Dear Friends in Christ,
With the new year well underway, have you stopped writing 2019 yet? I have! Instead, I wrote 2012. I don’t know where that came from, but it raises a good question: When it comes to the church, what
year do you think it is? In other words, is the present church living with an eye to the past or toward the future?
Dr. Jock Ficken from Pastoral Leadership Institute shares that in the 1950s, 95% of the populations self-identified as Christian, 63% of Americans were members of a church body, 50% of the population
was in church on Sunday. Gone are those days! Today, just 25% of the US population is considered a practicing Christian (defined as someone who attends worship at least once a month and indicates “my
faith is very important.”—not exactly a high bar). And 59% of millennials raised in the church have dropped out. Those are the honest numbers. We can either acknowledge them, deny them or just plain
hope things turn around. Or, we can do something about it knowing that none of this takes our missionary God by surprise. He is firm control and inviting His people to get in on what He is doing.
So let’s do a little “state of the church” business here. FCLC is growing—that’s good! So is the Treasure Valley area. We are planting a church in Kuna—that’s very good! And we’ll plant more. I’m
looking at you, Middleton! We have financial resources—that’s certainly helpful and not the limiting factor as it is for many churches. And perhaps best of all, we’re positioned and established as a healthy
church that cares about the mission God gave us. But one of my concerns for Friendship Celebration is that we’re growing older and not growing
younger. That’s not ideal for the future. What will our congregation look like in 2030? Some of you aren’t expecting to be here in a decade and may just be hoping to ride it out. But I think there’s a better
way. It’s not about programs, but it is about relationships. It’s not about membership, it’s about discipleship. While membership is about our connection to the church, discipleship is about our
connection to Jesus. While the stats show the North American church at large is in decline, Jesus is not! He is alive and well and on the loose. The church is facing a time of refining (letting go of what doesn’t work or matter) and refocusing on what does matters. We need more baptisms. We need the spiritually
mature to pour into those who need guidance and mentoring. Helping people grow and become like Jesus matters. And there just happens to be 357,000 people (and growing) in the Treasure Valley who
don’t know Jesus.
The point is this. It’s 2020. We are much closer to the 2030 reality than the 1950s past. The future will be different, and encouragingly, we can prepare for it and even shape it to some degree as we ask God to guide us out of comfort zones and into a far greater adventure. God is still in the people
business. Let’s join Him in it by making disciples. The answers will come along the way as we follow Jesus and help others do the same. What the church will look like in the future depends on following
His lead today. Now’s the time!
For King Jesus,
Pastor Matt Henry

No whining! Have you ever been to Alcatraz, the well-known former prison on an island in San Francisco Bay? I have been there several times. Believe me, it is a long, cold swim to San Francisco shore line. Actually, we lived
in the Bay Area for 15 years. When our family and friends visited us from the mid-west they wanted to see the sights in the area. San Francisco, cable car rides, Golden Gate Park, Fisherman’s Wharf, Fort Point,
the Golden Gate Bridge, and Ghirardelli Square were always high on their list. Several also want to take the trip to Alcatraz Island. So we went on the tour several times.
It was an eerie place. This prison was known for housing some of the nation’s most notorious criminals. To maintain order, prisoners were expected to know the rules and obey them. Rule # 23 was especially
important: “If you make groundless complaints for the purpose of causing dissatisfaction and stirring up trouble you will be subject to disciplinary action.” That’s right, you could get into trouble for WHINING!
Now back up to 1965. I attended a boarding high school. I lived, went to school, ate meals, and spent my
free time with about 100 other guys. After four years we knew one another pretty well. We were a brotherhood, we were loyal to one another, we wouldn’t squeal on one another, we’d take the wrap for each other and would defend and fight for one another if necessary. And after 4 years we had an attitude, a
BAD attitude. We were TERTIA, the Latin name for seniors in our school. We were tired of the dining hall food, our proctors, classes, and the rules and regulations we were suppose to live by. Our senior
sweatshirt had one big negative sign ( - ) on it. In a nutshell we were whiners.
Whining is not just something that high school seniors do. There are perpetual whiners. They whine all their lives about everything: politics, relatives, kids, parents, church and God, work, health, you name it and someone is whining about it. Do you know that God through the Apostle Paul has a policy on
whining? The Bible says:
“Do everything readily and cheerfully – no bickering or second guessing allowed! Go out into the
world uncorrupted, a breath of fresh air in this squalid and polluted society. Provide people with
a glimpse of good living and of the living God. Carry the light-giving Message into the night so
that I’ll have good cause to be proud of you on that day that Christ returns.”
—Philippians 2:14-15 The Message.
God wants us to be positive, but not because He is keeping order among prisoners. Actually, because of
Jesus we are FREE. The reason He wants us to watch our attitude is that some people don’t know yet that Jesus has set them FREE too. They are still prisoners of sin.
When we watch the tone of our voice and attitude, we let other people know there is a better way. We
walk through this world with the keys that set whining prisoners free. In God’s grip,
Pastor Tom

We are all enjoying this wonderful winter season at preschool and are excited for a fun filled February. You will find our rooms decorated with heart shapes, shades of red, and catch us
doing many fun Valentine activities. God’s love has blessed us with many wonderful students this year and we are thankful for them all.
Our in-house field trip presented by the IBG (Idaho Botanical Garden) was fantastic. The
children learned about fossils. The children learned a lot of interesting information about fossils. Thanks, IBG Boise, for sharing with us it was great.
In February, we will be having a Dentist come to school and help us to learn how to brush our teeth better and what foods are good for our teeth.
February 29th at 4:30pm, here at Friendship Celebration, is our one and only School
Fundraiser. We would love to see you all there. We will be serving dinner, having a live and silent auction, and the kids will get to play some fun games.
Thanks to you all for your support of our preschool.

Friendship Celebration Outreach Ministries to local underprivileged children and families in need.
ONE CHURCH ONE CHILD (1C1C)
Friendship Celebration supports the program “One Church One Child “managed by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, where local churches are invited to provide foster parents and support for foster children and families. The overall goal is to have no child age-out of care before
they can become part of a nurturing home. So if the Holy Spirit is urging you to consider being a foster parent please contact Monique Layton at 208-249-0180; [email protected] for foster care
services. If the Spirit is encouraging you to provide resources and services to help children deal with their circumstances so they can become healthy adults, please contact Linda Wakefield at 208-334-
6844; [email protected]. Church participation is all voluntary, so support varies depending on the willingness and ability of the church and its members to provide support.
Here is a list of requests:
Always needed are: diapers of all sizes, baby wipes, underwear and socks 0-18, bunk beds,
lice kits, mattresses
For the Winter season, 1C1C is requesting the following:
New or very good condition winter clothing/caps, shoes and active wear Winter weather toys, sports gear, boots and blankets
Hygiene items, Diaper cream, Strollers, Cribs If you are able to provide or have questions about any of these items, or if you have a specific way
you would like to serve or have questions about how to get involved, please contact Craig Hoellwarth at 916-833-1713; [email protected]. Craig will pick up and deliver any items
provided.
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do
not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people…Galatians 6:9

FAMILY ADVOCATES (FA) In the Treasure Valley today there are hundreds of underprivileged children and struggling families
that need our help. Family Advocates mission is to strengthen families and keep kids safe by empowering everyday people to protect and enrich the lives of youth through its Family
Strengthening and CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) Programs. Family Strengthening enlists the support of volunteers to work with underprivileged families to create important networks and healthy habits through classes, activities and mentoring.
Donations can be dropped off at 3010 W State Street in Boise or picked up and delivered by Craig
Hoellwarth (916-833-1713 or [email protected]). All gifts should be NEW.

What your imagination suggests
If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has not pity on him, how
can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue,
but with actions in truth. 1 John 3:17-18
CASA is aimed at protecting children from abuse and neglect. Trained volunteers investigate child
abuse and neglect, and then advocate for abused or neglected children in the legal system to make sure the child’s voice is heard. This program is always in need of people willing to take a personal interest in a child who is at the mercy of the Courts and needs someone to lookout for them and give
them a place to go when there is no one else to talk to.
The need includes both individual volunteers called Guardians Ad Litem and pro-bono attorneys who provide legal assistance for the child and the Guardian.
If the Lord is tugging at your heart to directly support local children and families in need, please talk with Craig Hoellwarth at 916-833-1713; [email protected], or see the Family Advocates
website at www.familyadvocates.org.
Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.
Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. Psalm 82:3
