Our Grand Knight’s ReportMy Brother Knights,

Well, September is upon us and that meansthe end of Summer and more importantlythe beginning of our busiest time of year. This is where all of you, my brothers, becomea very essential part. Pope Benedict XVI wrote onhis encyclical on charity that “I must give to othersnot only something that is my own, but my veryself; I must personally be present in my gift.”

His statement truly reflects the core of the charitablework of the Knights of Columbus, the giving of ourselvesthrough volunteer service.

This year, I am counting on each and every oneof you to commit to volunteering at least 1-2 hoursof your time to 1 or more of the many organizationsor activities we support – whether it be helpingwith the Book Sale, Back Pack Buddies, Tootsie RollDrive, Soccer and Basketball Challenges, Doo Wop,Monthly Rosary, Placing of Flags at Cemetery forVeterans Day, Pancake Breakfasts, Beaver BarBreakfast, Christmas Party and Murder MysteryDinner.

I would also like to add a few more volunteeringopportunities this year that will focus on our youthand their families, who will be the hope for thefuture of our council. I will be working with FatherEd, Principal Martin, the Parish Council, our CCDand other youth groups this month to look foropportunities to combine our students, parish families, and the community with our efforts.

Some of the ideas I will be sharing is our helpingwith the Parish Picnic a great time for us to minglewith the younger generation, having them help us

with packing the goods to be put in the backpacksfor Backpack Buddies, collecting Coats for Coatsfor Kids, joining us at our Monthly Rosary andsocial, helping with set up for our Book Sale,as well as a Family night at a Pelicans gamein the Spring.

Did you know that there are actual benefits forolder adults to engage with the younger generation? It allows us to share life lessons and to promoteour faith and on the flip side it allows our youthto share new ways of looking at things. For bothyoung and older adults, volunteering gives a senseof accomplishment, confidence and purpose.Volunteering also keeps the brain active and promotesphysical activity, something we don’t see that muchof with our youth of today!

This year I would like to suggest a Frequent Volunteerpoints system – much like a Frequent Flyer Milesprogram. We will have sign-up sheets for all theevents and for the individual that contributes themost hours in a month they will be given the choiceof a free ticket to one of our Social Events orsome Knights of Columbus swag. So all I ask isthat you pick a couple of events that you are passionateabout and commit to sharing your time and talents.

Remember as a group there is nothing we cannotdo!

In September, we will resume the recitation of the rosary on the third Thursday of each month. The date forSeptember is the 19th. The rosary will be recited in the Church starting at 7:00PM, with a guest speaker andrefreshments following immediately afterwards in PAC Hall.

Our guest speaker will be Father Cristopher Beyou, our Parochial Vicar. Wives and guests are invited and especiallywelcomed! Let's get this new year off to a good start with a hardy and warm reception for Father. Rememberthe date 09/19/19, 7:00PM

St. Vincent de Paul was a great apostle of charity, and brought a greatrevival of the priesthood in the 17th century. He was born near Dax inthe Landes (France) in 1581. As a young priest he was captured byMoorish pirates who carried him to Africa. He was sold into slavery, butfreed in 1607 when he converted his owner. He founded a religiousCongregation under the title of Priests of the Mission or Lazarists (nowknown as Vincentians), and he bound them by a special way to undertakethe apostolic work of charity; he sent them to preach missions, especiallyto the ignorant peasants of that time, and to establish seminaries. St.Vincent worked tirelessly to help those in need: the impoverished, thesick, the enslaved, the abandoned, the ignored. He died in 1660 at St.Lazarus's house, Paris. His motto: "God sees you."St. Vincent de Paul

What do they have in common?

CONNIE MACK - Mack played for the Washington Nationals, Buffalo Bisons, and PittsburghPirates during his 10-year career as a catcher; but he is more known for his over 50 years as amanager, compiling records for the most managerial wins (3,731), losses (3,948) and gamesmanaged (7,679). He won five World Series titles – the third most by any manager - coachingthe Philadelphia Athletics to championship wins in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, and 1930. He waselected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York in 1937. Connie MackStadium, The Philadelphia Athletics and the Phillies old ball park was named after him.

RON GUIDRY - Called “Louisiana Lightning” and “Gator,” Guidry played his entire 14-year careerwith the New York Yankees, from 1975 to 1988. In 1978, he won the AL Cy Young Award after going25-3, while posting a 1.74 ERA, and was elected to the All-Star team. Over his career, he was a4-time All-Star (1978, 1979, 1982, 1983), a two-time World Series champion, and had his numberretired by the New York Yankees.

GIL HODGES - Hodges played a majority of his 18-year career with the Brooklyn and Los AngelesDodgers from 1943 to 1961, and then finished his career with the New York Mets in 1963. Duringthat span, Hodges was an 8-time All-Star (1949-1955, 1957), won two World Series titles in 1955and 1959, and hit four home runs in one game on Aug. 31, 1950. He went on to manage, and win aWorld Series with the “Amazin’ Mets” in 1969. His number is retired and he was inducted into theNew York Mets Hall of Fame

JOHNNY EVERS - One of baseball’s most famous poems – “Baseball’s Sad Lexicon” – is about one ofthe game’s fabled double-play combination: Tinker to Evers to Chance. A three time World Serieschampion (1907, 1908, 1914), National League MVP (1914) and Hall of Famer, Johnny Evers playedsecond base for the Chicago Cubs, Boston Braves and Philadelphia Phillies during his 27-year career.During WWI he organized baseball games for the troops

GEORGE HERMAN “BABE” RUTH - is the epitome of legendary baseball players. At one point, Ruthheld major league records for career home runs (714), home runs in a single season (60), RBIs(2,213), slugging percentage (.690), on-base plus slugging (1.164), and bases on balls (2,062). Hewas also a seven-time World Series champion (1915, 1916, 1918, 1923, 1927, 1928, 1932), a12-time AL home run leader, and a member of the first inducted class into the Baseball Hall ofFame. These only scratch the surface of his accomplishments.

DANNY MURTAUGH - In his rookie season, Murtaugh led the National League in stolen bases, but his career was soon interrupted after he joined the U.S. Army to fight during World War II.After returning in 1946 and ending his career as a player in 1951, Murtaugh went on to managethe Pittsburgh Pirates to two World Series championships (1960, 1971) and posted a .540 winningpercentage.

ED WALSH - During his 14-year career primarily with the Chicago White Sox, Walsh posted alifetime ERA of 1.82, which is still a major league record, and he is one of two pitchers since1901 to win 40 games in a single season when he did so in 1908. He led the majors instrikeouts in two seasons (1908, 1911), won a World Series title in 1906, and pitched a no-hitter on Aug. 27, 1911. He also has the second-best WHIP (walks and hits per inningspitched) of all-time at 0.9996 behind Addie Joss. Walsh was inducted into the Hall of Fame in1946.

So, what do they all have in common? Great, even legendary players / managers?

Yes, but each of them - was a KNIGHT!(and others not mentioned here because of space limitations)
