As was the case a year ago, a sputtering economy, fueled by corporate misdeeds, looms a threat to buyer confidence, but Keeneland Director of Sales Geoff Russell is trying to view the glass as half full. “We naturally have to be concerned about the situation with the stock market, but we tend to look on the positive side of things,” he commented. “Maybe people are discovering that they can invest in horses in- stead.” Despite Tough Times, Sale Continues To Prosper... The general economic decline has been well docu- mented, yet in many ways, the July Sale has weath- ered the storm quite well. In 2000, Keeneland reported sales on a total of 130 horses for $80,732,000 and an average of $621,015, marking the sixth consecutive year of increases in both statistics. Due in large part to a catalog which featured just 164 yearlings, the streak was partially snapped last July when the gross reached “just” $63,212,000. However, only 89 lots were re- ported as sold during two sessions, resulting in an average of $710,247, a 14.4-percent increase over the three-session sale in 2000. A more important barome- ter, according to Russell, is the performance of the middle market. Last year’s median of $430,000 repre- sented a 7.5-percent hike versus 2000. “We really don’t like to focus on the average,” he explained. “We’re more concerned with the median, which we would certainly like to see grow. Sometimes it’s hard to recruit buyers when they see that the average for a sale is so much higher than the median.” Cont. p2-3 MOONRAKER In one of the biggest shocks of the season, the 33-1 longshot Margarula (Ire) (Doyoun {Ire}) cut down 4-5 favourite Quarter Moon (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) in the closing stages of the G1 Darley Irish Oaks to win by a length and provide connections with a fairytale success at The Curragh Sunday after- noon. “I said before- hand that I had been training for 25 years and could do with a pleasant surprise at this stage,” said winning trainer Jim Bolger. “Margarula has given it to me today after getting a peach of a ride from Kevin [Manning], who saved every inch of ground along the inner.” Irish Oaks cont. p4 Sunday, Curragh, Ireland DARLEY IRISH OAKS-G1, i369,390, Curragh, 7-14, 3yo, f, 1 1/2mT, 2:37.40, sf. 1--#@sMARGARULA (IRE), 126, f, 3, by Doyoun (Ire) 1st Dam: Mild Intrigue, by Sir Ivor 2nd Dam: Mild Deception, by Buckpasser 3rd Dam: Natashka, by Dedicate (Ir£33,000 yrl ‘00 GOFORB). Sire Firepower... The typically strong menu of world-class stallionsincludes perennial leading sire Storm Cat, whose fiveyearlings a year ago sold for an aggregate of $8.85million, headlined by his $3-million filly out of IncaLagacy, a full sister to GISW Catinca. The OverbrookFarm stallion is represented by six yearlings, includinghip number 105, set to sell early during tomorrow’sfinal session. The chestnut filly, consigned by Davidand Ginger Mullins (Doninga), agent, is out of AmeliaBearhart (Bold Hour), making her a half sister to 1997champion grass horse Chief Bearhart, GISW ExplosiveRed and Ruby Ransom, the dam of MGSW Strut theStage. Deputy Minister leads all sires with 15 cata-loged, while other prominent stallions include A.P. Indy(6), Danzig (5), Gone West (10), Kingmambo (11), SaintBallado (3), Seeking the Gold (6), Thunder Gulch (2),Unbridled (7) and Unbridled’s Song (4). A pair of Ken-tucky Derby winners and two promising sons of StormCat head up a list of eight freshman sires with their firstcrop of yearlings. Tayor Made’s Forestry (Storm Cat,seven cataloged) and Exploit (Storm Cat, six) are joinedby Three Chimneys’ Silver Charm (Silver Buck, one),winner of the 1997 Run for the Roses; and Lane’sEnd’s 1999 Derby hero Charismatic (Summer Squall, two). Old Trieste (A.P. Indy, six), champion sprinterArtax (Marquetry, one), Horse Chestnut (SAf) (FortWood, one), and 1998 Belmont S. winner Victory Gal-lop (Cryptoclearance, one) complete a formidable groupof newcomers. “We have a strong catalogue that ap-peals to both foreign and domestic buyers,” Russellcommented. the quality of the horses when our veteri-narians checked them out earlier this year and everyoneseems happy that the horses have progressed nicely.”

New Kids On The Block... Several new consignors appear on the July scene forthe first time this year. Comprised of Central Kentuckyhorsemen Kerry Cauthen, Walmac’s John T.L. JonesJr., bloodstock agent Dan Kenny and Glencrest Farm’sDavid Greathouse, Four Star Sales, founded this pastMarch, consigns five head to the sale. “The responsethat we have gotten has been extremely positive,”Cauthen, who is the managing partner of the agency, commented. “We’ve all been around for a while and weenjoy our working partnership.” Four Star Sales willexpand in the near future. Cauthen estimates that hisgroup will consign about 170 horses to the SeptemberSale and somewhere between 225 and 250 to theKeeneland November Sale. Another new name in theKeeneland July catalogue is Paramount Sales, a partner-ship involving Taylor Made Sales Agency, Gaines-Gen-try Thoroughbreds, Castleton Lyons farm and PatCostello of Drumkenny Farm. Explaining how Para-mount came to be, Mark Taylor of Taylor Made said,“With our name recognition, new people were comingto us, looking to get into the business, and we wereseeking a new outlet to keep people under the TaylorMade umbrella while still spending the lion’s share ofour time focusing on our existing customers. We cre-ated a really interesting mix of people, something thathad not been done before in the horse industry.” Para-mount debuted at the Keeneland October Sale and wasan immediate success, ending the auction as the lead-ing consignor by gross sales and selling the saletopper,a $400,000 Pleasant Colony colt. “When people seethe quality that Paramount will be represented with atKeeneland July and Fasig-Tipton July, I think they willbe impressed,” Taylor said. “They have seven atKeeneland and 15 at Fasig-Tipton, and they have stun-ning individuals in both catalogues.” Also making theirKeeneland July debut is Chris Hodges and his wifeMindy Powell-Hodges, who consign under the banner ofHodgewell Farm. The Florida-based operation was ac-tive at last year’s November Sale, acquiring five wean-lings for a combined $614,000. Each of the five lots iswheeled back this week, the most expensive of whichis a Saint Ballado--Smokey Mirage filly (hip 184), whichwas purchased for $235,000. Also included in theconsignment is a Gulch filly purchased in January.“We’re pleased that we have some new clients partici-pating in the July Sale for the first time,” GeoffreyRussell commented. The July Sale is an important ba-rometer for the whole industry and people want to bepart of it. The success of the July Sale has made itobvious that it’s a sale they need to participate in.”

The Return of Some Old Friends... Keeneland also welcomes the return to the mid-sum-mer sale of William S. Farish’s Lane’s End Farm. TheVersailles, Kentucky- based nursery had focused itsattention on the September Sale over the last twoyears, where they were the top consignor, with nearly$85 million in combined sales. “We are very much stillgoing to be a part of this year’s September Sale, butwe felt that some of the horses in our yearling crop fitvery well into this sale so we decided to enter them,”said Bill Farish of Lane’s End, who estimates that theywill consign about 100 head in the first two books ofthe September Sale. Other major Central Kentuckystuds with consignments include the Hancock family’sClaiborne Farm, Calumet Farm, Arthur B. Hancock III’sStone Farm and Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Farm, which makes its July debut after consigning horses tothe 2002 January Sale.

Taylor Made 2002... This year, Taylor Made will offer 30 lots. One towatch, said Mark Taylor, is Hip 186. “There are not alot of Storm Cats on the market this year and thatmakes our Storm Cat colt out of Tacha (Mr. Prospector)obviously one in the spotlight,” he said. “Past him, wehave a slew of horses who are really good physicalsand have pedigrees that make people think about win-ning the best races in the world. We also have a lot ofyoung sires represented, including two of our own first-crop stallions, Exploit and Forestry. I think when peoplecome in and see them, they are going to be blownaway.” Taylor Made will also sell Hip 180, an Unbri-dled’s Song colt that was purchased by Aaron andMarie Jones for $1.1 million at the Keeneland JanuarySale. “He is a carbon copy of his sire,” Taylor said. “Hewas purchased in January, and not necessarily as apinhook. But Mr. Jones had a change in plans and nownearly every yearling he owns will be sold. He soldthree horses at Keeneland July last year that grossedalmost $7.5 million, and that allows him to diversifyand do other things, maybe buy a made race horse. Also, Unbridled’s Song had a great spring, with one ofthe best three-year-olds in the country [Buddha], and hehad a Breeders’ Cup winner last year in UnbridledElaine, so there have been some things over the pastseveral months that have had a positive effect on thishorse’s value.”

A Positive Spin on the Market... The stock market dropped precipitously last week, reaching lows not seen since 1997. But some believethat could actually be a positive sign for the Thorough-bred market. Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales Agencyis one of them. “I think the risk levels of the two, thestock market and the Thoroughbred market, have flip-flopped,” he said, echoing the thoughts of Geoff Rus-sell. “People have no confidence in what’s going on inthe stock market, but they have a lot of confidence inthe people they have been dealing with in the Thor-oughbred market. The horse business had been per-ceived as more high risk, but with the stock market inthe state it’s in, that’s not the case any more.” Headded, “In our game, you want to believe, as WayneLukas has always said, that yearling sales are inflation-proof on the top end. It’s more about people being inlove with the horse business and wanting to play at thetop level, and they want to play at that level regardlessof the ebbs and flows of the economy. We are cau-tiously optimistic that we will have a very good sale.We have a great collection of horses...hopefully we willhave as good a sale as last year, which was incredible.”Taylor Made was the leading consignor by gross lastyear, selling 17 yearlings for a total of $15,130,000.They had four sell for seven figures, including the sales-topping $4-million Saint Ballado colt.

THE INDUSTRY AT WORK: LEGISLATIONUnder new tax laws, depreciation for horses purchased and placed into service before theyare 24 months old has more than tripled for the first year and nearly doubled for the second. The new schedule for the first 2 years appears below. Gold Cup Winner from the Golden State Foaled inTemecula, Sky Jack is the 12th California-bred to winthe Hollywood Gold Cup. It’s been a long, strange tripfor the six-year-old, according to trainer Doug O’Neill.“He’s actually had two knee surgeries on the same[right] knee, a chip taken out each time,” he said. “Andthen during the recovery time of the second [surgery]he actually had a bout of colic twice. MARGARULA OVER THE MOON Margarula (Ire)(Doyoun {Ire}) had provided no clues so far this yearthat she was capable of besting such as Quarter Moon(Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), finishing fifth in the Listed VictorMcCalmont Memorial S. at Gowran Park June 6 andfourth in the G2 Hunston Financial Pretty Polly S. overthis course June 29 in her two tries at stakes level.Previously she had won a competitive handicap atLeopardstown May 12 in her only other race at thisdistance. Nevertheless, the ease with which she trav-eled in last place throughout the early stages and theconfidence with which Kevin Manning rode her fromthere belied her starting odds. Aided by the sterlingwork carried out up front by Quarter Moon’s stablecompanions Kournakova (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) andStarbourne (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells), she made smoothprogress on the inner at the top of the straight as mostof her rivals struggled to get on terms. As MichaelKinane switched the favourite for her run, which tookher to the head of affairs approaching the quarter-milemarker, Margarula found herself running into a pocketas Starbourne and Kournakova tired. Extricated fromthat squeeze by Manning, she quickened to collar thefavourite at the furlong pole and, despite that filly’srallying efforts, was always in control from there, as-serting to win a shade comfortably. Last successful inthis event with Give Thanks (GB) in 1983, her trainerJim Bolger pulled off a surprise here equivalent to thatof Jet Ski Lady, whom he trained to win the 1991Epsom Oaks at odds of 50-1. “We were hopeful thatshe would run into a place,” Bolger said. “She ran wellhere when fourth in the Pretty Polly S. and we knewthe extra two furlongs here today would be a big help.” Margarula will now head to the G1 Yorkshire Oaks atYork Aug. 21.

Although he had yet to scoregoing into the Listed Hampton Court S. at Royal AscotJune 20, he came through in style to break his maiden. He reversed Newbury form at the Royal meeting to beatIzdiham (Ire), who has subsequently taken the ListedGala S. at Sandown July 5; and Common World,runner-up in Saturday’s G2 Goffs International S. at TheCurragh. Here he traveled easily in second early underRichard Quinn as Kaieteur went to the front in an at-tempt to stretch his rivals. Those tactics looked soundin the straight as most of the field were at work tomake inroads, but Quinn was stoking his mount for achallenge and he responded with a strong effort. Thattook him past the long-time leader with 300 yardsremaining and he was pushed out to assert from there, always holding the rallying runner-up in the drive to theline. “He has been getting better with each race--he’svery genuine and he just takes a while to warm up ashe probably gets a mile and a half really,” said Quinn.“The trainer [Henry Cecil] specifically came to this raceto keep him to three-year-old company, but the horsehe beat at Ascot [Izdiham] took on his elders at San-down and beat them, so his form is very very good.”Aramram (Danzig), whose only previous start in Francecame when unseating Steve Drowne during the G1 PrixJean Prat at Chantilly June 2, repeated that trick at thetop of the straight this time. The G1 St. James’s PalaceS. third swerved badly from the gates and pulled hardin behind before dumping Drowne.

LANDSEER TO DEAUVILLE Landseer (GB)(Danehill {USA}) will be aimed at the G1 Prix Mauricede Gheest at Deauville Aug. 11, trainer Aidan O’Brienannounced yesterday. Having dropped back in trip tosix furlongs for Thursday’s G1 Darley July Cup atNewmarket, the colt was a staying-on fourth behindContinent (GB). “Landseer came out of the July Cupwell and we’ll be looking at the Prix Maurice de Gheestin Deauville,” O’Brien said. “It was hard for him comingback from a mile to six furlongs at Newmarket and thesix and a half at Deauville hopefully will suit him.”Meanwhile, Sholokhov (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells {USA}),runner-up to High Chaparral (Ire) in the G1 Irish Derbyat The Curragh June 30 and to Hawk Wing (USA) in theG1 Eclipse S. at Sandown July 6, will be prepared forthe G1 Juddmonte International S. at York Aug. 20.Although the colt was expected to fill his stable com-panions’ absence in the G1 King George VI and QueenElizabeth Diamond S. at Ascot July 31, O’Brien is infavour of giving him time to recover from his recentexertions. “It is looking like Sholokhov will be going tothe Juddmonte at York rather than the King George, which may come a bit quick for him,” O’Brien said.“He’s had two races on easy ground in a week andgoing to York gives us a chance to give him a littlebreak now.”
