Volvo’s D13 (13 litre) and D16 (16 litre) engines are available in anumber of power outputs to suit a wide range of application needs.

An innovative combination of power and torque the D13 engine delivers 500 or 520hp, representing an impressive power output geared for minimal environmental damage.

For a gutsier performance, the D16 is a clever choice. Available in ratings of 580 or 660hp, the D16E is one of the most highlydeveloped engines on the market, offering you driving pleasure,reliability and complete economy. In fact, the Volvo FH16 660 is the most powerful truck on the Australian market.

Available with either SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) or EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) engine technologies, these enginesmeet the latest ADR80/02 exhaust emissions requirements.

In keeping with Volvo’s commitment to the environment, the Euro 4standard has been chosen as the preferred method of compliancerather than using alternative international standards such as the USEPA04, which allows over six times the particulate level of Euro 4.

The D13 and D16E are in-line six-cylinder diesel engines withdisplacements of 12.8 litres and 16.1 litres respectively. Bothengines feature a single cylinder head, overhead camshaft, 4valves per cylinder and electronically controlled unit injectors.

Maximum torque is 2400 and 2500 respectively for FH 500 &520 models, while FH16 models deliver 2800 Nm at 580hp and 3100 Nm at 660hp.

Featuring long stroke design to promote high torque and excellentdriveability, each model’s fuel consumption is low thanks tocomplete combustion control.

Quick and highly responsive, engine power is immediately sparkedfrom idling speed. At 800 r/min, 60 percent of torque is availablewithin 1 second. Extremely high engine braking effect is effortlesswith the Volvo Engine Brake.

Add an engine-mounted power take-off for direct drive of a hydraulicpump, and you’ve got an impressive engine. Power output 650 Nm is standard and 1000 Nm is available on special orders.

Exceptional auxiliary brakesExceptional is an understatement. VEB+ (Volvo Engine Brake+) is genius. Volvo’s high-efficiency engine braking system is basedon interaction between the exhaust pressure governor and Volvo’spatented compression brake.

With the help of a camshaft featuring a special profile and fourrocker arms, gas pressure inside the cylinders can be regulatedas necessary. This makes it possible to create considerableoverpressure during engine braking to maximise braking effecton the pistons. The result is smooth, extremely high brakingoutput throughout the rev range. This system makes VEB+ ahighly effective auxiliary brake. VEB+ is standard for the D13Aand D16E engines.

The VEB7 is the equivalent of VEB+ for the D13B EGR engine.Its design is based on the interaction between the VGT-Turbo andVolvo’s patented compression brake. Using a specially designedcamshaft in combination with rocker arms, the gas pressure in thecylinders is regulated to provide maximum braking power. VEB7provides extremely high braking torque already at optimum revrange of up to 340 kW.

Through the VEB+ and VEB7 engine brakes, safety can beimproved while reducing wheel brake wear. In combination withcruise control, VEB+ and VEB7 also create the necessarypreconditions for better fuel economy and higher average speeds.

I-Shift for intelligent transmission of powerI-Shift is so smart, it has a mind of its own. Volvo I-Shift is a 12-speedsplitter and range-change transmission with an automatic gearchanging system. I-Shift improves the driving experience, changingand choosing gears automatically to suit driving conditions.

I-Shift makes driving smoother and safer, and with long intervalsbetween oil changes, I-Shift promotes low operating costs andreduces the impact on the environment.

The V2512AT I-Shift is designed for the 13L and the V03112ATfor the 16L. Both are dimensioned for gross combination mass ofup to 70 tonnes but can be specially modified to handle up to130 tonnes (special conditions apply). This makes them ideallysuited for long-haul operations and regional and urban distributionapplications.

Manual gear changing capability promotes high driving flexibility.

The low weight system boasts a base unit, range-change housingand clutch housing made of aluminium, while helical gears in therange selection are designed for quiet operation.

Robust and dependable manual gearboxesEvery Volvo gearbox is tailored to its respective driveline and closelymatched to engine characteristics to deliver immense startingtraction and high cruising speed capability, thanks to close, wellmatched ratios and a wide gearing span.

The V2514B direct and VO2514B overdrive gearboxes arematched to the Volvo 13L engine and are tried and tested units.Overdrive makes it possible to better utilise the engine’s economyspeed range, resulting in lower fuel consumption.

The high strength V02814 overdrive gearbox is offered with the16E 580 engine and is designed to handle heavy and demandingtypes of transport. The highest gear is a direct gear that enablespower to pass through the gearbox with minimal losses.

All gearboxes are 14-speed splitter and range-changetransmissions. Long intervals between oil changes promote low operating costs and reduce the impact on the environment.

Incorrect down-changes are quashed by a planet range gear with arange lock. A cable link gear-changing mechanism gives a vibration-free gear lever, showing distinct gear positions. Combined withservo synchronisation, this makes operation easy.

Tough clutch for safe drivingA drag-type clutch is fitted with dual-disc configuration and hightorque rating. The clutch is easy to control and light to operate inclose quarter manoeuvres, while the disc damper absorbs jerksand protects the driveline’s components.

Rear axles that transmit powerIt’s your choice: the Volvo FH comes with tandem axles with singlereduction or hub reduction. Both feature low frictional losses andare available with fast ratios to promote low fuel consumption. The low weight of the rear axles also permits high payloads.

Rear axles feature rear axle casings in nodular iron, resulting in acompact design with high ground clearance. Maintenance-freewheel bearings that are lubricated and sealed for life at the factoryare built to last. Plus, the inter-axle differential lock and cross wheellocks are standard, which increases road-holding ability when thesurface is slippery or loose.

The axles come with a lubrication-free trunnion block, intermediatebearing and cross-tooth companion flange which results in areliable and maintenance-free propshaft installation.

D-shaped fuel tanks and large air tanksVolvo’s D-shaped fuel tanks are available in a variety of sizes andvolumes to provide optimum fuel volume in the available space. Madeof aluminium for low weight, fuel capacity is up to 1380 litres in a6x4 tractor. Steel constructions results in robust air tanks for thebraking and air-suspension system. Electrical systemAdvanced electricals work seamlessly to give you the best possibleperformance in every Volvo truck. Here, advanced technology meetsreliability to bring you a state-of-the-art electrical system.

Wiring in the chassis is protected by plastic sheathing, andmoisture-proof and protected connection boxes, couplings andconnectors and mechanical main cut-outs work to ensurefunctionality remains consistent.

Access to the cab is easy, with a generous 90 degree dooropening and a broad overhang to make room for a comfortableentry step. Three large foot-steps are illuminated and there is agrab-handle on both sides for easy entry. To ensure a safe exit all steps are visible on descent. For an even more convenient entry, the steering wheel can be tucked forward.

2008 Emissions and onwardVolvo takes its environmental responsibility seriously. Stringent emissions

standards are achieved using both Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technologies which are environmentally

sustainable and provide customers with the best transport solutions

for their needs.

Cleaner Exhaust GasesOver the past 10 years, exhaust

emissions from heavy trucks

have decreased considerably.

The step from Euro 3 to Euro 4

means that emissions of

particulates and nitrogen

oxides will be cut by 80% and

30% respectively. With Euro 5,

emissions of nitrogen oxides

will drop even further.

SCR – High Performance. Low Fuel Consumption.SCR technology is based on the after-treatment of exhaust gases. The main components in Volvo’s SCR system are a tank and an injection system for AdBlue, as well as a catalyticconverter. It is a robust system with few parts and high reliability.Once the exhaust gases leave the engine, all that remains to be done is to reduce the nitrogen oxides. This is done with thehelp of SCR. It is an effective and thoroughly tested method of cleaning up exhaust gases. The heat of the exhaust systemtransforms the urea into ammonia, which reacts with the nitrogen oxides in a catalytic converter, transforming them into harmless nitrogen gas and steam - substances that occurnaturally in the environment.

AdBlue - Safe and easily accessible. AdBlue is a stable, colourless, water-like fluid. 32.5 percent of itscontent is urea, the rest is deionised water. AdBlue is non-toxicand is not classified as hazardous to health, nor is the fluidflammable or explosive. It is not subjected to any specialrestrictions for handling or transport.

AdBlue is quality-assured and meets the recently announced ISO22241-1 standard. The amount of AdBlue required to meet ADR80/02 is around 3-4 percent in relation to the amount of fuelused. The enhanced combustion efficiency of the new SCRequipped engine range helps improve fuel consumption by up to 2percent over current Euro 3 Volvo engines. The onboard AdBluetank comes in two application specific sizes: 60 or 140 litres.

HOW THE SCR SYSTEM WORKS1. The AdBlue tank is placed beside the vehicle’s regular diesel fuel tank.

2. AdBlue is injected into the exhaust gases in the form of finely atomised spray. Precise metering ensures the optimum blend for every application condition.

3. In the SCR catalytic converter, nitrogen oxide is transformed into harmless nitrogengas and water. The catalytic converter is completely integrated into the silencer.

On Board DiagnosticA monitoring system (On Board Diagnostics) is also provided as part ofthe SCR package. It alerts the driver if the level of air pollutants in theexhaust gases is too high, and when it is time to refill the reservoir withAdBlue. In the event that the AdBlue tank runs dry or the AdBlue is notto the correct specifications, the driver receives an initial warning that

nitrous oxide emissions are at an abnormal level. If nitrous oxide levelsfurther deteriorate, the available torque from the engine will reduce thenext time the vehicle becomes stationary, unless the deficit is corrected.If the truck runs out of AdBlue, the truck will not stop nor will anydamage occur.

Volvo’s 2008 engine family will include Euro 4 EGR (Exhaust GasRecirculation) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) solutions.

Clean EGR – Low Emissions. High Reliability.Volvo’s clean EGR technology involves the partial recirculation ofcooled exhaust gas back into the engine in order to lower thetemperature of combustion and thus reduce the formation ofnitrous oxides within the combustion chamber.

Volvo’s EGR solution will not only reduce harmful emissions but offerbenefits to the customer in the form of excellent power density,improved driveability and enhanced engine braking. The systememploys three state-of-the-art components to achieve theseadvantages and deliver low emission outputs: Holset VariableGeometry Turbo (VGT), Hydraulic EGR Valve and Delta-pressure flowsensor. These parts work as a total unit to improve the longevity anddurability of the Volvo EGR engine, at the same time reducing exhaustemissions with minimal impact on the chassis or the truck’s coolingsystem. Volvo’s extensive research and development has achieved theEuro 4 levels without the need for exhaust after-treatment.

How the EGR system works

Stage 1A bleed off valve meters a precise amount of exhaust gas from the exhaust manifoldwhich is reintroduced into the engine’s intake for further combustion.

Stage 2This metered exhaust gas is cooled to an optimal temperature in a heat exchanger(fitted under the turbo) before it is introduced back into the fresh air intake.

Stage 3The recycled inert exhaust gases are now mixed with the fresh air intake, diluting theavailable oxygen and also absorbing combustion heat resulting in lower flametemperatures. This significantly reduces the amount of Nitrous Oxide (NOx) emissions.

SCR technology is ready for ADR80/03 (Euro 5) regulations, which come into affect in 2011.
