VOLUME BUYING
MOOSE CREEK RED ANGUS2 - Y E A R - O L D B U L L S A L E
Welcome to the 2016 edition of the Moose Creek 2-Year-Old Bull Sale. First, I would like to thank all of the customers that showed great confidence in our program to select bulls, females and frozen genetics from us in 2015. It was due to this great support that we decided to conduct this live auction of our 2-year-old bulls.
Originally, we had planned to host a sale in February 2017, but the response over the last three years selling the 2-year-olds privately was overwhelming. The only fair way to offer all of the customers a chance at their picks is to conduct an auction. Truthfully, the open house atmosphere and nonchalant pace is something we will dearly miss.
The bulls are the strongest group that we have ever assembled. They really are developing into the offering that we have strived to produce; bulls that are extremely sound, hairy, big bodied and fed responsibly to ensure they last. We have worked to select the kind of genetics, regardless of breed, that can make it in a management system that prides the hard working and punishes the hard do-ing. The data we have supplied is actual, relevant numbers that can help you make important breeding decisions.
This sale offering has been bred, born, raised and developed on our ranch. We are a family run operation and value cattle that fit into our grass-based system. These bulls are not left overs, they weren’t too small to sell as yearlings – they were bred and developed specifically for this sale. The 2017 offering is already sorted and being managed for it.
What truly separates our outfit from our competitors is the importance of customer service. It is our main priority to get your cows or heifers settled to a quality herd bull. All we are trying to do is treat our customers the way we would like to be treated in the same situation.
We would love to host you Monday, February 8, here at the ranch in our heated sale facility. Jack and Dianne Wilson will be serving lunch from 12:00-1:00 p.m. and that is worth the trip alone.

Welcome to
All the best,
Darren Ippolito for Moose Creek Red Angus
We will continue to develop your newly purchased herd sire(s) for you at no cost. The only thing we ask is that you insure your purchase for the duration that he is being developed. The bulls staying until spring will be semen checked and delivered to you in April/May, or as loads develop for your area. For anyone wanting to develop their own bulls, a rebate of $250 per bull will be subtracted from the purchase price. This applies to any bulls taken sale day or delivered within seven days of the sale.
All of the bulls in the sale have been vet inspected, palpated and scrotal mea-sured prior to going to grass in the spring and again prior to the sale. None of the bulls selling have been semen checked. Most veterinarians agree that semen checking is only valid for up to 30 days post testing. Any of the bulls selling are fully guaranteed; if they happen to be incapable of settling cows, a replacement bull will be supplied until a suitable bull is available. Credit for the incapable bull may be used at any Moose Creek sale on any breed of bull. At no point shall the compensation be greater than the purchase price.

There’s no reason to look back when you have so much to look forward to.
Pine Chief was brought in to add some calving ease and do-ability to the winter calvers. He came from Boyd Lines’ outfit that is a low maintenance, easy doing cowherd. Truthfully, Boyd called me and told me I should buy this bull cause, “I’d be stupid not to.” I’m glad I took his advice.

Designer is a very versatile herd sire for us. He breeds in the winter and spring herds producing cherry red, high performance progeny. Designer daughters continue to impress with their mod-erate frame size and stout, heavy calves they wean each fall. He will lower birth weights and add do-ability to his calves.
The high performance, big time power bull in our battery. If you are serious about selling calves in the fall, or feeding out some great converting stockers, look to Sriracha. His growth numbers stack up with any bull of any breed we use. More importantly, Sriracha’s donor dam is still one of the greatest cows we’ve ever raised.

We added Rambler from the historic Geis dispersal to infuse some calving ease, low birth weights and excellent dispositions. We are glad we successfully outbid multiple purebred opera-tions to acquire him. We just wish he hadn’t got injured part way through his first season. His sons are 5-star heifer bulls.

Red Angus
Our Red Angus program is one of the oldest and most respected in Canada. We have lead by example, breed-ing and selecting a sound, fertile, efficient cowherd mat-ed to top notch herd sires. We have wasted no resources in selecting genetics that will thrive in low management systems, where extended feeding and grazing strategies are utilized. Most importantly, we place our nearly six decades of Red Angus breeding reputation on the line every time we offer a herd sire for sale.

This is a video sale. No bulls will physically enter the sale barn. A video of each bull will be playing at the time of sale. Viewing of the bulls can take place anytime prior to sale day. Give yourself time sale morning to evaluate the offering prior to the sale time. The experience of choosing your bull in the ring changes drastically at a video sale.

Red SimmAngusIn 2010, we purchased the Bar M cowherd from Manitoba. They were responsible for the successful“Tried and True Red Angus Bull Sale”. As these cows were sold without registrations, we felt that the breeding strength was too great to overlook. We mated the entire group to full Fleckvieh herd sires and started to market both their heifers and bulls. These true F1 offspring have been very popular, and for good reason, as you will see in our offeringof Red SimmAngus Bulls. Recently, were fortunate to purchase the heart of the Twin Creek’s herdfrom northern Manitoba. The base of our Red SimmAngus program is from these two herds. To develop superior Red SimmAngus stock, we knew we needed to start with an elite base. Thefoundation for our Red SimmAngus offering is as strong as any in the nation.

This red blaze face herd sire anchors our Simmental bull battery. He is super sound, tremendous footed with an unbelievable dispo-sition. His sons have been the first to go each spring when we sold privately and his daughters are equally as impressive. He adds lots of performance without adding additional frame size.

This hairy fullblood son of the immortal Houston has been an-other cornerstone bull in our hybRED program. He is the most maternal sire we run and his milk proof confirms that. Extra stout, very moderate and big barrelled, Houston is an easy bull to look at year round.

Relic was one of the stoutest, hairiest herd sires to sell in the spring of 2012. He exhibited tons of muscle expression, huge base width and large testicles. This is the last set of sons available.
ReferenceFor a decade now, we have been developing and breeding Charo-lais genetics. Our herd has grown from one cow to nearly 70 cows and back to 20 breeding females. The expansion and culling was in order to select the type of Charolais that will flourish in the systems that we and our clientele use. Cattle that are easy calving, vigorous at birth and maternal, while still not losing focus on the superior traits that Charolais possess: performance based, stout, hairy, big pay-weight stock. We have not worked to downsize the white cows, however we have been successful at making them easier fleshing, lower maintenance and harder working.

All of the bulls in the sale have been developed together since birth. We do not use co-operator herds or have guest consignors. The bulls are vaccinated at birth, branding and weaning. Our cowherd is one of only a select few PI BVD free herds in Canada. We gained this status in 2004 and have kept it since.
The bulls are weaned and developed on a growing ration consisting of silage, hay, supplement and corn to meet energy requirements. They are fed moderately to gain 2.5 lbs/day and given plenty of exercise. After being vet inspected in the spring, the entire sale offering was sent to pasture April 5 and stayed out grazing until October 19. We brought them back to the yard, started them on a corn silage, hay, supplement and corn grain ration. They have been fed and managed as one group, with plenty of running room in the adjacent paddock.
We are confident that the offering is sound and developed with their longevity and long term soundness in mind.
BULLDEVELOPMENTBUILT FOR THE LONG HAUL
PERFORMANCEDATAAll of the performance data supplied are actuals with no adjustments. Our weaning weights are based on pay weight in the fall, just the same as you sell your calves. We have supplied actual yearling weights and off-grass weights as well. It is important to us to provide you with these numbers, un-manipulated, as you can determine the emphasis you put on each one.
Our birth weights are recorded as close to 24 hours post calving as possible and again, they are not adjusted to factor age of dam, days on feed or cow size. We do not post calving ease scores on the bulls selling because they are all born unassisted or they are culled. Same goes for a disposition score.
The sale offering has been handled numerous times, and each time on foot. Any uncooperative bulls are culled. The final test prior to selling is each bull being separated and singly pictured and videoed with 2-3 people in the pen with them. All of the flighty, high-headed bulls are long gone. This is still a family run industry and no one has time for wild cattle.

TT cattle have a much higher chance of AAA, or in the USA system “choice”.(DNA Studies Genes Affecting Meat Quality in Beef Cattle. Department of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Saskatchewan.Available at: http://homepage.usask.ca/~schmutz/leptin.html)
Milk Production:Prior research indicates that a SNP at position 305 of exon 2 in the leptin gene affects milk production in dairy cows. Dairy cows with at least one copy of the T allele have been shown to have higher milk production than CC cows. If that effect carries over to beef breeds, it is reasonable to expect that CT and TT beef cows will wean heavier calves than CC beef cows. We tested this hypothesis for a herd of mixed breed cows using anova.
Results indicated that both crossbred CT and TT beef cows wean significantly heavier beef calves than CC crossbred beef cows. (Anim Genet. 2008 Jun;39(3):284-6. doi: 10.1111/j. The impact of a leptin gene SNP on beef calf weaning weights. DeVuyst EA, Bauer ML, Cheng FC, Mitchell J, Larson D.)
The Effect of Leptin on Lactating Beef Cows and Calf Weaning Weights:

NEW DNA TEST COULD PROVIDE KEY TO PROFIT “Testing for the leptin gene in livestock is a new cutting edge proposition associated with DNA gene markers. The IGENITY-L™ test, provided by Merial, allows producers to utilize yet another tool in beef production to improve carcass merit. “Leptin is a protein produced in white fat tissue and the more leptin produced, the stronger the signal is sent to the brain to reduce appetite,” Tate says. “The leptin protein is directly related to appetite, energy utilization and fat deposition.” (Clifford, 2005).
RFI (Residual Feed Intake) testing. “An efficient bull will pass on superior genetics for feed efficiency to his progeny, which will be realized as feed savings for calves in the feedlot and for replacement heifers entering the cowherd.” (From: http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex10861).
The Effect of Leptin on Average Daily Gain and Feed Efficiency:The particular gene being examined produces leptin, which is associated with appetite. Cattle with the fully mutated form of leptin (genotype TT) put on weight faster than those with the slightly mutated form (genotype CT) which put on weight faster than those with the non mutated form of leptin (genotype CC). (From: http://www.innovationplace.com/thescene/news/56.html)• Leptin positive animals finish for slaughter approximately
37 days faster and had an ADG of 3.323 compared with non-positive animals that had an ADG of 2.937.
• Leptin positive animals also exhibit a greater feed efficiency (6.4) compared to non-positive animals (8.2). (Quantum Management Protocol)
Yield Grade:Although the results vary in terms of the proportion that grade AAA or higher, the trend has always been the same:
