 EDITORS CORNER:

Hey everyone, I can't believe how fast the months are passing. It's February already. and we're only four months away from the Spring Round-up. The plans are moving along, thanks to our event coordinator, Dave Haberkorn. It looks like our new venue at Mariner High School will prove to be a real winner. There will be room for plenty of show cars, along with a huge swap meet, and lots of spectator parking too. The only thing missing is you. We still need plenty of volunteers, so sign up at the general meeting on February 24th, or contact any staff member, and show your support for your club.

FEATURE CAR: Submitted by Ken Johnson

After driving many 4 bangers, 6 cylinder and 318 Chrysler products, one day I decided it was time for a real toy. I found a 68 Charger on the back row of a local used car lot and brought it home. It had faded red paint, black interior with moldy, smelly carpet. The 383 was covered with oil and dirt, but it was an original 383 car. I replaced the battery, did some carb work, added a new coil, put in some fresh gas, and to my surprise it started and ran well. It was a very strong 383, and it sounded great ---- I was hooked.

That summer my son, then 26, and I were searching for a car for him, when we stumbled upon a "plain Jane" 69 Coronet 318, with most of a 440 under the hood. My son wanted a Charger not a Coronet. He got my red Charger, I got the red Coronet. After 24 months of finding R/T parts in 4 states, the car was ready to drive. A 1995 Viper red paint job, rebuilt 727 with 2800 stall, 3.55 LS. The 14's were replaced with 15" tires, and the shifter was taken off the column and put on the floor.

That was 15 years ago, and during that time I have bought and sold 6 other B-body cars. I have just as much fun driving this car as the first day, so I'll probably have it for some time. We take it on trips in the summer, I drive it on nice weekends year round, and I drove it to work a lot in the summers. The people that wave on the road, and all the people that want to look and talk wherever you stop, are the reasons that make these cars we have so much fun.

I joined the club 13 years age, and that also has been a good and fun part of owning this car. Thank you all for the 2008 club award for "Best Kept Car". I live in Arlington Heights. I retired from the fire department after 30 years, in 2007. My son still has the 68 Charger. I look forward to seeing you all at meetings, shows, and club events this year.
