MONTENEGRIN CINEMASearching for a Place in the Sun... Through the history, Montenegrin cinema is marked by many famous and prominent authors (in Montenegro were born, and sometimes worked there authors such as Dusan Vukotic, Veljko Bulajic, Zivko Nikolic, etc.); authentic films which easily communicated with audience wherever they were shown; many collaborations with foreign co-producers;... and, then, everything was put to sleep. It took time and new energy for finding the way how to establish own film production.

The past ten years were very exciting for Montenegrin national cinema.

At the start of the previous decade, from Ministry of culture of Montenegro came new initiative and funding plan which in short term had its results, so the new productions have started and the films were made. In the meantime, more and more new film talents are being educated which led to need for bigger engagement of the whole Montenegrin community. The budget for films continually increases, and something that is important to emphasise is the fact that in all films by Montenegrin authors the great number of talent and crew from region and beyond is participating, which our film production confirms as inherently multicultural, intercultural, cross-cultural product.

It was very interesting to follow the past decade in Montenegrin film, for many reasons. New authors, new film staff; communication with own film legacy, but also the attempts to be in balance with wider film community; establishing of the new standards in rather chaotic circumstances; struggles with many setbacks and lack of understanding, but an enormous enthusiasm to conquer the film, also, and above all.

Ever increasing number of foreign crews are coming to shoot in Montenegrin exciting locations (mountains, Adriatic sea, vast beaches, old urban entities, etc.); new ambitious and prestigious infrastructural projects are in the works; and the new Cinematography law, which will ensure new encouraging framework for further growth and visibility, is being prepared. The films which will have their premiere this year, and films which are in pre-production, also, announce the decade of some kind of Montenegrin film renaissance. We are inviting you to jointly participate in these matters.The future is in the hand’s reach...

On the next pages we will represent you some short overview of the films which were Montenegrin production and coproduction in the last few years, and some of the projects which are in the pre-production phase.

Welcome to Montenegro!

SynopsisThis comedy is based on a highly succesfull theatre play from the 80s: ’’Jesi li to došao da me vidiš’’(’’Did you come to see me?’’) written by Miodrag Karadžić. The set is placed in a small montenegrian village, in the summer of 1968. We follow the visit of land surveyor and his wife and the reaction of the villagers to their arrival. At the sam time we follow the conflict between the two families, Obad and Cvrkota that are not speaking to eachother for more than 20 years. Ironicaly, their chilldren fell in love with eachother, and not only that, the daughter is pregnant.It is the time of change and liberation.The year in which two worlds will collide: the hippie movement, freedom of love, sex, versus rural closed system, in which the individual is hidden behind the collective thought.

Synopsis

Jagoda is a bright urban girl. Her parents are divorced, and her brother lives abroad. It is summer; she is visiting her extended family in the countryside, seeking time and space to prepare for her university exams. Slowly, she establishes a bond with her cousin Zdravko, who runs a farm with his parents in the declining small village in the mountains of Montenegro, high above the sea. His life revolves around vineyards, orchards, domestic animals and the peculiar elderly members of the family. Zdravko has no siblings and feels pressure because the future of the community rests on him. He is building a new house for himself but, at 39, he is still single. There are no young women in Zdravko’s village. A flashback shows him as a teenage boy infatuated with the East Ger-man ice skater Katarina Witt. More than twenty years later, he has hardly moved on – her poster still hangs on the wall above his bed. But there is no sign of any real romance in his life.

A Matter of Will

Synopsis

Summer is hot and days are long… Never longer if you are in a weight loss camp for children. The camp is located in a seaside resort, far from a city, and it’s been led by a man known as the Instructor. He is preparing the choreography with the children, which will celebrate the finale of the programme. In the slow atmosphere of the summer end, we meet a smallish group of different characters in this microcosm, who have different motives, desires and interests: a group of chubby boys and girls who dream of chocolate and love interests from across the hall, authoritarian instructor and his ideology grounded in “Men’s Health” literature. This is the story of disharmony, of a society that lives in the hazy hope that things will change, witnessing that everything just repeats endlessly.

Hotel Boka

Synopsis

Through a fairy-tale life story of local musician Mirko, the film unfolds the groundbreaking historical and civilisation moments of the 20th century in both Montenegro and Europe: from the times of Austria-Hungary’s foundation, to the establishment of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SHS), up to the massive 1979 earthquake. This is when Boka Hotel disappears, along with an era. A music chapel, headed by young clarinettist Mirko, has been hired to perform at the Boka Hotel’s opening ceremony in the town of Herceg Novi. Europe is facing the outbreak of an all-out war, and its reflections are being felt in the glamorous hotel, too. Sports and architectural icon Momcilo Tapavica introduces young musicians to the secret of hertz minute – a way to reaching a kind of perfection. Mirko, during a life-and-death struggle, reaches the hertz minute and gets rewarded with eternal youth. This turns out to be also his curse, for he becomes witness to and a player in family alienation, but also in all the changes resulting from war, politics and civilization pooled into Herceg Novi, as a metaphorical setting for the entire Europe of the time.

The last game of the butterfly

Synopsis

After thirty years, accomplished theatre director Victor is returning from Vienna to Montenegro. His longtime avoided return is inevitable this time - it was the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great poet and ruler Petar II Petrovic Njegos and Victor was invited to direct unique multi-medial performance in his honour. Reunion with the land of his origins won’t just breathe life into the mystical nocturnal event but also bring memories of his childhood, prematurely lost parents, as well as childhood love story which would spark again in those summer days in Cetinje.

Under the Bridge, Between the Rocks

Synopsis

Whoever has seen me in a dream, then no doubt, he has seen me.

An old man

In the center of the city, under the bridge, the corpse is found. Soon we will learn that it is well known member of a criminal organization. In a very difficult day for him, the police detective has to investigate the crime. The anger outbursts and problems with the media are his everyday routine, lately. As it is not already enough, in this particular day he has to deal with the bank which charges him for not paying his debt, his relationship with the girlfriend is falling apart and he is not able to attend his daughter’s ballet class.

The first results of the autopsy arrive, and detective, along with his partner, by following the usual pattern, begins to slowly decipher the scheme of the last night’s crime. His partner, father of five boys, is interested in everything else, but in the investigation, procedures, same routine of wandering through the same streets of the same town, and the one of the hottest days of summer doesn’t help either.

Suddenly, one call changes the game and its rules. Everything changes. The old saying that during the investigation detective finds himself now gets the new, twisted meaning.

Montenegro Film Festival of the Mediterranean – MOFFEM is a biennial film event, held in Kotor in September. The youngest film festival in Montenegro has succedeed, with its first short 2012 edition, both in positioning itself as the manifestation of special importance for the UNESCO-protected city of Kotor and in becoming one of the cultural leaders of the Mediterranean region. Various festival segments (competition, documentary/short films, Cinemagora, Focus, Homage), reflect innovativeness and originality in its very focus on the rich, yet neglected, auteur film pro-duction of the Mediterranean. The main festival awards include financial prizes.

The 2nd edition will be held from 30th August-6th September 2014.

The Marina Abramović Community Center, Obod, Cetinje is an important project that will contribute to the economic growth not only of Cetinje, but of Montenegro as a whole.

The Obod factory complex covers an area of 133, 000 square metres. It consists of 28 huge industrial halls that were once used for manufacturing refrigerators. A small park is located at the heart of the complex. There is a dining hall that can seat up to 10,000 people. In the annex next to the dining hall there is one smaller complex consisting of a reception hall, conference hall, as well as a small auditorium.

The mission of MACCOC is to transform this factory complex into a community centre that will have multi-functional uses.

1. MACCOC will have a technology park, a gas facility (which already exists there), business incubators, small-trade clusters, a distribution centre, a fairground area, a hotel, shopping centre (that will include a convenience store, shops, a restaurant, a ten-pin bowling club, etc.);

2. MACCOC will have a printing press;

3. MACCOC will have production houses and a film studio;

4. MACCOC will have a centre for TV, radio and Internet broadcasting;

5. MACCOC will have premises for the production and presentation of art, dance, theatre, film, video, music and opera;

6. MACCOC will create theatre spaces, aimed at local and international theatre productions, for shows and rehearsals;

7. MACCOC will be dedicated to creating and presenting interdisciplinary public debates on various art courses, culture, science, technology, spirituality and architecture;

8. MACCOC will devote one of its factory halls to a permanent collection of artworks in various media, produced at the “Obod” location.

9. MACCOC will host an international exchange programme of performance artists, writers, musicians, dancers, actors and scientists;

10. MACCOC will support research programmes related to performance studies with full access to a video archive;

11. MACCOC will cooperate with universities and the local community, as well as with colleges and universities worldwide on projects and activities of mutual interest. At this moment, world famous architect Rem Koolhaas, and his team from OMA office in New York are working on master plan for MACCOC. This master plan is expected to be finished within the next two months.
