OLD CAPITOL QUILTERS GUILD

Monthly Meeting - October 13, 2014

Join us Monday, October 13, as author and international teacher Ellen Anne Eddy shares her body of

work in a lecture titled, "The Enchanted World of Ellen Anne Eddy."

On Tuesday, there are spaces remaining in her all day workshop on October 14 titled "Thread Magic

Mastery: Working with All Kinds of Threads." Don't miss this opportunity to explore and work with many

different kinds of threads and techniques to add a variety of embellishments to your work. This class goes

far beyond the typical stitching and quilting. Thread can become a dominant design element like applique

and so much more. Learn to add these elements and the tricks to make stitching go smoothly. Contact

Linda Kahlbaugh at (319) 330-8140 or email her at [email protected] to sign up and get a supply

list. Class starts at 9 am.

Important note: Ellen Eddy, our speaker, is very allergic to perfume. Please don’t wear any to our

meeting or the workshop. Thanks.

Hostesses for October Jody Wiley and a Volunteer

Quilt Show Committee Needed

Thank you so much to those who volunteered to be on

the quilt show committee. However, we still do not have

enough people to organize the show. If we cannot fill these

volunteer spots we will not be able to host a show. Not hav-

ing the show is a great loss for our guild in terms of fundrais-

ing and community outreach.

The quilt show will be June 6th and 7th (with set-up on

the 5th), in conjunction with Iowa City Arts Fest. Even if

you cannot make those dates, you can still be on the organiz-

ing committee! (Volunteers to staff the event will be re-

quested closer to the dates of the show.)

The following positions still need to be filled for the

show to run:

Committee Chair (1), Assistant Chair (1), Treasurer (1),

Silent Auction (1 or 2), Publicity Outreach (1 or 2), Vol-

unteer Staffing (1 or 2).

We already have volunteers in these areas, but a second

person would be welcome to lighten the load:

Facility, Raffle, and Children’s Area

If you are interested in filling one of these roles, or need

more information, please contact Jessica Marks.

2015 Guild Challenge: Using Solid Fabrics Only

Many of the modern quilts being made are going back to

the basics and using solid fabrics, so we decided that this year

we would do the same. This year’s challenge can be any size

from a table runner to a large quilt, but it must be made in all

solid fabrics and contain at least 3 different colors. No marbles

or tone-on-tone fabrics are allowed. This means no hand dyes,

fabric must not not be mottled like batik solids. Any pattern

can be used. It doesn't have to be a modern quilt or an old

Amish design. Be creative and use those Kona solids or Bella

solids from your stash or branch out into something new. As

always, the project must be quilted, bound, and have a quilt

label on the finished piece.

Entries will be judged by all members of the guild present

at the July 13th general meeting. A monetary award will be

given to the winner of the 2015 Challenge.

Meeting Hostesses Hostesses are still needed for most of our meetings. We need at

least 2 hostesses per meeting. If you can fill a spot, please con-

tact Jessica Marks.

PRESIDENT’S PATCH Hi quilters:

I just finished a big project, which means I am currently in

a lull. Does this happen to you? I get so into a project, and it is

all I do for a long time, and then when I’m done, even though I

have a hundred things waiting for me, I just don’t want to quilt

anything else. So right now, I’m not quilting.

It is a bit of a shame I’m not quilting, because for the next

month I won’t have much quilting time, so I should use it while

I have it. This weekend I fly to New York for training for a

new job. And then when I get back I have a weekend wedding

to go to, half a week of work, and then I leave for a vacation

I’ve been planning for two and a half years. We are going to

the Galapagos Islands. I’ve always liked pictorial quilts, so

maybe I will be able to get inspiration for one while I am there.

My husband tells me there is enough room in his memory cards

for about 10,000 photos, so surely one of those can be a quilt!

As for the project I just finished, it is hanging in the entry

hallway. I love to display quilts around the house and we have

quite a few of them up (including my Mother-in-law’s baby

quilt) but I try not to overwhelm my husband by hanging quilts

in every room. In my opinion, every room should have a quilt-

maybe I'll convince him eventually.

Hopefully this lull won't last long and I'll soon be diving

into a free motion project that I’ve been planning for! Happy Quilting,

Jessica Marks

Service Committee Report for October

Thanks to everyone who brought in shopping bags. We

always appreciate anything we can use that makes it easier to

deliver our charity projects.

Since all of us on the committee this year are new to the

process, we are trying to collect all our materials together and

see just what we have and decide where we go from here. Any

kit-making projects are going to be made by the committee at

this point, until we have a better feel for the blocks and materi-

als that will make up good kits.

One member of our new committee feels she can no longer

serve, so we’d appreciate having anyone who wants to join us

at the service committee table. Sue Moffett has graciously

agreed to join us as the member who will provide the quilt of

the month blocks, which you will often see with this column in

the newsletter.

We hope to have more kits for you to take home and sew at

the next meeting, and we also hope to have some that just re-

quire binding and labels. There are already some kits that need

to be quilted, so hope you will be able to help us with that proc-

ess, too.

Until next time…keep on stitching!

October Block of the Month

This month’s block is the Shoo Fly pattern which will combine well with the rail

fence and nine patch blocks that many of you have been doing. The unfinished size is 9

½ inches that will finish at 9 inches.

You may use your choice of colors. It would be nice to have several blocks of the

same colors to make it easy to make kits for our charity sew in. This block may be easily

pieced with each section of the block being 3 ½ inches before stitching together.

Call for Bibs

Jan Kock, Director of Home Ties Child Care Center, a non-

profit local organization, is in need of bibs. She said, "Since we

have 6 infants and 7 toddlers, we are going through bibs like

crazy and are finding that we run out before we get to Friday.

If some kind souls could sew us a bunch of new bibs, it would

help us a lot. We can use 3-4 dozen. They get worn out from

washing them. Simple bibs made from a hand towel or wash-

cloth with bias tape ties seem to work well. The kids don't like

the ones that go over their heads, so the tie ones are the best."

she shared with us. Debbie spoke at our October meeting and

taught a workshop on Tuesday where we learned to cut and sew

curved seams.

Student Class Information. Please read this before class.

I know many of the things I use for creating my quilts are

hard to find. I won’t do kits for most classes because kits limit

what I can bring you and limit your choices for your work.

Instead I bring all kinds of resources into class for you so you

can have what you need in class, without having to purchase

something you don’t want.

Please bring anything you want to experiment with to class

if you have them. But don’t worry about finding things that

you don’t know where to get. Kits for fabric and stabilizer are

available. But I leave thread choices up to you. I’ll bring in the

right stabilizers, fusibles, hand-dyed fabrics, the best threads,

and tools I trust. They’re there for you to choose so you can

pick exactly what you need and want in class. You can make a

tab and settle up at the end of your class time.

A big part of enjoying a class is being able to participate

and experiment. If your machine isn’t working right, it makes

that harder. I will make every effort to help you if your ma-

chine is in trouble, but there are things you should do to help

avoid problems.

Please bring a machine you are familiar with! If you are

borrowing a machine, make sure you know how to thread the

machine, wind a bobbin, and change the feet. Bring your man-

ual if you can, and all your attachments.

In general, sewing machines are like cars. They need regu-

lar maintenance. Before any machine class, please take your

machine out, check that it has the correct feet, and that it's

working properly. If it hasn't been tuned up in the last two

years, please have that done. Your good experience in any ma-

chine quilting class depends on your machine being in its best

condition.

You probably know what you need to make your sewing

day more comfortable. If you are more comfortable with a spe-

cial light, chair or a pillow, bring it. Also if you have an ex-

tending table for your machine, that can be a great help.

If you have questions or problems with your machine, or

anything you are having trouble finding, feel free to call me and

discuss it before class. I may be able to bring just the right

gadget or book to make things work better for you. Ellen Anne Eddy, 125 Franklin, Porter, IN 46304

November Workshop and Guild Meeting

On Monday, November 10, Doris Deutmeyer will be our

guest speaker and earlier that same day will teach a workshop

using Shiva Oil Paintstiks. Doris is a Midwest fiber artist and

former elementary art educator working in the arts for over 35

years. She is best known for her fused appliqué fabric land-

scapes and mini foundation pieced quilt blocks which are mat-

ted and framed. Doris exhibits her fiber art work at Quilt/

Sewing Expos, Fine Art/Craft shows, and local art exhibits.

Please visit Doris’ website, www.fabricationsbydoris.com, to

learn more about her career and business, Fabrications by Doris

Deutmeyer.

Our lecture Monday evening is titled, “Creative Fused – Is

It Art.”

Her workshop is “Explore! Shimmering Landscapes with

Paintstiks.” This fun full day workshop begins with exploring

the basic paintstik techniques for applying color to fabric with

the use of rubbings, stencils and masks. You will gain confi-

dence to create shimmering landscapes as you learn simple

techniques including masking, torn paper, freezer paper, and

shading to depict clouds, hills, water, trees and rock formations.

You don’t have to be an artist or have any painting experience

to make your own painted fabric and beautiful art quilt land-

scapes with Shiva Oil Paintstiks. The results are fantastic!

Participants must purchase a kit fee for $28, payable to

Doris at class time. Please see the supply list for this class in

the next column.

We will start class at 9:30 and break around noon for a

potluck lunch. The fee for this class is $25 and sign-up will

begin at our Oct. meeting. Or if you wish to sign up early, call

Carole Ramsey at 337-9330 or email [email protected].

This will put you on the list, but remember to bring your check-

book to the October meeting to reserve your space.

"Days for Girls Sew-a-Thon"

To celebrate the International Day of the Girl, the Iowa City Chapter of Days for Girls is hosting a three day "Sew-a-Thon" Fri-

day, Oct. 10th and Saturday, Oct. 11th from 9-4 at Inspirations Quilt Shop in Hills and on Sunday, Oct. 12th at Home Ec in Iowa

City from 10-3.

Days for Girls International helps girls gain access to quality sustainable feminine hygiene by direct distribution of washable

feminine hygiene kits. For many girls around the world, the lack of sanitary supplies means days away from school. The poverty

cycle can be broken when girls stay in school. More information can be found on their website: www.daysforgirls.org.

We hope you can come join us to work on parts of the feminine hygiene kits. Come for part of a day or all three days, there will

be lots to do. The Iowa City Chapter is teaming up with the Cedar Rapids and Des Moines Chapters to assemble at least 500 kits that

are designated to be sent to South Africa leaving November 9th.

If you are coming for the day, we encourage you to bring a bag lunch. Drinks, desserts and snacks will be provided. There will

be supplies ready for sewing and items needing ironing and hand work. Bring your machine if you wish or if not, there will be

things to do not requiring a sewing machine. If you have a serger, please bring it.

We should have enough fabric for these three days, but if you are interested in donating fabric or supplies for future sew-a-thons,

here are suggestions for what we need:

- The girls love color! Fabric type, color, and design is VERY IMPORTANT.

- Cotton flannel for liners in colorful, pretty, bright, medium to dark colors that will not show stains. No prints of animals, peo-

ple, insects, snakes, or culture-specific topics or words. Any size larger than 9" x 9" can be used. Fabric needs to be pre-

washed and ironed.

- Quilt-quality 100% cotton for shields and bags. Again, colorful, pretty, bright prints that will hide stains and none of the prints

mentioned above. Any size larger than 9" x 11" can be used for shields and for bags the piece must be at at least 11" x 28".

Fabric needs to be prewashed and ironed. No need to cut your donations to size, we will do that.

- We are always in need of hotel soaps and 1/2" - 3/4" twill tape or grosgrain ribbon for the bag ties.

- Any monetary donation is much appreciated. We need to purchase PUL (moisture barrier fabric), panties, snaps, washcloths

and Ziplock bags to complete the kits.

We thank you for your support of Days for Girls and hope to see you next month. Contact Pam Ehrhardt (pam@lastingpiece.

com, phone at 351-6531) or Linda Kahlbaugh ([email protected], phone at 330-8140) with any questions or suggestions.

Note: It is the policy of the Guild to

charge $5 to visitors attending our

monthly guild meeting when we have

a national speaker presenting. The

past few years we have been lax in

doing so. At the August board meet-

ing this was discussed and it was de-

cided that at future meetings, we will

again be doing this. This is not to

deter guests from coming to our meet-

ings, but rather to help with the cost of

bringing in a national speaker.
