Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The solemnity of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not observed as a holy day of obligation in 2016, according to the USCCB’s Liturgical calendar. Our Monday 8:00 a.m. Mass will celebrate this solemnity. The Assumption became a feast day celebrated by the Church every year on August 15th. What it brings to mind is the height to which the Church has elevated this special woman. The teaching that, at the end of her earthly course, Mary was as sumed into heavenly glory, body and soul, was dogmatically defined by Pius XII on November 1, 1950 in Munificentissimus Deus. Mary’s passage into Heaven is called the “Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. The Assumption of Mary has two pur poses. The first is that we celebrate the happy departure of Mary from this physical life on Earth. The second purpose is the assumption of her body into Heaven. We firmly believe that from the first moment of her conception, Mary was free of all sin, including Original Sin, by a special favor of almighty God. The Archangel Gabriel recognized her as “full of grace,” “blessed among women” and “one with the Lord.” Mary died when she was 59 years old, in A.D. 48. The apostles took her body to a tomb near the one that Jesus was laid in. They covered her with a white shroud and laid her to rest in the tomb. Jesus came to her and took her body and soul into heaven to be with Him.

Prayer for the Assumption of Mary

Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise, for all life and all holiness come from you.

In the plan of your wisdom she who bore Christ in her womb was raised body and soul in glory to be with Him in heaven.

May we follow her example in reflecting Your holiness and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

This Jubilee Year of Mercy bids us share our own expe-rience of Jesus’ mercy with those on what Pope Francis calls the “peripheries”—people who feel marginalized, even unwelcome—inviting them to come home. But with all this mercy, why today’s mayhem? “Do you think I have come to establish peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division” (Luke 12:51). Jesus “breaks down” those “breakups” in painful detail—parents, chil-dren, even in-laws. “Against” appears eight times in five verses. Jeremiah faced death for bearing witness (Jeremiah 38:4). Can’t we bear at least a small share of the sometimes merciless cost of sharing mercy? The Letter to the Hebrews warns us, keep your “eyes fixed on Jesus” and “so great a cloud of witnesses,” lest we “grow weary and lose heart” as we run “the race that lies before us” (Hebrews 12:1–3). After all, “for the sake of the joy that lay before him,” Jesus “endured the cross” (12:2). Can’t we endure our small crosses for the sake of sharing mercy?

RCIA SPONSORS NEEDED We are now blessed to have several adults who are in the RCIA process. An important part of this process is the per-sonal touch of a sponsor from our congregation to move alongside of them during this time. Basically, a sponsor is a friend. One who is supportive and welcoming to the new candidate as they learn about the Catholic faith. A person who will be invitational and include them in their everyday lives and events. Do you recognize these gifts in yourself? If you do, we need you to share them! A sponsor is a vital part of the process and a link to the social and spiritual life of our church. The sponsor will attend the RCIA meetings after the 9am mass. They are not expected to be experts in Catholicism and know everything there is about the faith. We as a team certainly do not. What we hope to do is evangelize, which is an important part of this pre-sent period of “Inquiry” and Precatechumenate. We share our stories! We share about Jesus’ forgiveness and uncondi-tional love”. As we share, we learn more about our faith and our personal relationship with Jesus. It is a fun, interesting and vital ministry. We laugh, cry, celebrate and learn together in a social and spiritual environ-ment. In the near future you will be hearing first hand from some of our past sponsors and their experiences. If you have any interest in learning about the ministry and hearing more about it, would you please contact me in the church office, 949-494-9701 ext. 113. Blessings, Donna Beam
