Mood, Tone, and Sandra Cisneros
Diction
the choice and use of words in writing or speech
*When you are talking to your friends, your diction may be informal, because you use common language and slang to communicate effectively. When you are interviewing for a job it is more likely that you will be formal and use a different type of diction.
*Example: My interview process here at Ashley

the overall feeling or emotion conveyed to the reader in a work of literature.
*When trying to figure out the mood, it is important that you pay close attention to elements such as: SETTING, VOICE, DICTION, TONE and THEME.
Hyperbole
a deliberate exaggeration used for effect.
• It was so cold, I saw polar bears wearing jackets• “she is so dumb, she thinks Taco Bell is a Mexican phone
company”• I am so hungry I could eat a horse.• I have a million things to do.
Come up with an example of a common hyperbole that you use.
Nostalgia
A bittersweet longing for things, persons, or situations of the past.
“When I was a kid, candy bars only cost a nickel, and they were way bigger than they are now.”
*Please come up with a nostalgic phrase that you have heard either your parents or grandparent use.
Despondent
downcast or disheartened; lacking hope or courage; dejected.
*Please describe an instance in which you or somebody you knew was despondent…
