• Facilities Planning:

o Riverside Community College District

o Ben Clark Training Center

o MVC Main Campus

PRELIMINARY IDEAS

• Ideas to improve the functional zoning of the campus.

DISCUSSION:

• An amphitheater, soccer fields, and parking structure have been discussed in the past. Will these be included in the CMP? In the past, city, owned land east of the fire station was talked about as a location for an amphitheater.

Response:

• MVC invites the community to send documentation of past discussions to the college.

• These facilities are being considered for the CMP through ongoing discussions about size and location.

• Is the demand for distance education addressed in CMP? Can students go to the other locations to attend online classes?

Response:

• MVC currently offers a small proportion of classes online or in hybrid form. Successful completion is lower than for classes taught face,to,face.

• MVC must decide how much to grow their online offerings.

• Lecture capture, student support, and tutoring space are needed to support the delivery of distance education courses.

• Is MVC courting nursing students from a recently closed nursing college?

• Riverside City College offers the district’s nursing program and is taking the lead in this effort.

• MVC’s educational plan should analyze and respond to community needs by providing programs that prepare students for high demand occupations and professions.

• MVC maintains advisory committees from many areas of employment. We are planning to restart the allied health advisory committee. The higher cost of delivering career technical education must be considered. Public safety is a high demand discipline for which MVC trains many students.

• The CMP process includes research into the regional economy and demonstrates that college attendance is needed to qualify for the better jobs. An associate degree in business has value in the local economy.

• Suggest contacting the Riverside County Workforce Investment Board for employment needs that may be more specific to the district’s service area and MVC’s local community.

• The logistics and health care industries are the largest employers in MVC’s community. We hear that some logistics companies do not feel supported by RCCD and are looking elsewhere for training.

• Within RCCD, Norco College is currently offering the logistics program. Future demand may justify the expansion of this program to MVC.

• Both MVC and RCCD conduct ongoing research into career technical education needs and welcome feedback from the community.

• Contract education can be provided for employers.

• Low persistence data may indicate that students are enrolling in classes across several colleges and districts.

• Future rules may use a college’s student success and persistence data to set the state funding level.

• Such rules could incentivize colleges to accept better prepared students and could discourage MVC from fulfilling its mission to serve struggling students.

• 82% of RCCD students are attending under CCCCO Board of Governor’s fee waivers.

• Does MVC track students after the leave the college? Are student exit interview conducted?

• Colleges that have attempted to interview or survey students have seen low rates of response.

• It helps that the state now requires CSUs and UCs to share information with community colleges.

• The legislature is enforcing rules for wider acceptance of community college credits across the CSU and UC system.

• Community colleges are implementing new tools to track students after they leave to find a job or transfer to a university.
