More than a MILF
When youre an aspiring actor trying to makeit in New York, any
role is a good role. A tercountless hours waiting in line or
cattle-callauditions, only to be told you arent going tobe seen
ater all, you would take anything, anyThird Moron rom the Let,
space-ller o arole. Not only would you take it, but you
wouldagonize over your one measly line or hours,testing out dierent
infections and accentsas you tried to milk the hal-second o
screentime you mightget or all its worth. You wouldcall your riends
and relatives and tell them towatch out or you, at the end o the
third scene,right beore they cut away. Its hard to imagineat times
like these that there are dangerous roles
out there. Roles rom which you might neverescape, that can ollow
you orever and colorthe rest o your career whether you like it
ornot. Henry Winkler will always be The Fonz.Always. And Jennier
Coolidge will always beStifers Mom.American Piemay not have been a
great work
o art, but it made you laugh a ton, and theone thing that seems
to have lasted, more thanthe band camp jokes and the warm applepie
jokes, is the acronym used to describeJenniers character: MILF.
Short or Mom IdLike to F***, i you havent watched a lot osophomoric
high-school movies or porn in thelast decade. Speaking o which, the
subsequentexplosion o the MILF-porn genre is strongenough evidence
that Jennier Coolidges role asStifers Mom was more than just a fash
in thepan. The problem I have with the whole MILF
thing, says Coolidge, is that were really sorto behind the
times. MILF seems like its thisnew thing, but in Europe the young
kid sleep-ing with the older woman is not really a newconcept at
all. It was a riend o mines birthdaya couple weeks ago, and ater
the birthday party
we all went out to this late night bar, and therewere some
British kids in the bar, and theywent berserk when they saw me, and
although Idanced with a lot o 21 year olds at the club, theBritish
ones were very adamant. They workedvery hard at trying to get me to
go back to theirhotel room. Ill just be really honest, you knowIm
single, and American Piehas gotten me a loto un nights.
The thing is, un nights or not, JennierCoolidge doesnt deserve
to be pigeon-holedinto everlasting MILF-hood. Shes made acareer out
o turning what are essentially sideroles into really memorable
characters, thekind you nd yoursel talking about long ater
youve orgotten who the stars o the lm were.Her perormance as the
air-headed dog ownerSherri Ann Ward Cabot in Best In Showis
aparticular avorite o mine, and one in whichshe showcases her
acility with comedic impro-
visation, evidence o the training she receivedwith legendary
L.A. based improv troupe TheGroundlings. She was there at the same
timeas Lisa Kudrow, Will Ferrell, Chris Kattan and
Cheri Oteri, some good company to be sure.Being [cast] in an
improvisational movie, saysCoolidge, is the ultimate compliment to
anactor. When the dialogue is up to you, its pretty
un, because the best improv really comesout o not pre-planning.
Ive never plannedsomething, and then later seen it and thought,
wow, that was great. Its always the stu that youjust come up
with on the spot thats always thebest stu. O course when youre
about to do aChristopher Guest movie youre ull o anxiety,you know,
because theres a huge possibility thatyou wont say anything unny.
And you dontknow what other people are going to say so
itsincredibly entertaining, because each time youdo a dierent take
people say dierent stu.
Coolidge brings her stand-up comedy toStardome Comedy Club this
July 16-18, a showshe says is just kind o stories strung together.
Italk about sex and I talk about dating, and how
weird it is to be a character actress in Los Ange-les. I hope
people are entertained. You know, itskind o an unedited, dirtier
show than I could
ever do on lm or TV. Who knows, maybe a-ter a night with her
sultry stand-up, youll orgetall about Jennier Coolidge, the
MILF.
