As another advent season approaches, we come to the mostimportant fork road on this road that we, Christians, embarkon in our quest to follow Jesus - a season full of wonder,kindness and, most important, love.

A season in which the father among all great things thatcould have been done to bring the prince of peace into thisworld shown us with much grace and humbleness by havingthat baby boy be born in a stable among the livestock ofhardworking people. This backdrop then becomes a pivotalbackdrop of the narrative of who God is and what he requiresof us which we are reminded of in Micah 6:8 which is to seekjustice, love kindness and walk humbly with our God.

Our country finds itself at that crossroad. Will we be drivenby fear and ignorance and set this nation on path course thatwill lead us backwards or will we choose to lead with grace,kindness and love knowing that all of Gods children have aplace at the table that is rightfully his or hers bestowed uponthem by their heavily father.

And as the church of a living Christ what then becomes ourpurpose to assure that God’s grace is bestowed upon everyone of our brothers and sisters. Our task is simple if you havechosen to follow the prince of peace, for all of Christministry was about grace, kindness and above all love. Thatbaby boy came and dwelt among us to be that jolt that thisworld much needed, and Christmas comes every year as areminder of that birth and our covenant with that baby boy.

That covenant has never been more important than it is nowin our country today. A nation is built on the character of itspeople. Our responsibility as the citizens of this nation thatwas founded as experiment in freedom and justice on theback of men and women from all corners of this world thathave come here by choice or brought here becomes evenmore imperative. Will we choose to live by fear or by faith?

At Christmas the choice seems mighty obvious, let us remindourselves then once again this advent season of that covenantto seek justice, love kindness and walk humbly with our Godnot only at Christmas but each and every new day.

Una temporada en la que el padre, entre todas las grandescosas que se podrían haber hecho para traer al príncipe de lapaz a este mundo, nos mostró con mucha gracia y humildadal nacer ese bebé en un establo entre la gente trabajadora.Este telón de fondo se convierte en un telón de fondo de lanarración de quién es Dios y qué requiere de nosotros, de locual nos acordamos en Miqueas 6: 8 que es buscar justicia,amar la bondad y caminar humildemente con nuestro Dios.

Nuestro país se encuentra en esa encrucijada. ¿Seremosimpulsados por el miedo y la ignorancia y estableceremos aesta nación en el camino que nos llevará hacia atrás oelegiremos dirigir con gracia, amabilidad y amor sabiendoque todos los niños de Dios tienen un lugar en la mesa quees legítimamente de El, o de ella? otorgado por su granpadre.

En Navidad la elección parece muy obvia, recordemos unavez más esta temporada de advenimiento de ese pacto parabuscar justicia, amar la bondad y caminar humildemente connuestro Dios no solo en Navidad, sino en cada nuevo día.

The Advent season is already upon us!

Like always, the season has come way too soon, and I,for one, feel just as unprepared as ever. I suspect that Iam not alone in this.

Advent is a time of anxiety for many. We have to cleanand decorate our homes, bake cookies, buy and wrapgifts, throw parties, set up Christmas trees, and attendworship services. Above all, we must be happy! Thereis no place for unhappiness, for sorrow, for depressionin this season that has been exclusively reserved for joy.

I suspect that this may be the primary cause of theanxiety that many of us feel during this ‘special’ time ofyear? After all, what do we do when the joyful seasonleading up to Christmas doesn’t make us joyful at all?

• When our hearts are breaking?• When all we feel is empty and alone?• When we’re overwhelmed by everything that’s

expected of us?• When we live with fear in the face of real and

imagined dangers?• When we’re plagued by physical and emotional

pain?• When our addictions refuse to be tamed?

• When our futures seem utterly bleak and hopeless?

Our modern holiday traditions are of little use in dealingwith the real struggles of everyday life that all-too-oftenarise during this designated season of celebration.Finely decorated Christmas trees, colorful lights,cookies and candies, online and offline holiday sales,festive parties, Santa Clauses, elves and reindeer,beautiful crèches, sentimental carols… None of thesehas the capacity to carry us through our times of despair,fear, anxiety, anger, apathy, or pain. They may distractus for a time, but they leave us largely untouched andunchanged. To quote the English-American poet, W. H.Auden: We come to the end of the Christmas seasononly to find out that:

¡La temporada de Adviento ya está sobre nosotros!

Como siempre la temporada ha llegado demasiadotemprano. Y por mi parte, me siento tan desprevenido como siempre. Sospechoque no estoy solo en esto.

El adviento es un tiempo de ansiedad para muchos.Tenemos que limpiar y decorar nuestras casas, horneargalletas, comprar y envolver regalos, dar fiestas, montarárboles de navidad, y asistir a los servicios de adoración.Sobre todo, ¡debemos ser felices! Nuestras modernas tradiciones navideñas no nos ayudancon las luchas reales de la vida cotidiana que surgen condemasiada frecuencia durante esta temporada decelebración. Of course, unlike our modern celebrations, the firstChristmas was neither pretty nor nice. Jesus was borninto the midst of the world’s ugliness and meanness:

• He was the son of an unwed mother in a society thatstoned such women as adulteresses.

• He was poor in a world that systematically drove thepoor into destitution and servitude.

• He was a Jew in an empire where Jews sufferedbitter oppression at the hands of their Romanconquerors.

• He was a Nazarene in a culture that viewedNazarenes as backward, uneducated, and maybeeven a little stupid.

• He was born in the filth of a barn where he hadevery chance of catching a deadly disease that mighthave ended his young life.

The incarnation represents good news for all God’speople, but it is good news that makes an unexpectedappearance in the midst of the world’s bad news. Godenters this world through Jesus so that those whodespair might rediscover hope… so that those whostruggle against death might renew their trust in life…and so that all who dwell in darkness might believe inthe light.

The birth of the Christ child doesn’t immediately solvethe world’s problems. Greed, fear, hatred, ignorance,and violence continue to hold sway over the humanheart and to guide the course of human history. Thegood news is that God is with us through it all to guide,to instruct, to inspire, and to save. God in Christ is withus even in the midst of the bad news that all-too-oftenseems to dominate our lives. As the gospel of Johnreminds us: “The light shines in the darkness and thedarkness [does] not overcome it.” (John 1:5, RSV)

ECHO PARK UMC2017 Christmas Toy Drive

This year, EPUMC will be distributing toys tochildren from our own Echo Park neighborhoodwho might not otherwise get any Christmasgifts.

On Sunday, December 10, we will distribute tickets atour Community Christmas Party, which will be heldbetween our 10:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. worship services. Families receiving tickets will identify the names, agesand genders of the children for whom they need gifts.They will then redeem those tickets for gifts on Sunday,December 24, following one of our three Christmas Eveworship services (10:30am; 2:00pm; 7:00pm).

Those who wish to donate to this year’s toy drive, stillhave time to do so until December 17. Please continueto give prayerful thought to how many more extra stepsyou would like to take in following Christ.

We will march alongside other local churches,community groups, and businesses. We will invitepeople to our Community Christmas Party, invite themto share in our Christmas Toy Drive, let them knowabout our Christmas Eve worship services, and testify tothe new life that we have experienced in Jesus.

The parade is an excellent opportunity to have a goodtime with other church members, listen to Christmasmusic, get to know our neighbors, show our communityspirit, and let people know about who we are and whatwe are up to as God’s people in this time and place.Along the way, we even get a little exercise!

As a special treat, our pastor promises to providehomemade Christmas cookies and hot cocoa for allmembers and friends of EPUMC who take part in theparade.

Please let Lisa Palombi or Pastor Wulf know if you planto join us in the parade.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The outside faucet on the northeast corner of the church wasleaking as it could not be turned off due to a rounded "off"valve stem. This was the result of many people using pliersto turn the valve "on" and "off." We purchased a new faucetwith a shield around the valve stem so that only a water keycould turn the water "on" or "off." Many thanks to MarkPhillips for installing the new faucet which is now workingproperly.

At the end of every Rummage Sale, there is always bags andboxes of merchandise that did not sell but is saleable. Westore these items on the back in the large basement banquetroom. Mark Phillips makes arrangements with the SalvationArmy to take these items so that our stage is empty forgroups wanting to use our facilities for parties. The SalvationArmy usually comes early in the morning for pick-up whichmeans Mark has to be at the Church to open the doors. It isjust another wonderful thing that Mark does to help ourChurch. We now have an empty stage. Many thanks, Mark.

The vinyl tiles in the dining room and kitchen in our churchbasement needed a new coat of wax. These two rooms get alot of foot traffic. The tiles have to be stripped of all old waxand dirt before new was can be applied. These means movingtables and chairs outside to mop off the old wax with thestripper. The new wax coat is then mopped on and must drybefore buffing. It takes a whole day to do this. Many thanksto Mark Phillips, Juan Antonio Alvarez and Miguel Aguilarfor working all day Saturday after Thanksgiving to get ourfloors looking good again for the Christmas activities. A verybig job well done!

As we await the birth of our Blessed Savior, let usremember what this Season is all about. Remember, "lovecame down at Christmas," so now we must show this love toour neighbors and friends. We can start doing this bybringing a toy for a child who may not receive any giftduring this Season. Please bring your unwrapped or already-wrapped gift toy (with a label attached eg. boy-toddler orgirl-elementary, etc.) to the church by December 17. We willhave a wrapping party on that Sunday after Fellowship Time.

We have decided to reach out to our Community during ourChristmas Party on Sunday, December 10, so please inviteyour neighbors and friends to join us. After the 10:30 a.m.English Service, and the 2:00 p.m. Spanish Service, we willhave parents and/or adult relatives of the children who willbe given Christmas gifts to register their child/children soeach can be given a ticket/coupon to claim their gift onSunday, December 24. After each of the three WorshipServices on December 24, we will be distributing the toys tothe children registered upon their presentation of their claimticket/coupon. Our monthly Laundry Love Project in partnership with St.Athanasius Episcopal Church and Aroma Laundry will beheld on Tuesday, December 19, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. If youhave any questions, please contact Rev. Frank Wulf or me.Laundry Love is a project to help our homeless or low-income neighbors in the Community to do their laundry withus providing the soap and money for the washers and dryers,and them doing the actual work. Cuando las cosas van mal en tu vida, ¿buscas los métodosdel mundo para resolver problemas antes de ir a Dios?¿Pones más confianza en las instituciones del sistema deeste mundo que en la Palabra de Dios?Como cristianos, debemos poner nuestra esperanza y fe en lamanera que Dios de hace las cosas. Este tipo de confianzasolo se desarrolla al cultivar nuestra relación con él.

¿Cómo te sentirías si tuvieras una forma de ayudar aalguien a quien amas pero tu eres la última persona a laque recurrieron? Eso podría ser dañino porque nuncadeseas ser el último recurso de alguien, especialmente sitienes una relación con ellos y te conocen bien. Del mismo

Throughout His Word, God is always communicating themessage to His children, "If you would give me topconsideration, I will prove Myself to you. I will feed you. Iwill clothe you. I will take care of you. You don't have toworry."

Many people cannot understand this type of love. Perhapsbecause they have never been shown unconditional love, theyfail to understand how someone could love them this way.They have a difficult time accepting that our Heavenly Fatherloves us so much He gave His only begotten Son to save usfrom our sins. He forgives us time and time again, presentingus with new opportunities to serve Him each day.

Today, I want you to see Him as a loving Father who wantsto pour out His blessings upon your life. He wants to chaseyou down with mercy, grace, and favor! He wants to spendtime fellowshipping with you as He would a best friend, butyou must be willing to take time to develop your relationshipwith Him.

God knows everything you need before you ask Him. Iknow you are probably thinking, Well, if He knows, whydon't He just give them to me? Maybe you have not askedHim according to His Word! Or, you may have asked withselfish, lustful motives. You may have neglected to give Himpriority in your life. However, you can make a correctionstarting today!

God reveals His loving nature through His Word because Heis love. Time and time again throughout my life He hasshowered me with His love through His Word. I had to getacquainted with His Word by studying and meditating onit. I had to develop that personal relationship on my own.

Our relationship with Him can serve as a model for all ourrelationships. When we live our life according to HisWord, we learn to love people unconditionally. God is thedesigner of healthy, loving relationships. Through His WordHe urges all mankind to choose Him, draw near to Him, trustHim, believe Him, and to never forget His love for us.

You have a choice if you’re a prizefighter. You see, we areall prizefighters whether we know it or not, whether we wantto be or not. And we have to expect to get hit. Sure, we try toavoid getting hit; only an idiot would stand there and lethimself be clobbered. But, you have to understand that it’scompletely unrealistic to expect that we can avoid getting hitaltogether. No matter how skilled and talented you are, nomatter how tough and strong you are, you’re going to get hitand it’s going to hurt.

The question is: What do you do after you get hit? Do youquit in fear, give up? Life is a contact sport.

In baseball, you might get hit with the ball. You lovebaseball, but you’re afraid of the ball. You might be so afraidof the ball that you don’t even swing at it with your bat. Youjust dive into the dust to avoid being hit.

Imagine if Reggie Jackson had done such a thing. He’d neverhave had a candy bar named after him! Yet too many peopledo precisely that. They dive into the dust and try to avoidlife, because they’re afraid they might get hurt.

But you have to be willing to get hurt. You have to acceptthat that’s just the way life is. In fact, you have to embracegetting hurt. That sounds strange, but that’s the only way toget through the pain. Things don’t always go right. That’s thereality. But many times, things do go right. That’s also thereality.

The question is: Which reality are you going to embrace? Asfor me, I choose the reality of things going right. There’s noway I can cushion the blow of disappointment. It’s going tohurt just the same. The question is, what am I going to dowith the disappointment? Let it defeat me and keep me from

Si seamos boxeadores profesionales, tenemos una opción.¡Mira! Todos nosotros somos boxeadores profesionales si losabemos o no, si lo queremos o no. Y tenemos que esperarque nos vayan a golpear. Por supuesto, tratamos de evitar quenos golpean. Sólo un idiota se dejaría ser golpeado sinintentar protegerse. Sin embargo, tenemos que comprenderque es completamente irrealista esperar que podamos evitarser golpeados por completo. No importa cuan hábiles ytalentosos seamos, no importa cuan duros y fuertes seamos,vamos a ser golpeados y va a doler.

La pregunta es: ¿Qué vamos a hacer después de que somosgolpeados? La vida es un deporte de contacto.

En béisbol, podamos ser golpeados por la pelota. Nosencanta el béisbol, pero tememos la pelota. Tal vez tengamostanto miedo de la pelota de que ni siquiera balanceamosnuestro bate. Sólo nos zambullimos al suelo para evitar sergolpeados.

If I do that, I might as well not even bother to get out of bedin the morning. Why even bother to brush my teeth andfloss? They’re just going to fall out anyway. Why bother togo to work or school? I’ll just get fired or flunk out! What’sthe point? What’s the point in taking my next breath? It’llprobably just be my last anyway.

Why hope? Why hope, indeed? Because it’s better than fear!You can’t live in fear. That’s not natural. And you can’t livein fear of being disappointed.

Think of a professional prizefighter who trains and trains andtrains but is too afraid to get in the ring because he’s afraidhe might get punched in the face or body.

Think of a professional dancer who’s too afraid to performbecause she might miss a step. Or a professional writer whodecides to never write again because some people didn’t likehis last novel. Think of all the people you admire in sports,film, business or the arts. What if they had let the fear ofdisappointment stop them? They wouldn’t be here for you toadmire or to inspire you to be as great as they are.

Think about that the next time you get the wind knocked outof you. That’s a setback and all setbacks are temporary.Remember, a setback is a setup for a comeback. Instead ofgiving up, use the time to let your wounds heal and set upyour next game plan.

Your next plan might be so much better than your first you’llwonder why you didn’t think of it first! And when someonetells you, “Don’t get your hopes up,” don’t get angry at thatperson. Be understanding, kind, smile at them, and move on.Let her get her hopes down and keep them down if that’swhat she wants. You can pray for her, but don’t make themistake of trying to change her. You leave her to God.

Jesus is asking us a question. It was a question He asked twoblind men two thousand years ago when they asked Him torestore their sight. They had been blind since birth. Christasked them simply, “Do you believe I can do this?” Despitethe doubts and fears they may have harbored in the backs oftheir minds, fears that maybe Jesus couldn’t restore theirsight or maybe He wouldn’t restore their sight because theyhad been such awful sinners, they deliberately chose faithover fear and said they knew He could do it. Jesus saidsomething to them that was as powerful then as it is eventoday: “According to your faith, let it be so!”

According to your faith, let it be so. Therefore let us chosefaith, and let your hopes soar higher than the clouds. Becausehope beats fear any day!

Si me entrego a la decepción, ¿por qué debería molestarmeen salir de la cama por la mañana? ¿Por qué deberíamolestarme en lavarme los dientes? Mis dientes se van a caerde todos modos. ¿Por qué debería molestarme en ir al trabajoo a la escuela? ¡Sólo seré despedido! ¡Sólo fracasaré! ¿Paraqué? ¿Por qué debo respirar mi próximo aliento? De todosmodos, ¡probablemente será mi ultimo aliento!

¿Por qué esperamos? ¡Porque la esperanza es mejor que elmiedo! No podemos vivir con el miedo. No es natural. Nopodemos vivir con el miedo de que seremos decepcionados.

Pensemos en un boxeador profesional que se entrena y seentrena, pero tiene demasiado miedo para entrar en elcuadrilátero porque piensa que podría ser golpeado en la carao en el cuerpo.

Pensemos en una bailarín profesional que tiene demasiadomiedo para actuar porque podría perder un paso… o unescritor profesional que decide no escribir más porque aalgunas personas no les gustó su novela anterior. Pensemosen todas las personas que admiramos en los deportes, el cine,los negocios, o las artes. Si ellos hubieran permitido que elmiedo los detuviera, nosotros no los estariamos admirandohoy y ellos no nos estarían inspirando hoy.

Pensemos en estas cosas la próxima vez cuando la vida nosderriba. Sólo es un contratiempo, y todos los contratiemposson pasajeros. ¡Mira! Un revés es una configuración para unregreso. En lugar de rendirnos, utilicemos el tiempo paracurar nuestras heridas y hacer nuestros próximos planes.

Nuestro próximo plan pueda ser tan mucho mejor quenuestro último plan que nos preguntaremos por qué nopensamos en él primero. Y cuando alguien nos dice: “¡No lesden ilusiones!” no debemos enojarnos con aquella persona.Seamos comprensivos y amables; les sonríamos, y sigamosadelante. Si ella quiera hacerlo, ella pueda reducir susesperanzas. Podamos orar por ella, pero no debemos hacer elerror de intentar cambiarla. Debemos dejarla con Dios.

Jesús nos está haciendo una pregunta. Es la misma preguntaque preguntó a dos ciegos hace dos mil años cuandosolicitaron que él les restaurara la vista. Ellos habían sidociegos desde el nacimiento. Cristo simplemente les preguntó,“¿Creen que puedo hacer esto?” A pesar de las dudas ymiedos que puedan haber albergado en sus mentes – miedosde que tal vez Jesús no pudiera restaurarles la vista o de queJesús no les restaurara la vista porque eran grandes pecadores– ellos eligieron la fe en lugar del miedo y dijeron que sabíanque él podría hacerlo.
