périodes musicales comme Tony Bennett. Depuis son premier tube «Because of You», sorti en 1951, jusqu’à ses récents duos avec Lady Gaga ou Norah Jones, le crooner new-yorkais a toujours su conquérir les foules. La star légendaire sera ce soir sur la scène du Miles Davis Hall avec sa fille Antonia.

Few artists have managed to cross time and musical eras like Tony Bennett. Since his first hit “Because of You,” released in 1951, all the way up to his recent duets with Lady Gaga and Norah Jones, the New York crooner has always won the heart of his audience. The 85-year-old legend will be on stage tonight with his daughter Antonia at Miles Davis Hall.

ENTEr THE MaTrIx Rien de plus naturel pour un public fervent

que de voir monter sur scène son artiste pré-féré, l’œil palpitant de peur ou d’excitation. Dans la liesse collective et le goût des belles choses, on oublie souvent qu’un concert est avant tout l’heureux aboutissement d’une longue et délicate chaîne de production. Quelque part à la fin de ce processus se trouve un maillon crucial, et de fait secteur clé du Festival : l’accueil et les loges des artistes. Du chalet de Claude Nobs aux souvenirs personnalisés, rares sont les musiciens à être repartis frustrés de la Riviera suisse. Cette année, entre Woodkid et Alabama Shakes, ils sont déjà plusieurs à avoir retardé leur départ, séduits par la dolce vita locale, les sorties pédalo et le col de Jaman. Pour rendre possible l’équation sensible de la décontraction douillette appliquée aux aléas pratiques des structures festivalières, une équipe discrète d’une vingtaine de personnes travaille d’arrache-pied pour parer au pire, et souvent au meilleur. Arrivés aux aurores, ils sont aussi les derniers à partir. Entre les deux, ils préparent les loges (fournies en boissons, fruits, et chocolats) et font le nécessaire pour répondre aux demandes particulières des artistes. Un peu d’alcool pour la plupart, et quelques excentricités : pour Prince, en 2009, il avait fallu faire venir de Genève une machine à pop-corn. Plus modeste mais pas moins mignon, Ricky Martin ne monte pas sur scène sans avoir eu son bol de Frosties. Par contre, le Festival avait refusé à l’unanimité catégorique de livrer les préservatifs XXL réclamés par le Wu Tang Clan…

Arrivée à Montreux en 1988, l’iconique Marcia Corban, responsable du secteur, chevelure de feu et rusée comme le diable, aidée par son bras droit Agnès Boutruche, a plus d’un tour dans son sac pour inventer des solutions aux demandes farfelues, mais pas si fréquentes. Dorlotés par les guides pour l’administratif et la logistique, les managers

des groupes se satisfont souvent des prestations basiques mais généreuses des backstages : salons cosy, bar des artistes, maquilleurs MAC à disposi-tion – largement de quoi vous rendre un homme heureux. Réputé ingrat pour ses horaires et son protocole strict, ce secteur n’en demeure pas moins l’occasion de faire une expérience professionnelle unique : « On travaille avec les tour managers et les techniciens son et lumière. Tout le monde se démène pour donner le meilleur de soi-même, et il en sort une énergie réelle, très intense », m’explique Sébastien, en troisième année à l’Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne. A l’exaltation du travail bien fait vient souvent s’ajouter le charme des rencontres. Chloé, l’une des assistants de Marcia, l’a vécu dimanche dernier : « Je passais dans les loges du Miles lorsque j’ai vu Quincy, assis dans son fauteuil, en train de féliciter Juliette Gréco. Nothing’s more natural for a true fan than to greet their favorite artist’s arrival on stage with a mixture of powerful emotions shining in their eyes. In those moments of collective joy, basking in all things bright and beautiful, it is easy to forget that a concert is really the final result of a long, delicate production line. Near the end of that process is a critical link in the chain, and thus a key Sector of the Festival: backstage services and artists’ dressing rooms. Considering everything from Claude Nobs’ chalet to personalized mementos, few indeed are the musicians who leave the Swiss Riviera feeling disappointed. This year several, including Woodkid and Alabama Shakes, have already postponed their departures, seduced by the local dolce vita, pedal-boat rides, and the spectacular Jaman mountain pass. In order to bring about this balancing act between cozy relaxation and the logistical vaga-ries of Festival organization, a discreet team of twenty professionals works tirelessly to ensure

the smoothest possible experience. The first to arrive at the crack of dawn, members of this team are also the last to leave. In the meantime they prepare the dressing rooms (furnished with bev-erages, fruits, and chocolates) and do whatever is needed to respond to the individual requests from the artists. Some alcohol in most cases, plus a few eccentricities: for example, bringing in a popcorn machine from Geneva for Prince in 2009. More modest (and no less cute!) Ricky Martin doesn’t go on stage before eating a bowl of Frosties. On the other hand, the Festival categorically refused to deliver the size XXL condoms requested by the Wu Tang Clan…

Marcia Corban arrived at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1988. This iconic Director of the Sector, devilishly clever and with fiery red hair to match, aided by right-hand-woman Agnès Boutruche, has quite a bag of tricks when it comes to finding solutions for the craziest requests, even if those are not really all that common. Pampered by guides for their administrative and logistical needs, band managers make do with the basic, but generous, services backstage: cozy lounges, artists’ bar, even make-up artists from MAC at their beck and call—more than enough to keep them happy. This Sector has a reputation as a thankless place to work due to the long hours and strict protocols, but it can indisputably lead to unique professional experiences: “We work with tour managers and sound and light-ing techs. Everyone does their utmost to do the best job possible, and the energy is genuine and very intense,” explained Sébastien, in his third year at the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne. In addition to the feeling of a job well done, there are frequently some heartwarming encounters. Chloé, one of Marcia’s assistants, had one last Sunday: “I was passing the dressing rooms in Miles Davis Hall when I saw Quincy in his chair complimenting Juliette Gréco. It was a magical, moving moment.”

HIGHLIGHTS

Icône des années 1980, Grace Jones débute sa carrière comme mannequin. Aidée par un physique androgyne et une personnalité avant-gardiste, elle devient vite une figure des nuits new-yorkaises. L’artiste Andy Warhol l’élève au rang d’icône de la mode. Du Studio 54 de New-York, elle démarre sa carrière de chanteuse à la fin des années 1970, avec les succès «I Need a Man» et «La vie en rose», reprise d’Edith Piaf. Son univers original mêle le reggae à des sonorités discos et touche de nombreux publics, underground et mainstream. Grace Jones fait partie des rares artistes à avoir su concilier carrière musicale et carrière cinématographique. Sans s’éloigner de l’industrie de la mode, elle a su façonner et faire durer son propre univers artistique. Après plusieurs années d’absence, elle réapparait sur la scène musicale en 2008 avec l’album Hurricane, qu’elle présente l’année suivante au Montreux Jazz Festival, où elle conquiert le public.

Vendredi 13 juillet, lors de la soirée FREAK OUT! MONTREUX « ALL NIGHT » Dance Party, Grace Jones sera la Special Guest de l’évènement visuel et musical à l’Auditorium Stravinski.

Eighties star Grace Jones started her career as a model. With her androgynous physique and avant-garde personality, she quickly became part of the nocturnal skyline of New York. Andy Warhol transformed her into a worldwide fash-ion icon. She launched her singing career from Studio 54 in the late seventies with “I Need a Man” and the Edith Piaf cover “La vie en rose.” Her unique musical universe combines Reggae with a Disco sound and has appeal across of wide spectrum of underground and mainstream audiences. Grace Jones is one of the few artists to have found a way to reconcile a music career with one in film—never abandoning the fashion industry, she has managed to keep her creative juices flowing. After a few quiet years, in 2008 she was back on the music scene with her album Hurricane, which was a hit with the audience at the Montreux Jazz Festival the following year.

On Friday July 13th, during the “FREAK OUT! MONTREUX ‘ALL NIGHT’ Dance Party”, Grace Jones will be the Special Guest of the special multimedia event at Auditorium Stravinski.

Vous attendiez-vous à gagner?Je crois que tous les trois finalistes, nous étions

déjà gagnants. J’ai entendu les prestations de chacun et j’ai pensé : ce ne sera pas facile pour moi de gagner. Je remercie le jury d’avoir pensé que j’avais très bien joué et que j’étais suffisamment douée pour gagner. Je suis sur un petit nuage ! Je vais me remettre à pleurer (rires) !

Comment vous êtes-vous sentie sur scène ?C’était un sentiment fabuleux. Le piano était

génial, il avait un super son. On pouvait vraiment se faire plaisir. Il faisait chaud, ce qui est très bien pour moi, qui ai toujours froid. Super sensation et super public !

Comment était l’ambiance entre les candidats ?Vraiment amicale. Il y a deux jours, nous étions

ici, assis à une table. C’était très sympa, nous avons simplement discuté et tout le monde était adorable ! Lucia (Vlădescu – Prix du public, ndlr) est adorable et si jolie. Elle a très bien joué ce soir.

Parlez-nous un peu de vous. D’où venez-vous ?Je m’appelle Marialy et je viens de La Havane,

à Cuba. J’ai vécu en Allemagne et maintenant, je vis en Australie. J’aime la musique, j’aime jouer du piano. C’est tout ce que je veux faire pour le restant de mes jours, c’est pour cela que je vis. C’est très important pour moi d’avoir remporté ce concours, car j’ai beaucoup travaillé pour en arriver là. C’est formidable !

Qu’allez-vous faire avec la somme que vous avez remportée ?

Je crois que je vais m’acheter des chaussures (rires) ! Non, non ! J’ai besoin de temps pour penser à tout cela, c’est trop pour le moment. Je verrai, je ne sais pas.

C’était votre première fois au Festival ?Oui, c’était la première fois que je participais

au concours. Je me suis d’ailleurs demandé si je devais vraiment me présenter. On a toujours peur de ne pas être à la hauteur. Je dois remercier mon agent, en Australie, qui m’a dit : « Tu dois y aller cette année. Tu dois le faire. » Elle a cru en moi, elle savait que j’étais douée. Merci Lyn, je t’adore !Benjamin Keller

Did you expect to win?I think we were all winners already. We

were the three finalists, we were here. I heard everybody and I thought: this is going to be really hard for me to win. I thank the jury for thinking that what I did was great and good enough to win. I’m over the moon! I’m gonna cry again (laughs)!

How did you feel on stage? It was a great feeling. The piano was amazing,

it had a great sound. You could really just enjoy it. It was warm on stage, which is really good for me because I’m always cold. Great feeling, and great audience as well!

How was the atmosphere between the can-didates?It was really friendly. Two days ago, we were sitting here at a table. It was great, we were just talking and everybody was really sweet! Lucia (Vlădescu – Public’s prize – Ed.) is so sweet, so beautiful, and she played beautifully tonight.

Tell us a bit about you, where are you from?I’m Marialy and I come from Havana, Cuba. I lived in Germany, now I live in Australia. I

love music, I love playing the piano. That’s all I want to do for the rest of my life, that’s what I live for. Winning this competition means so much to me, because I worked so hard to get here. It’s amazing.

What are you going to do with the money you won?

I think I am going to buy shoes (laughs)! No, no! I need time to think about everything, it’s just too much right now. I’ll see, I don’t know.

Was it your first time at the Festival?Yes, it was my first time in the competi-

tion, I actually thought about if I should come or not. You always have that fear you are not good enough for something. I have to thank my manager in Australia, who told me: “You have to go this year. You need to do this.” She believed in me, she believed that I’m great. So, thank you, Lyn, I love you!

CONCOURS DE PIANO L’éMOTION L’EMPORTE La pianiste cubaine Marialy Pacheco a remporté

mardi après-midi la finale de la Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition 2012 au Montreux Palace. Dans un Petit Théâtre comble, elle s’est imposée devant l’Ukrainien Alex Pryrodny et la Roumaine Cezara-Lucia Vlădescu. Cette dernière s’est vue décerner le Prix du Public. Chaque prétendant devait exécuter trois compositions : un standard de Miles Davis à choisir parmi huit, un blues et un morceau à choix. Vêtue d’une élégante robe noire, Marialy Pacheco a ouvert le bal. Malgré quelques imperfections, la prestation passionnée de la souriante Cubaine de 29 ans a séduit le jury. « Les trois candidats ont été très difficiles à départager », a réagi en coulisses le président du jury, le pianiste polonais Leszek Możdżer. « Au final, le plaisir de jouer et l’authenticité ont guidé notre décision », a-t-il poursuivi. « La joie de Marialy Pacheco a fait revenir le piano à ses

vraies valeurs », a renchéri le pianiste français André Manoukian, membre du jury. Sur scène, la lauréate n’est pas parvenue à contenir son émotion. « Merci beaucoup, c’est incroyable ! », a-t-elle adressé aux spectateurs, avant de s’effondrer en larmes. Les yeux toujours brillants, elle a ensuite repris place au piano pour interpréter son morceau préféré devant un public amoureux. Benjamin Keller

PIANO COMPETITION: EMOTION FIRST On Tuesday afternoon, Cuban pianist Marialy Pacheco won the final of the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition 2012 at Montreux Palace. In a fully packed Petit Théâtre, she took first place ahead of Ukrainian Alex Pryrodny and Romanian Cezara-Lucia Vlădescu. The latter received the Prix du Public.Each contestant had to perform three composi-tions: a Miles Davis standard to choose from a selection of eight, a blues piece, and any other composition of their choice. Wearing a smart little black dress, Marialy Pacheco opened the festivities. Despite a few flaws, the passionate

performance of the smiling 29-year-old Cuban won over the jury. Backstage, Polish pianist and president of the jury Leszek Możdżer said, “Deciding between the three contenders was tough. In the end, the contestants’ joy in performing and their au-thenticity guided our decision making.” French pianist and member of the jury André Manoukian added: “Marialy Pacheco’s joy brought the piano back to its true values.”On stage, the laureate was unable to suppress her emotion. “Thank you very much, this is unbelievable!” she said to the spectators before bursting into tears. With glistening eyes, she then sat at the piano to play her favorite piece for the besotted audience.

3 QUESTIONS

Vous êtes partenaires pour la deuxième année à Montreux pour la création de contenu. Que vous apporte cette collaboration ?

Certainement de la visibilité pour l’école (pour rappel l’eikon est une section en art et communi-cation de Fribourg) mais surtout une immersion totale et une expérience très intense de création pour la vingtaine de stagiaires de l’eikon et son encadrement. La plus-value générée par la noto-riété de Montreux Jazz comme partenaire est un des moyen que j’ai choisi pour positionner notre formation dans un esprit avant-gardiste et le plus qualitatif possible. Par chance, l’expérience semble avoir été suffisamment pertinente pour les uns et les autres pour qu’elle se renouvelle encore cette année. Mais le challenge reste de ne jamais vraiment se répéter ….heureusement la qualité des contenus est d’ailleurs encore meilleure cette année je crois.

Avez-vous d’autres types de partenariats de ce genre ?Oui en effet…tout récemment en juin l’eikon

était “Partner School” d’Art Basel 43 avec un projet - concept nommé “Art Basel 360° “. Nous avions quasi carte blanche sur plusieurs projets de communica-tion, ce qui était une chance incroyable pour nous. Ensuite en cette fin d’année, nous allons travailler également avec la FABRICA de Benetton sur son projet de “Live windows” ou “projets de fenêtres interactives” autour du SIDA. La FABRICA dont on se souvient surtout du temps d’Olivero Toscani est encore une référence et je pense que tout le monde à l’eikon est assez excité à l’idée de ce projet lancé en simultané sur des dizaines d’écrans dans le monde.

Le modèle alternant pratique et cours nous semble particulièrement développé à l’eikon, c’est donc une stratégie assumée ?

Se préparer à la réalité du travail me paraît essentiel. En plus, être créatif demande certaine-

ment une couche supplémentaire de capacité, de proactivité ou d’adaptation hors du commun. C’est cela que visent ces projets: à la fois consolider des habiletés, des talents particuliers mais aussi permettre aux étudiants de se développer au-delà de ce que peut proposer une simple formation.

This is the second time you’ve worked with the Montreux Jazz Festival in content creation. What does this partnership mean to you?

It means more visibility for our school – eikonEMF is a Communication and Arts program in Fribourg – but also total immersion and an intense experience in creation for the twenty plus interns from eikonEMF and the people who supervise them. The Festival’s notoriety adds a lot of value to our program, which is why our partnership was a good way of positioning us in the highest possible quality avant-garde spirit. Fortunately, the experience proved to be sufficiently mutually beneficial to be renewed this year. But the challenge is to find a way of not repeating what has already been done….Luckily, I think the quality of the content is even better this year.

Are you engaged in other similar partnerships?Yes, we are. Recently, in June, eikonEMF was a

“Partner School” for Art Basel 43 with a concept-project called “Art Basel 360°.” We were given a free hand on various communication projects, which was an incredible opportunity for us. Then, at the end of this year, we will also work with Benetton’s FABRICA on their “Live windows” project (interac-tive windows), concerning AIDS. FABRICA, which we remember from the Olivero Toscani days, is still pretty famous and I think everybody at eikonEMF is really excited at the idea of this project that will

be launched simultaneously on dozens of screens throughout the world.

At eikonEMF, you encourage a model in which the students have both theoretical classes and practi-cal experience, is it a purposeful strategy?

It seems essential to me that the students be prepared for the reality of the work environment. Furthermore, being creative requires also being skilled, proactive, and uncommonly adaptable. That’s what these projects aim at: both firming up skill sets and specific talents as well as giving the students a chance to develop beyond what they could possibly learn in the classroom.

Nile est ami de longue date et un des plus grands producteurs au monde. Je me souviens toujours de cette soirée incroyable de 2005 où tout le public sautait dans l’Auditorium Stravinski au rythme du groove de CHIC. Je suis fière qu’il ait choisi Montreux cette année encore pour son hom-mage avec Mark Ronson au Disco à travers les ages.

Nile is a long time friend and one of the big-gest producers in the world. I’ll always remember that night in 2005 when the whole Auditorium Stravinski was dancing along with CHIC’s groove!
