FROM THE ACTING PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Friends of Monte,

Whether by chance or expert design, events in this week’s calendar have stirred a feeling of real alignment. Spirit Week and Design Week both coincide in the lead up to Father’s Day.

Design Week is a significant affair. It connects our students with the innovative work of current practitioners and showcases student work, through projects demonstrating contemporary design solutions and utilising current technologies.

Whilst the standard is impressive, and the levels of creativity high, good design is a powerful thing wherever it is found. Design like the Sydney Opera House is not only striking, but the icon provides an enduring reminder of human ingenuity at play. Outstanding design is timeless, like that of the simple safety pin or Band Aid where form is so fit-for purpose, that it appears unable to be improved.

In the work of the designer, we encounter a powerful manifestation of humans as co-creators of the world we inhabit. A touch of genius is always encountered in the innovative, but it has always been that necessity is the mother of invention. Aesop’s fable of The Crow and the Pitcher, where the pebbles dropped in one by one raised the water level so the crow could drink, taught us that.

Through great design, convenience and comfort is made possible. We can be made more productive, safer, independent and sustainable through better design, which is wonderful, but we can also be seduced. Drawn in by the aesthetic, physicality and amenity of some pieces they become “must haves”. Some items, so beautiful through their design, mean we can be tricked into

believing we become more credible, more powerful by owning them. Further, great design can even lure us into thinking we are immortal, that there is nothing we cannot design our way out of.

In essence, however, design is about creative problem solving and responding very specifically to need. In good design, by people who are designing for good, we see the transformative power of human ingenuity. As such, there is always something of the spirit of one human person, responding to the needs of another, embodied a design.

In Spirit Week, amidst all the fun, there has been an opportunity for us to consider how we respond as members of this community. It is a time to bring to the fore, House Spirit, centred on virtues that are always transformative and worth celebrating. Leading up to Father’s Day, the particular virtues of courage (Xavier) and fidelity (McGuirk) arose in morning Chapel. Both were most fitting because good and loving fathers, and father figures, are men who have the courage to care deeply and stand by their children with enduring fidelity. The prayer offered was for all fathers – that they continue to be blessed and strengthened in their special role and enjoy a wonderful Sunday knowing that they are appreciated!

In the coming week, may we all respond more fully to God’s invitation to design a better future, through the spirit of Mercy.

Warm Regards, Allyson Mascarenhas Acting Principal Deputy Principal Curriculum

SR LECIA’S THOUGHTS

Sister Lecia Coombe RSM

22nd Sunday Ordinary Time Year C 1 AUGUST 2019

Dear Readers,

On this first Sunday of September, we always celebrate Fathers’ Day. Though not a liturgical Feast, it is joyous occasion for all, including our Church congregations. Referring to our First Reading Sirach 3:17-20, 28-29, I am led by its advice, to describe a loving father and an arrogant father.

Wouldn’t we rejoice having a father who gently carries out his business, a humble man who finds favour with the Lord? On the other hand, wouldn’t we resent being saddled with a proud father, who has allowed an evil growth to take root in him, rendering him incapable of thinking with a heart attuned to our real needs?

Of course, we all must examine ourselves on these same issues, whoever we are, and realise we are all poor, needy children; but Psalm 67 consoles us with the conviction, that God in His goodness, has made a home for the poor.

St Paul, in Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24, admits that we cannot reason our way out of our gloomy darkness, nor escape our problems of dislocation - lack of trust and hope. Our only security lies in God who calls us to Himself, and in Jesus, the Mediator who brings a new covenant.

The Gospel Luke 14:1,7-14 is packed with interesting reading. Once again, Jesus treats us to a parable springing from his own recent observation of people at a banquet, hosted by a leading Pharisee. As a result, He suggests guests take the lowest seat, to avoid the embarrassment of the host asking him to give up his seat to another, or to enjoy the honour of being told “My friend, move up higher!” Jesus reminds his hearers: “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” Finally, Jesus speaks to his host himself, suggesting that when he puts on a party, not to ask those who will repay his courtesy by inviting him in return, but to invite the poor and those who cannot pay him back. If he does that, he will be fortunate, because repayment will be made to him when the virtuous rise again.

Imagine the pain of being embarrassed by your host. How much more shameful would it be to hear God tell you to step aside for someone He favours more highly than you? Jesus uses ordinary good manners to remind us that what God values in us may be very different from what we value. Revisiting Sirach’s warnings against arrogant pride may remind us that it is only the humble, sensitive person who can grasp the wisdom of God. If your time permits, please ponder prayerfully today’s three Readings in their entirety.

May all our fathers be honoured and blessed today, and always. Please enjoy the song on the following page: No 61 in my Album In God’s Presence.

"BE GENTLE CARRYING OUT YOUR BUSINESS. YOU WILL BE BETTER LOVED THAN A LAVISH GIVER" CF. SIRACH 3:17- 20

Schools Debating Network (SDN)Our Friday night competition was another successful event, with six of our teams winning against St Pius X College. The topic area for this round was Media, which had our teams thinking critically about both traditional media and social media. We have seen great improvement and skill-development across all our teams in this competition.

Sydney Buses is considering removing the 7:55am Ridge Street connection between buses 774 Northwood to Milsons Pt and the 662 Riverview to North Sydney.

This change is due to take effect on Ridge St near Miller St at 7:55am (where the 774 service is to wait for the 662 service where Students can Transfer to continue to Milsons Point).

Previously bus 774 would wait for bus 662 to transport students to Milsons Point. However, after monitoring this transport site, our records indicate that there are no students utilising this connection service. This has been taken into into consideration along with the recent road redevelopment, causing this waiting connection to cause excess traffic congestion in the peak morning period.

Please notify your daughter of this proposed change.

The proposed change is earmarked for 8 September 2019.

Should this proposed change raise any concerns/objections, or you are aware of this service still being required by students, please contact:
