I think of all the qualities
needed to be the school nurse. It
takes compassionate, patience,
sympathy, empathy,
understanding, a love for helping
people, a drawer full of crackers
and juice, an internal joy over
bandaids, a scientific background,
a desire to fill out countless bits of medical
paperwork, and keen sense of injuries and “injuries.”
All of these qualities are things that you possess and
exude with a smile, a giggle, a kind word, and so
much more.
I find it an honor to work next to Peggy. She is
so good at her job. We are very lucky to have her as
our “school nurse.” On another note, Peggy is
hilarious! She keeps us all laughing most of the
day.
I tell Peggy almost everyday that she has the best
job in Montrose. I also tell her she is the best nurse
in Montrose. She is always happy and up beat. She
truly cares about kids and her co-workers.
Peggy has a thankless job but I am very
thankful for her! Peggy really cares about kids and
it shows because they see her office as a safe place
to go when they are hurting.
Peggy, what can I say but, “It isn’t an
emergency.” On the other hand, it is nice know
you’re there when I need you.
Peggy is a friend and a laugh-a-minute. She
can repartee with the best of comics. She is steady
and reliable on the job, as evidenced by
emergencies she’s had to respond to over the years.
Just a few thank yous...
Thank you for insisting that I call my doctor
immediately when you saw my Popeye arm.
Thank you for insisting that I call back when
they told me he was on vacation.
Thank you for putting up with all the drama
after we found out that it was a staph infection.
Thank you for racing upstairs to check on
fevers and other weird stuff.
Thank you for being a true lifesaver!

Principal’s Message
Happy Holidays
The New Year will
bring a major change to the
closed campus policy at
MHS. 9th grade students
will be allowed to leave
campus for second
semester. This will be a
trial period to determine if
9th graders can handle the
responsibility. The New Year also brings a new
assessment system to our district that will see all 9th-
11th grade students participating in PARCC
assessments. These assessments include math and
language arts and will occur in March and late April.
Specific testing times and dates will be released soon.
Enjoy the Holiday season, and I look forward to all
students relaxed and safe on January 6.

On November 21, the MHS Outdoor Club was awarded The Volunteer Group of the
Year Award by the Rocky Mountain Field Institute. The Rocky Mountain Field Institute is
dedicated to the conservation and stewardship of public lands in Southern Colorado. RMFI
is committed to protecting and enhancing the ecological health of our land and water
resources by completing projects focused on watershed restoration, forest health, and
sustainable recreation areas. The award was presented at RMFI's annual Volunteer
Celebration at the Garden of the Gods Visitor Center in Colorado Springs. Accepting the

What is I.C.A.P. ? Each year counselors meet with your child to develop or update his/her Individual Career
and Academic Plan (I.C.A.P.) This plan helps students explore career options, develop
postsecondary plans, and create a 4-Year Plan of Study that matches career interests as well as
postsecondary/college goals.
This fall 9th graders have met with counselors three times in a class called PoWeR 9.
Students identified their preferred learning style and strategies for high school success, completed a career
exploration survey on Naviance, and began a 4-Year plan of study.
12th grade students completed a conference with their counselor to discuss postsecondary plans and assist in
the college application process. Next semester, 10th grade students will explore careers through a strength-
based survey on Naviance and update their postsecondary goal and 4-Year Plan of Study. 11th grade students
will participate in a new course called PoWeR 11. The course will include ACT preparation, high school success
planning, and postsecondary planning.
Schedule Information
Your child’s schedule was created based on his/her course requests during registration last spring. If there is
an error on your child’s schedule, please have him/her come to the Montrose High School Counseling Center
before school, during lunch or LEAD time, or after school. Friday, Dec. 12 is the deadline to make any changes
to 2nd semester schedules.
Seniors: Please come to the counseling office when you have been accepted to a college or awarded a
scholarship.

Several members of the Project UNIFY class and
Special Olympics Partners Club attended the 6th
annual Project UNIFY Summit in Denver,
November 22. Montrose students Kenya Evans,
Carolina Jaramillo, Austin Richardson, and Claire Buetler were asked to speak at the opening ceremonies about
the impact project UNIFY actives have made on Montrose / Olathe schools. The rest of
the day the participants attended different
sessions. The day ended playing kick ball
and Bocce ball outside. Students from
Montrose and Olathe look forward
to attending the Summit each year to
share ideas about what we are doing and
learn new ideas from other schools. Specials Olympics Colorado
has more than 100 schools involved in Project UNIFY with
Montrose being the only one on the Western slope.
