The Central Government, in its financial Budget-2015, has brought in certain changes in the excise laws. As per these changes, there were many uncertainties regarding the passing of modvat credit by7 first stage and second stage dealers. There were also changes with regards to sale in transit and E1/E2 transactions.

In order to understand the changes, the Association organized a seminar on the subject and invited Shri. Rajan Mashelkar of Sadguru Consultancy & Services. Mr. Mashelkar is an ex-excise official from Mumbai and is currently advising many traders At Lohar Chawl, including major Polcab dealers.

Speaking at length on the subject, he threw light on many aspects of the changes and also answered various queries from members who had packed the EMA hall. Summarizing his views, he opined that all those who wished to pass on Modvat credit to their customers, will be required to register with the Excise department. He also conveyed that there were practical difficulties in the applications. He informed that the consultants as well as experts were in the process of making a presentation to the Ministry. But, till the time there were any clarifications from New Delhi, it would be advisable to register, as the effects of the implementation could be retrospective.

The Association noted the views of the speaker and thanked him for his time.

EXCISE SEMINAR

The religious festival of MahavirJayanti is celebrated by the Jain community to commemorate the birth of the Lord Mahavira.

Mahavira was the 24th and the last Tirthankara (enlightened being). He was born in 599 BCE to King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. As per legend, the Lord after birth was bathed by the god-king Indra with celestial milk. This ritual marked his birth as the birth of a Tirthankara.

Mahavira, also called as Vardhamana, is regarded as a significant propagator of Jainism, as well as its reformer.

He preached the philosophy to encourage nonviolence (Ahimsa), truthfulness (Satya), chastity (Bramacharya), non-stealing (Asatya), and simple living (Aparigraha).

Lord Mahavira died in 527 BC at the age of 72 to achieve Moksha or Nirvana. His body was cremated at Pawapuri, which was later on converted into a Jain temple (presently known as Jal Mandir).

On this day, followers of Jainism bring home statues of Mahavira and give it a ceremonial bath traditionally called as Abhisheka. Special processions are carried out by the followers, showcasing a tableau on the life of Mahavira. Jain temples are packed with the devotees of the Lord who wish to seek blessings of Mahavira for prosperity.

The act of giving forms a significant part of the celebration. Following the principles of Lord Mahavira, the devotees practice charitable acts in one way or other.

The gift of giving can be any of the following:

lGyandaan (spreading words of knowledge)

Abhaydaan (guarding the good from evil)

Aushaddaan (lending medical help)

Ahaardaan (feeding the starving)

Good Friday is a Christian religious holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. The holiday is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday, or Easter Friday, though the last term properly refers to the Friday in Easter week.

Why do we call Good Friday “good,” when it is such a dark and bleak event commemorating a day of suffering and death for Jesus?

Good Friday is a crucial day of the year because it celebrates what we believe to be the most momentous weekend in the history of the world. Ever since Jesus died and was raised, Christians have proclaimed the cross and resurrection of Jesus to be the decisive turning point for all creation. Paul considered it to be “of first importance” that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and was raised to life on the third day, all in accordance with what God had promised all along in the Scriptures.

On Good Friday we remember the day Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins . It is followed by Easter, the glorious celebration of the day Jesus was raised from the dead, heralding his victory over sin and death and pointing ahead to a future resurrection for all who are united to him by faith.

Good Friday is “good” because as terrible as that day was, it had to happen for us to receive the joy of Easter. The wrath of God against sin had to be poured out on Jesus, the perfect sacrificial substitute, in order for forgiveness and salvation to be poured out to the nations. Without that awful day of suffering, sorrow, and shed blood at the cross, God could not be both “just and the justifier” of those who trust in Jesus . Paradoxically, the day that seemed to be the greatest triumph of evil was actually the deathblow in God's gloriously good plan to redeem the world from bondage.

The cross is where we see the convergence of great suffering and God's forgiveness. Psalms 85:10 sings of a day when “righteousness and peace” will “kiss each other.” The cross of Jesus is where that occurred, where God's demands, his righteousness, coincided with his mercy. We receive divine forgiveness, mercy, and peace because Jesus willingly took our divine punishment, the result of God's righteousness against sin. “For the joy set before him Jesus endured the cross on Good Friday, knowing it led to his resurrection, our salvation, and the beginning of God's reign of righteousness and peace.
