More Fun for More Learning: Poke-Biotic Go; An Innovative Approach to Antibiotic Awareness Week Aimee Petersen Critical Care (Medical Team Leader) Pharmacist Wyong Hospital, CCLHD, NSW Health [email protected]

How to play: 1. Find some antibiotics. They are everywhere! Don’t get too greedy, leave some for the

other trainers.

2. Once you’ve found some antibiotics, time to find and battle some bacteria/bugs. Bacteria look a lot like pharmacists, but they have a picture of a bug on their back.

3. Time to battle! Use the most appropriate antibiotic to defeat the bug. Extra points for using the ideal antibiotic and being SUPER EFFECTIVE!

4. You can only battle the same bug once each day.

5. Watch out, bugs can develop resistance over time! You can find a “susceptibility” token to test a bugs sensitivity

6. The trainer with the most points wins!

I learnt a lot more about what antibiotics pathogens develop resistance to

Thanks for making AMS fun

I have a notebook to record who is susceptible to what on each day to try to predict the susceptibilities later in the week and know what antibiotics probably wont work anymore

Your turn….

• This is a consequence of using microbe killing agents inappropriately

• It causes the runs

• Need to wash your hands with soap and water to kill the spores

• Faecal transplants may be a last line attempt to treat this

Clostridium difficile

antibiotic

diarrhoea

metronidazole

• This is a medication in the same class as ceftriaxone

• It is useful for the same resistant bacteria that we often use vancomycin to treat

• Dosing is 600mg IV BD but it does need renal adjustment

• It requires ID approval to obtain

ceftaroline

cephalosporin

5th generation

MRSA

• This is a type of infection. • It can sometimes result in

amputation • People with a disease that

requires insulin can get this infection

• Pseudomonas is sometimes implicated in this infection

• The antibiotic most commonly used for this infection is currently in short supply

diabetic foot ulcer

high blood sugars

leg

Tazocin
