Welcome to our spring bull sale. We thank you for your interest and taking the time to read through our sale book.
It has been well documented about the beef shortage in North America and the prices this fall and early winter have sup-ported that. The optimism in the beef industry is exceptionally contagious and for those of you who “tighten up your cinch” and rode through the down time, these prices are for you. It is very important to remember the lessons that the last few years have taught us. Have a plan, be assertive and diligent with your plan and reap the rewards. Efficient, hardworking, trouble free cattle got us though the down periods; they will most certainly be our best allies.
We worked through the wettest spring and June/July on record in the area. We were very fortunate to save a great deal of the yard and the houses during the flooding but lost a significant amount of feed in the feedyard. The wet, lush grass and im-proper grazing rotation of the summer range resulted in some of our lightest weaned calves in a great while. They came home green but with the open fall and beautiful winter have caught up quickly.
With the lack of silage, we went to a cut hay-wet DDG-grain screening pellets ration. We were very excited to see that the bulls were gaining and converting at a rate that we never achieved with silage in the ration. The cause of this I feel is two fold – one is the exceptional winter and the other is the merciless culling and genetic make up of the offering.
This year the sale will be held in our newly constructed, heated sale barn. Please accept this as your formal invitation to come and “break in” the new digs. As always, the post sale party features fun, fellowship and our famous steak fry. It’s the kind of bull sale meal that you only get once a year.
Glenn, Donna, Candace & Darren p.s. Please join us to help celebrate our 40th year in the Red Angus business. As our marketing slogan goes “Life begins at 40!”
CONDITIONS & GUARANTEES: All en-tries sell with a responsible breeder’s guarantee of satisfaction. In the unlikely event of any dispute whatever, regular TERMS & CONDITIONS shall apply in accordance with the Canadian Angus Association Code of Ethics.ALL CATTLE ARE SOLD subject to tests as required for export under Regulations of the Health of Animals Branch, Department of Agriculture for Canada. Export health chart and brokerage charges are the responsibility of the purchaser.TERMS OF PAYMENT: Cash or cheque pay-able to the Clerk of Sale on Sale Day. U.S. Funds will be accepted at the current Rate of Exchange on sale day.
INSURANCE: Ownership risk to Purchaser commences when Auctioneer’s hammer falls. Full Mortality Insurance is available sale day. Cattle returning to Moose Creek Red Angus after the sale must be insured.HOLDING & SHIPPING: Approximately one week is required for export transfers and other documents to be processed. Export animals will be held at the Sale location at no charge and under excellent care. Joint export shipping ar-rangements to obtain minimal shipping cost will gladly be made if instructions to that effect are provided to Clerk of Sale at time of settlements. TRUCKING: Free trucking will be available to the Prairie Provinces at the purchaser’s conve-nience before May 1, 2012. Delivery after May 1, 2012 will be at a mutually agreed upon time for
both parties. Most deliveries will be to your yard but some may be to central locations due to load size and time. If the truck is headed past your yard, expect your bull to be on the load. Anyone taking advantage of the free trucking must insure their bulls. No exceptions.HAUL YOUR OWN: Bring your trailer sale day and receive a $100 discount per bull. OWNERS: Reserve the right to withhold from export shipment animals for whom Buyer or Buyer’s agent have not made arrangements for payment in full, or other satisfactory arrange-ments, prior to time of export departure.ALL PERSONS who attend the Sale do so at their own risk, and the Owners and Sale Staff as-sume no liability, legal or otherwise, for property loss or for any accidents that may occur.
A large thank you goes out to the hundreds of cattlemen and women that we have supplied bulls to in our 40 year history. It has been an honour to call so many of you friends and to have your loyal support. Many
have been with us for over 25 years while spanning three different generations of bull buyers.
We are certainly blessed to have supporters like you.

When you select your herd bull there is plenty of thought that goes into it; the breed, the performance, conformation, type and price. But to me one thing that I always consider is the breeder’s program. So ask yourself: What are their goals? Are they similar to ours? Do they run their operation like mine?
Associating yourself with a like-minded program is very important, so that the cattle they raise fit your management type and system. The transition to your program will be more effortless and definitely more successful. When you purchase a bull, you are actually partnering with a program. Make sure the program is disciplined, with like goals and their success should also be yours.
I seem to always be talking about birth weights. Either about how big they are, how small they are or even if it’s practical to worry about them. Some mild winters, such as this one, will affect the birth weight causing it to be lighter. Other winters, like last year, will do the opposite. We noticed that the later calving cows all had larger BW calves than the early calvers. After doing some research on our own program, we found that the birth weights increase significantly during the second cycle of our calving season. Over the last 10 years we have seen our BW increase as much as 11% during the last 2 weeks of calving. Dr. Bart Lardner, head of WBDC in Lanigan, feels that the increased nutritional value of the feed fed to pre-calving cows and limited exercise they get adds a great deal to the birth weight. Cows that calve at the beginning of the season are usually kept in smaller areas for less time than those that calve at the end of the season.
a word
A P R I L 1 6 , 2 0 1 2 • K I S B E Y, S K
We have always tried to keep the performance data simple. Give a cattleman his weight and his age and he’ll tell you whether or not the bull has got perfor-mance. Our birth weights are recorded as close to birth as possible. Our weaning weights are actuals, not adjusted. This calf crop never saw a lick of creep feed and some of the worst water logged grass we have ever had. The bulls were weaned at roughly 7 months (210 days) of age and went on to a pellet and free choice hay ration. We changed our ration from last year by eliminating the use of silage and barley. With the tremendous weather the need for maintenance energy was less. The sale group ate no rolled grain, only grain refuse. The bulls were again weighed at 12 months for their actual yearling weight. All of the bulls carry EPD’s, we just choose not to publish them. They are, however, available to any-one who is interested in them. We find a lot of important traits are not measured by EPD’s. These are the traits such as udder quality, hair, ease of fleshing and disposition that make your herd profitable. We do not carcass test our cattle live. With a maternal breed and the moderate way that we develop the bulls, we feel carcass testing will not give us conclusive evidence to make decisions with. However, we do have hundreds of returns on Moose Creek sired cattle taken to slaughter, many of which would be mates to the bulls in the sale. We have found that feed efficiency and do-ability are as important financially as ribeye area and IMF are.
performance data
This year you’ll notice we haven’t included as many pictures of the bulls as past sales. Instead, we pictured a few bulls from each sire group. All of the sale bulls will be videoed and the videos will be placed on our website. The video will be done and uploaded to moosecreekredangus.com by mid-March. A DVD of the sale bulls will also be available by request.

Olympian
Gold Quest
Unbelievable
Olympian1234015
Olympian’s newest photo says it all. He is athletic and powerful. This is the last offering of sons by
Olympian as he now resides at the exceptional herd of John Orr. With that, his influence has never been
stronger and more important. Almost every bull in the front end of the offering is mothered by an
Olympian daughter. Look for Olympian to add do ability, milk and structure soundness.
Gold Quest1360146
Gold Quest has done everything that we wanted. Easy calving, muscled up and very sound. Gold Quest sons were the lead off group in last year’s sale and this sire group will not disappoint either. Owned jointly with Tony & Cindy Brock, great long time customers
Unbelievable1450930
We only own a semen interest in “UB” so we will never have a large number of calves but with the quality of the ones in the sale you will continue to see them for a long
time. He offers muscle, character and eye appeal. We think that the future is quite bright for UB.

Jumbo
U63
Jumbo 1367178
“I have to have a Jumbo son.” This is the most common statement we have been hearing since his first offering at last year’s sale. The sons and now producing daughters are making his legacy and it is exciting. If you are in the beef business, Jumbo needs to be your first choice. He offers more muscle, mass and volume than any other bull in the industry. He is unique.
U63 1467061
Moderate, mellow and docile. U63 has the cow power and performance to back up his impressive phenotype.
Storm
Storm 1338897
Calving ease, maternal power and a super big hip. He was the high seller at the Shoderee sale,
a no nonsense cowboy driven program. His milking daughters are easy fleshing and hard
working. A great combination.
