In Memoriam

We are sorry to report that Dagne Gullak, wife of John Gullak, died on December 27, 2002 after a long illness.

We extend our sympathy to John and his family.

NEWS FROM OUR SISTER CLUB IN AUSTRALIA

We received our annual Christmas card from the Coventries.

They tell us they had a very successful show this year, and for once it didn't have to compete with football games so the attendance was up.

They are busy offering classes in lapidary with two on cabochons, two on silversmithing and one each on faceting and painting.

Their club membership is now 200

Time to get serious about our show. Please call early and sign up for your show working time. Call Bonnie Andrade at 1-926-672-4393. This is her cell phone. Remember she works during the day, so the best time to reach her is in the evening and that's when she should have her master list. Or call any of the chairmen who will sign you up during their worker time. There is a list at the end of this column.

Our newest caster is Rich Davis who has been taking lessons from the Rigors.

This column started as a lapidary hint column and has gotten away from that. Our members seem to know all the tricks but for some of the new ones, we will try a couple hints. I haven't tried this one, but read recently about using superglue to add pieces or wax to wax. It takes awhile to bond so you have a little wiggle room. It burns off in the oven.

Where do you store your cabochons to keep

2

?

January 2003

them from getting scratched? One methods is to attach them to freezer tape in a plastic bag.

One I like better is to purchase the plastic sleeves for slides and put a cabochon in each sleeve. Easy to see and remove. Buy a binder to hold the plastic.

If you get epoxy on your fingers, try some mineral oil to remove it. This is wild stuff, so be careful rather than sorry. Acetone will also dissolve it, but it is rather hard on the skin.

Jamie deSpain's mother recently had a stroke and is now in a rest home. Jamie opens the shop on Thursdays.

Unfortunately our missing money has not been returned. Sadly even the coffee kitty was broken into destroying the cute drawer that came with it. And for what? There is rarely more than $2 in it.

We have had a circuit problem with the wiring to the library. This was another job Horace Robertson took care of. And recently one of our new members was busy sanding down a saw In preparation for painting it. Sorry I didn't catch his whole name .. Thanks, Charlie Please remember to sign in so I can figure out who you are.

Maybe you noticed some more boxes of rocks at the shop. These are from the estate of Ednah Antunovich whose son donated them to the club. Ednah was one of those members talented to do everything from holding offices to teaching techniques. She was even shop Foreman at one time ..

Wasn't that Christmas dinner great? I especially enjoyed the various cranberry salads. I never seem to think to make jello salads and I love them .. Thanks to the ladies who did the birdsMary Bufton, Mary Howell, me and a gentleman who took over when his wife got sick-Arland Stokes.

And the silent auction taken over by Jane Panico for the evening offered specialties from the recent estate sale. AnneMarie Kochendorfer made the table decorations and Dolores Barnes and her husband did the ceiling decorations and table set up. Thanks kitchen helpers.

Charlette Snyder did a wonderful job directing the kitchen crew. New shop Foreman Beth Farmer spent a few days in Hawaii at Christmas time. She said although the trip had been planned for some time, it seemed a good idea to move on before United decided to ignore frequent flyer miles. She has family over there. We reminded her that they don't have a great variety of rocks there.

~ Wanted: Project "Firsts" Jane Panico

Do you remember your first cabochon? What about that first piece of jewelry or carving? The MGSCV is trying to get together a Junior and Beginner lapidary display case for the March Show. Junior members are welcome to submit anything they have made or cabbed for a junior case. Since there are so few juniors in our club it would be nice to be able to show other juniors what they could do, too!

Please submit your first cabochon or any other "first items" to Jane Panico by February 1, 2003 to be submitted in this showcase. I am usually at the shop on Thursdays and Saturdays. When you submit your item please enclose what material it is and your name in a zip lock bag or box. Examples of first items by beginners could be spheres, carvings, jewelry (wax or fabrication), first intarsia piece or anything you make out of rock. It must be your first attempt at making the item. I am looking for a varied case of items to represent what beginners and Juniors can do.

Help us create a special and unique showcase to attract new members of all ages to our club. If

you have any questions please feel free to email me or call.

REcYCLIN&

We had a very generous example of recycling at our Christmas dinner. Everyone knows that Doc Buschke makes a tree of hand carved turquoise trees to be raffled off at the annual Christmas dinner. This year's winner read our Petrograph (he's a member) at his home in the Sierras and decided it was a good time to revisit old friends at our Christmas dinner.

And he bought a bunch of tickets and he won the tree and then guess what.? Bill Scott donated the tree back to the club to make more money for the club. Our take for the raffle was $177. We thank you sincerely Bill and come visit us again. He always comes back to work at the show in March.

10 Ways to Harm a Club (Bonnie Andrade brought this to our attention.

Thankyou, Bonnie!) 1. Don't come to the meetings. 2. If you do come, always come late.

PAtrnnr::lnh

4 January 2003

3. If the weather doesn't suit you, don't even think of coming

4. If you do attend a meeting, find fault with the work of the officers or other members.

5. Never accept an office, as it is easier to criticize than to do things.

6. Nevertheless, get sore if you are not appointed to a committee but, if you are, don't attend the meeting.

7. If asked by the chairman to give your opinion regarding some important matter, tell him you have nothing to say. After the meeting, tell everyone how things ought to be done.

B. Do nothing more than absolutely necessary, but, when other members roll up their sleeves and willingly and unselfishly use their ability to help things along, howl that the organization is being run by a clique.

9. Start rumors whenever possible. Note than the organization never did anything for you.

10. Don't bother about getting new members. Let the clique do it.

Let it be the goal of every member to fully enjoy his/her club and to give the added effort to make it even better. Your officers alone cannot do the job. It has to come from all the members as well. Don't fall into the 10 traps mentioned above. This is our club. Let's make it the best.
