It’s in the cards. The secret of IED’s 8000 Series Totally Integrated ProcessingSystem lies in IED’s Intelligent Distributed Processing (IDP)concept, based on cards that slide into the 8001MFMainframe. Under IDP design guidelines, each card isoptimized for a specific range of functions through acombination of both analog and digital circuits. This designapproach allows IED engineers to fully exploit the specificperformance advantages of both circuit types, while avoidingthe inherent limitations of either.

The heart of IDP.Each 8000 Series card contains a dedicated digitalmicrocontroller unit (MCU) that controls all on-card functionsand also communicates with the 8001CPU Central Pro-cessing Unit. The MCU on each card means that the systemis not constrained by the limitations of one CPU, as is thecase with many other modular systems. In fact, any 8000system is easily expandable and networkable, allowingextremely large and complex systems to be assembled instages subsequent to the original installation withoutobsoleting or discarding existing components. With IED,you get the ability to grow.

More capabilities in less space. An IED 8000 system typically takes up as little as 10% of thespace that would be occupied by equivalent separate compo-nents. For example, one 8000 mainframe can hold 44 channelsof 1/3 octave EQ, two redundant power supplies, and aninternal PC, all in only 7 vertical inches of standard EIA rackspace.

More than audio. As shown on the following pages, the 8000 Series can providea multitude of control functions in addition to audio processing. The system even automatically checks itself and reports faultsto a remote location. In short, the versatility of 8000 Series islimited only by the imagination and experience of the designer.

More than products.IED backs the 8000 Series with a comprehensive program oftraining classes and technical support. Over 2000 peoplehave attended seminars at our multimedia facility in Louisville,Kentucky. In addition to an array of support documentation,IED can also provide custom software to make operating thelargest system logical and intuitive. With IED, your audiosystem investment is safe.

Health Care FacilityMaintaining precise volume level for paging is a requirement forhealth care facilities. The 8000 maintains the level of paging andbackground music while providing “code blue” and other voicealert messages. Network based hardware, ADA visual signage, and wireless paging stations are also key features of the 8000systems used in these facilities.

FactoryMachine noise varies widely in manufacturing facilities. The 8000provides intelligent voice announcements even in the worst noiseconditions by automatically adjusting volume levels to compensatefor changes in ambient noise levels. Integrated supervisory functionsalso provide emergency evacuation capabilities.

MilitarySound is critical on a mili-tary ship. Noise levels arehigh, and corrosion cancause system breakdowns. The 8000 Series systemuses advanced ambientnoise analysis circuitry toadjust output for varyingnoise levels. The systemcontinuously monitors itselfand reports all diagnostictests and faults to a centrallocation via the IEDnet net-work.

CasinoCasinos utilize more music and page zones than any otherentertainment application. With 24/7 operation, maintenancepersonnel can change system parameters for any area with just afew mouse clicks from any network port in the facility. The IEDnetbackbone links multiple 8000 frames and provides unlimited futureexpansion capability.

Transit FacilityTransit terminals present specialproblems when high noise levelsinterfere with the voice an-nouncement system. This partic-ular system networks over 145mainframes via IEDnet, provid-ing full system diagnostics andfault reporting to several central-ized locations. Additionally, pre-recorded voice messages syn-chronize with color visual infor-mation signs to provide com-plete Americans with DisabilitiesAct (ADA) compliance.

Theme ParkTheme parks often combine live entertainment with a varietyof special effects and scheduled productions. Queue lineannouncements and show control are common requirementshandled by the IED 8000. With the ethernet compatibleIEDnet network, entertainment providers may easily link allsections of the park providing ultimate system control andinterface ability.

Sports ArenaSports facilities have many spe-cialty areas in addition to the mainseating. Ticket areas, interior andexterior concourses, press boxes, and private suites all require zonedmessaging, BGM selection, andADA signage. Supervision andambient noise analysis are includ-ed as well.

RacetrackIn a racetrack facility, audiorouting is diverse. Multipleaudio feeds route to manydifferent areas. The 8000 systemroutes the race call, intertrackwagering, and paramutual feedsto various levels and grandstandareas. Ambient noise analysis, supervision, and ADA signageare also key features in aracetrack 8000 series system.

Totally Integrated ProcessingConventional audio systems collect, equal-ize, route, distribute and amplify audiosignals. IED’s 8000 Series goes beyondordinary audio signal processing by pro-viding total system con-trol. The 8000 Seriesmonitors and tests thesound system, stores andreplays messages, con-trols remote devices, networks with other sys-tems, and warns theoperator of malfunctions.

Totally Integrated ComputingThe intelligence in the 8000 Series re-sides in two very smart slide-in cards, the real-time controller card (8001CPU)and the communications processor(8101CPU). Each card handles specific

functions. The real-time controller stores, assigns and controls all card operationsand microphone station activity in thesystem, while the communications processorhandles setup, networking, message as-sembly / storage / playback, electronic

sign control and user i/o.Working together, the twoCPUs schedule and manageself-testing, event execution, system analysis, and faultreporting.

Totally Integrated SoftwareIED’s TIPS software familyincludes programs for

setup, calibration, and automatic oper-ation of the system. This standard soft-ware package allows you to create yourown graphic screens of your facility foreasier operation. With IED, you getsimple control of complex performance.
