India: More cashew-apple products from CRS

The Cashew Research Station (CRS), Madakkathara, near here, of Kerala Agricultural University has developed

three new products from cashew-apple. Professor and Head of CRS Jose Mathew and Associate Professor C.

Mini told this website's newspaper that the three new products - mixed jam, cashew candy and cashew pickle -

will be launched during the Cashew Day Celebrations on Saturday.

The CRS officials said that cashew-mixed jam, branded as Cashew man, is prepared using equal quantity pulps

of cashew-apple and mango. The tannin, causing astringency, is removed by immersing in salt water for three

days. It is rich in Vitamin C (18g/100g). Packed in attractive bottle, the price fixed for 350-gm pack is Rs 30, which

    is very competitive.

Cashew candy is a sweet product and it is prepared by removing tannin by immersing in salt water. The de-

tanned cashew apples are boiled and impregnated with sugar. Out of 1 kg of cashew apple, 745-gm candy can be

produced. The price fixed is Rs10 per 50 gm pack.

Cashew pickle is prepared from mature but unripe cashew apples. The price fixed for 350-gm cashew pickle is Rs

    25. CRS had established a FPO licenced cashew-apple processing unit and the unit has been producing and

marketing cashew-apple syrup and cashew apple drink developed by CRS for the past few years through the

    KAUs sales outlet at Mannuthy.

The main raw material - cashew apple - is collected from the cashew plantation of the station at Madakkathra.

Jose Mathew said that almost the entire quantity of around 6 lakh tonnes cashew apple produced in Kerala every

year is being wasted at present. He said that the CRS is ready to train and provide technical knowhow forprocessing cashew-apple to those interested in setting up commercial units.

Associate professor Mini, who is in-charge of research related to processing cashew-apple, said that as per the

calculations made by the station, conversion of 1 tonne of cashew apple into different products could generate a

net profit of Rs 10, 000 and would generate 50 mandays employment.

She said that cashew-apple products are comparatively less popular and therefore it would be more ideal for the

fruit processing units to take up processing of cashew-apple as an additional commercial activity.
