Week 1: July 03 - 07 Location: 2829 Dallaire Ave, SW in
‘Garrison Green’
Camp A: Early Bird Gets the Worm – Technique Camp $100 Daily
7:00 - 8:30 am
Designed for cellists working on Two, Three and Four Octave
Scale and Arpeggios. We will study select Etudes to see bow
technique sparkle!
Camp B: $200 Ages 5-8
Daily 9:00 am - 1:00 pm July 7: Recital 12:00 am
During this mini cello camp we will focus on creating accurate,
clear, technique, develop and perform solos pieces in a masterclass
setting, sight read, write music, and end our days with fun
ensemble. Friendships blossom through these studies and while
discovering creative elements on guided nature walks, short
stretching sessions aimed at warming the body for cello playing,
and unstructured play at one of the three playgrounds within a
quick walking distance from Morag’s front door.
Camp C: $200 Ages 8 - 17
Daily 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm July 7: Recital 4:30 pm
Afternoon musicians are offered appropriately more advanced
ensemble work. Daily technique class features scale and arpeggio
games as well as etudes. Students ‘show and tell’ their assigned
well practiced music each day in masterclass. A large ensemble
unifies the group, inspires the young, and teaches leadership
skills to teens while separate teen and young ensembles ensure peer
groups thrive.
Camp D: $200 Ages 18 and above/Adult Daily 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
July 7: Recital 8:30 pm
Lots of delicious chamber music and Laughs! Over the course of
the week adults will learn chamber pieces while being instructed by
Morag Northey in a masterclass setting. Breaks are made extra
lovely as we pitch in to make a potluck table of treats.
Week 2: July 10 - 14 Location: 2829 Dallaire Ave. SW in
‘Garrison Green’
Camp E: Early Bird Gets the Worm - Technique Camp $100 Daily
7:00 - 8:30 am
Designed for cellists working on Two, Three and Four Octave
Scale and Arpeggios. We will study select Etudes to see bow
technique sparkle! This camp will continue with early morning
technical diligence, to include newcomers and also continue on from
the first week of camp for those registered for both weeks (results
are amazing!)
Camp F: $400 Ages 08 - 17
Daily 9:00 am - 5:00 pm July 14: Recital 4:00 pm
This camp is designed for intermediate to advanced players
wishing to get a head start on the upcoming year’s technique and
repertoire. Morag will meet with each student to design and help
implement their plan. Each day student’s will work on scales and
arpeggios with rhythm and bow games, attend an unaccompanied Bach
class which includes focused memory work, as well as mini-lessons
which end in a solo repertoire masterclass. There will also be
improvisatory opportunities and creative work on extended
techniques. Each day ends with small and large ensemble chamber
music. There will be opportunities for gentle stretching and mind
focusing exercises, nature walks, and our famous community meals!
This is an excellent camp to begin work on new repertoire for the
2017/18 year.
Camp G: $200 Ages 18 and above/Adult Daily 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm
July 14: Recital 8:30 pm
You will Love this after dinner camp which dishes out lots of
delicious chamber music, learning and laughs. Over the week adult
cellists learn chamber pieces under Morag Northey’s instruction.
Many adults have continued with the second week of camp after
experiencing the first so I create a very different week two
program. I aim to elevate your playing technique basics such as
rhythm, intonation, tone clarity, articulation, and expressive
elements such as vibrato speed and width, dynamics, style, timbre
and phrasing. Breaks are extra lovely as we share potluck snacks,
drinks and conversation ~ this camp is a true table of treats.

Age and groups can flex depending on individual
and group needs and balance.
Cello Camp with Morag Northey is celebrating it’s thirteenth
year of providing magical summer string learning experiences for
cellists of all ages and stages. Musician’s abilities develop at
exciting rates in the highly motivating atmosphere that is created
by working with like-minded peers in a positive, instructional,
relaxed, fun and creative setting. Given the chance to focus and
receive constant pedagogical support, learning new, or polishing
former solo pieces, complimented by a varied range of ensemble
repertoire, is exciting! My aim is to inspire students through
healthy result-oriented learning that moves their playing forward
with ease. Friendships are built and strengthened while attending
rehearsals, masterclasses, theory sessions, daily nature
excursions, mind-focusing and stretching exercises and sharing
delicious meals prepared by families with vibrant round table
conversation and smiles! Dive in! Sing through your instrument as
you discover, express, and collaborate with your friends to move
beyond what you believed you were capable… I look forward to

LUNCH AND SNACKS Breaks are extra lovely as we share potluck
snacks, drinks and conversation ~ this camp is a true table of
treats. Participants are asked to rotate healthy meals and snacks.
A schedule will be provided a week before the camps begin.
Allergies are taken into consideration regarding our ‘family-style’
meal preparation. Morag will organize these meals in advance with
parents.
PAYMENT AND FEES All applications must be submitted by June 15th
with a non-refundable deposit of $100.00.

Morag’s first cello lesson was with Judith Fraser at the
Vancouver Academy of Music which lead to an Associate of Arts and
Pedagogy and Performance Diploma at the Victoria Conservatory of
Music and Camosun College; Toronto Professional Orchestral Training
Program, numerous Masterclasses and Residencies (Nelsova, Parisot,
Tsutsumi) at the Banff Centre, a Bachelor of Arts in Performance,
University of Texas at Austin with Phyllis Young, and a Masters in
Performance from the University of Calgary where she also studied
the Kodaly Method. Morag taught five years in the University of
Texas at Austin’s reknowned String Project and minored in Pedagogy
at the University of Calgary with Tom Rolston. Morag teaches
Masterclasses to very young thru adult students, and for over
thirty years has maintained a large multi-level private studio. She
taught at the Calgary Suzuki Talent Education Society, and is the
cello teacher of Calgary’s Mount Royal University, Early Childhood
Cello Program. Morag conducts a series of unique, multi-age,
multi-level String, Summer Camps and is the Director of the “Good
Vibrations Cello Choir” an adult ensemble of cellists who want to
positively help change the world – one good vibration at a
time!
“The emotional impact of her cello is staggering” and can be
felt through her soulful repertoire which includes the Rachmaninoff
Cello Sonata (Glasgow University ~ American String Teachers
Association): Piece en Concert by F. Couperin; Prayer by E.Bloch,
the Bloch Prayer and Lied ohne Worte, Op.109 by F. Mendelssohn
which Morag played at the “Healing the World” Brundibár and
Forbidden Music of the Holocaust” Vocal Arts Institute of Alberta,
this year.
Morag encourages others to come, listen, and “just be” in
“Together Calgary Together World” it’s third successful year of a
series that allows her to help others through her music ~ she solos
eight weekly improvised cello and vocal hour long concerts. Morag
is a composer of theatre, film, and concert music, a writer of
poetry, prose and song, and speaks to inspiring others. Her debut
album "This is the Life" with Red Venus Blue Tango, opened for the
East Village Opera Company, closed Dalai Lama's "Now" tour and was
a soloist inside the Athletes Village for the 2010 Olympic and
Paralympic Games. The CD ‘Lilies of the Field’ features Morag as
composer, arranger, cellist, singer and co-producer, was nominated
“Outstanding Inspirational Album of the Year” Gospel Music
Association of Canada’s 29th annual Covenant Awards, 2007. Morag
has played cello in orchestras, chamber music ensembles, musicals,
theatre, with celebrities, and had a six-string electric cello
built for her to extend the violin/bass range to accompany
theatrical shows; The Wizard of Oz scored specifically for cello
and piano (ATP) and Next to Normal and Crazy for You for Theatre
Calgary. A distinguished virtuoso, her playing enraptures our mind
with an artistry that brings blissful pleasures to the soul.

During the children’s day camps, possible risks would be those
typical of gentle to moderate stretching, walking, run-ning, or
