St Peter’s Church Oadby.

The church at Oadby is dedicated to St Peter and consists of a tower without battlements (in which there are four bells); a spire, chancel, very lofty nave, and two aisles, embattled, separated from the nave by four narrow and lofty pointed arches, upon elegant and slender airy pillars, with large clerestory windows over them.

The nave, aisles and chancel are all covered with lead; but the latter is not embattled.

There is a South and North porch; and in the latter were, in 1790, two pieces of ancient sculpture, engraved, which have lately been removed from the porch, and are now laid in a corner of the church.

The font is octagon, upon a smaller octagon base, and is placed on a large kneeling step.

A North door into the chancel; on the south side of which are three stone seats, and a piscine with elegant zigzag arches, somewhat pointed.

On the south side of the south aisle are two stone seats and a piscine, with arches somewhat different from those in the chancel, but not less beautiful.

The church and chancel are floored with brick and brick quarries, and the seats in general old and open.

On the pulpit, which is old, and painted, is cut on a panel ‘W.P.R.H. 1623’. On the desk ‘T.D.MAIS. 1682’ On another panel ‘I-C-M 1698’ and various other dates since that time. On the door of the desk, ‘IA. 1723’

As described by John Nichols 1807

About the Project The recording of the monumental inscriptions inside and outside the church was undertaken as

a summer project for Jane Moelwyn-Hughes and Toni Smith in 2012. All care has been taken

to ensure accuracy of the transcription, however a visit to the church or churchyard to check

with the original inscriptions is recommended.

Words from many inscriptions were readable for reasons such as broken stones, writing worn

away through time etc., and so some blank spaces occur in the transcriptions. The aim was to

record the words exactly as they are found on the stone – so variations in spelling are a

common occurrence.

Some of the very old graves were transcribed and published in 1811 in a book called ‘The

History and Antiquities of Leicestershire’ by Nichols and this can be seen at the County Record

Office.
