About the ConferenceAbout the Conference
Community Psychology deals with the relationships of the
individual to communities and the wider society. Community
Psychologists seek to understand the quality of life of individuals,
communities, and society. Their aim is to promote good life through
collaborative research and action. Community Psychology is guided
by its core values of individual and family wellness, sense of
community, respect for human diversity, social justice, citizen
participation, collaboration and Community strengths and empirical
grounding.
Community Psychology makes use of various perspectives
within and outside of Psychology to address issues of communities,
the relationships within them, and people's attitude about them.
Through collaborative research and action, Community
Psychologist (practitioners and researchers) seeks to understand
and to enhance quality of life for individuals, communities, and
society. Community Psychology grew out of the Community mental
health movement, but evolved dramatically as early practitioners
incorporated their understandings of political structures and other
Community contexts into perspectives on client services.
Community Psychology concerns the multiple relationships among
individuals, communities and societies. An individual lives within
many communities, at multiple levels : family, network of friends,
workplace, school, neighborhood and wider locality even cultures.
The individual must be understood in terms of these relationships
not in isolation. This means that Community Psychology is actually
interdisciplinary, drawing on the concepts and method of many other
disciplines, including Public Health, Community Development,
Human Development, Anthropology, Sociology, Social work,
Geography and other fields. Community Psychology's focus is not
on the individual or on the Community alone, but on their linkages.
Community Psychology is also committed in developing valid
psychological knowledge that is useful in Community life. In the
Community Psychology perspective, knowledge is constructed
through action. Thus Community Psychology research is intertwined
with Community and social action. Community Psychology research
and action are rooted in the seven core values- individual and family
wellness, sense of community, respect for human diversity, social
justice, citizen participation, collaboration and Community strengths
and empirical grounding. The focal theme of the conference
encompasses the emerging directions in Community Psychology-
growing awareness of human diversity in all its form broadening
concern with social justice ; collaborative participatory research and
action in Indian perspective.
