warwick Farm in February, the Godolphin-raced gelding Gaulois scored a good win here. After crossing from his wide barrier (14), he was taken to the front nearing the 800m. He then set a solid place, established a break coming to the turn and then fought back well under a bold Brad Stewart ride to score a narrow but good win. The favourite Niccanova settled midfield before tracking up (three wide with cover) from the 600m but he was still conceding the leader about six lengths at the 300m. He then continued to make ground getting to within a half-head for second at the post after staging a solid effort. Military Zone had a good trip in fifth place (with cover) improved on straightening and kept running on well for a close-up third, finishing just in front of the winner’s stablemate Best Of Days who fought well for (0.4 lengths) fourth after being handily placed on the rails to the turn. Then followed: Mizlecki (AUS), Angelic Ruler (AUS), Abdicator (AUS), Pushin’ Shapes (AUS), Humidor (NZ), Taxagano (AUS), Gatting (AUS), Material Man (AUS), Arctic Stream (AUS) & Black Heart Bart (AUS), last.

Analysis: Finishing strongly and taking over at the 50m, Perfect Jewel had the favourite covered and went on to add win seven at start 21 including back-to-back stakes here. Drawn widest, she dropped out early to settle last picking up one spot past the 1200m. She moved out at the 800m, kept gaining on the pack and rounding into the straight went wider still. From the 300m she accelerated quickly, loomed within a length of the leader at the 100m then went past. Travelling well she went to the line under hands and heels, too good by three quarters of a length. Favourite The Velvet King improved to sit third (rails) from the 1000m, snuck through when the leader drifted out at the top of the straight and grabbed a length lead at the 200m. He still led at the 100m but had no answer when the winner swept past. Mississippi Delta was a handy fifth, one out at the 600m and still there upon straightening. She took some time to gather momentum, got to second then kept going to just hold third from Mizlecki who battled away gamely along the fence for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: A strong finish at Listed level at Doomben fresh up last start indicated that Smart ‘N’ Sexy was ready for the extra distance and she weaved her way to a very nice win here, breaking her maiden at start five. She began well yet drifted to settle fourth last, one out. Rounding into the home straight she was bottled up but at the 300m a huge gap opened, she drove through but had to avoid a weakening runner, moved out, balanced at the 150m then chased down the leader to get up by a long head. One Shy Ruby sat a half length back of the leader to the top of the straight, led narrowly at the 300m and kept on strongly only to be collared just short of the line. There was a good line up for third headed by Be Water My Friend who from midfield moved wide in the straight and finished well while Tumbler Ridge, from well back, hugged the fence the length of the straight and also finished well for fourth. SEBRING’S FASTEST, MOST BRILLIANT SON AT STUD!

GREAT VALUE!

Analysis: Headed inside the 200m after leading from the jump, Wu Gok fought back gamely the last few strides to score back-to-back stakes, the fourth in his eleven win career. He had an easy time in front, enjoying a comfortable lead starting the back straight. At the 1000m jockey Hyeronimus let out the reins to add to the lead and scooted clear on straightening. He was caught at the 200m and looked beaten but at the 100m fought back, grabbed a narrow lead at the 50m and stuck on gamely by a long head at the line. Carzoff sat last of the seven runners all the way to the top of the straight, remained on the inner and then found a narrow split inside the 200m. At the 100m he formed a line of three then kept going to hold a close second. Yulong Prince had the run of the race in third to the 600m, moved along the fence to track the winner into the straight, levelled up then led briefly at the 200m, lost the lead soon after yet battled hard for a close third. Analysis: In a surprise result at odds of $61, In Good Time broke through for her first win since taking out the Denise’s Joy Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone in May 2018 when scoring here. Having her third run this preparation, she settled in fourth place, tracking a quick tempo, before moving up nicely on turning for home. She raced to the front at the 200m and then drew away to score decisively. Bandipur settled back in ninth place, improved (deep) at the turn and did well in running on to finish second. Scallopini was ridden quietly as usual and settled in last place in the ten-horse field. He fanned deep on straightening and then made good ground to take third with Chapter And Verse battling on quite well for (1.5 lengths) fourth after being sixth at the home bend. [KB]
