“As a graduate of the City School District of
Albany, Union College, and Harvard Law
School, I’m glad the city’s schools are educating
my children. I am particularly pleased with the
program at Montessori because it encourages
self motivation and allows children to work
at their own pace.”Diane Hester Brown, MMS parent

and curriculum
of Dr. Maria
Montessori, a
renowned
physician and
educator.
MONTESSORIMontessoriMagnet Schoolmission:To create and supportthe development of aresponsible, culturallydiverse community ofindividual learnersthrough diligent work inand adherence to theMontessori philosophy and method.
What makes a Montessorieducation unique?
In a Montessori classroom, students experience aholistic, child-centered program that has at its core aprofound respect for the individual childand an understanding that each child isunique and develops at his or her own pace.Children are encouraged to choose and work withdevelopmentally appropriate materials in a prepared, supportive learning environment where success is
built-in and where the surroundings are bothorderly and attractive. In this setting, learning becomes its own reward, andchildren are evaluated on the basis of
their individual progress, not in compari-son to their peers.
One of the most distinguished features of the Montessori educational
method is its extensive use ofmanipulative materials. These multisensory, sequential, and self-correcting
materials provide concrete learning experiences and facilitate the students’
grasp of abstract ideas.
Another unique aspect of the curriculum is the manner in which all subjects are integrated with one
another to create a universal—orcosmic education.
■ Mixed-age group classrooms from Pre-K to2, which promote cooperative learning, peerteaching, and interaction.
■ Prepared classroom environments to recog-nize and respond to the range of interests andcapabilities of students by offering engaging,hands-on and self-paced learning and researchactivities. This is offered in all of the basic cur-ricular areas as well as in French, music, art, physical education, and practical life skills.
■ The school-wide study of Frenchlanguage and culture through instruction, programs and celebrations.
■ A Comprehensive Literacy Programdesigned to promote the development ofreading, spelling, listening, and writing acrossthe curriculum.
■ A harmonious atmosphere that provides students with the skills and knowledge tobuild a community and manage conflict andchange in a peaceful manner.
■ Science materials designed to increase stu-dents’ interest in and knowledge of science.
■ An Effective Classroom HelpersOrganization (ECHO) comprised of parentand community volunteers who work in theclassroom with individual students to supportand develop literacy skills.
■ Teachers who undergo intensive training to earn credentials in the Montessorimethod and who serve as guides to discovery. The faculty and staff are dedicated to meetingthe needs of their students.
Unique features that set MontessoriMagnet School apart from more traditionalapproaches to teaching and learning:
■ Teaching assistants in each classroom.
■ Membership in the American MontessoriSociety, which serves as a resource toensure the authenticity of our Montessoriprogram.
■ Partnership with business and communityorganizations.
■ An after-school extended-day program, sponsored by the Jewish Community Center.
■ A new state-of-the-art school to welcomestudents in September 2005.
In this setting, learning becomes its own reward.
