As I edit the footnotes on each lot of this year's Montana Supreme, the thought struck me that this letter itself is a footnote to the sale. Welcome to what may be the best collection of quality ever offered at Supreme. While we are down on numbers, each lot is stacked with the genetics, pedigree and performance to make a difference in any herd and certainly represents the consignors and indeed Montana in Supreme fashion. The history of success this sale has enjoyed is based on positive results of past purchases. Those results have been made possible by the mating decisions of their new owners but also the fact that our consignors have always offered their best from their respective programs.

Our nation's cowherd is at historic lows and the demand for quality Angus cattle, commercial and purebred, is excellent domestically and internationally. Montana is again the Number One Angus state in the nation, a result of commercial customers seeking superior proven genetics that will add pounds to their calf crop. It's a fact bulls from quality females sell well and contribute more to the advancement of the Breed and indeed the industry. Annually, Supreme will feature a few elite Pathfinder females from across the state. That division is highlighted by a third generation Pathfinder from Cory Poser. This 878 daughter has already produced one bull that sold in the Hilltop's sale for $4500, a daughter that sold at the NWSS and two daughters have been retained. Van Nice Angus Ranch was the breeder of the dam of Lot 2 and the Reddins purchased her as a bred heifer at the Paws Up dispersion sale. Dam combines 234D with EXT and traces to a Vermilion female. After he picked her out, I let him know that he fed her maternal brother last year at Midland Bull Test. That maternal brother, Lot 498 out of HA Image Maker, had a MBT index of 105% and sold to Deep Creek Ranch in Idaho for $4250.Lot 3 has phenomenal maternal power in her background. Starting on the top side, the dam of this heifer's sire, Sitz Emma E 4181, has 5 daughters working in 4 herds with NR of 102 on 14 progeny and IMF 5 @ 107. Her '04 heifer sold at Supreme to Marvin Rehbein and made Pathfinder on her third calf in his herd. 4181's 2010 bull calf is on test at Midland now.The dam of Lot 3's maternal sire, Paws Up Blackcap 2176, has weaned 6 calves @ 106, plus twins this year that weaned at 771# and 603# 205 day wts. on milk and grass. We have always been proud of the quality offered by our breeders at Montana Supreme, but when Shelley Brown called about her consignment, the word elite came to mind. Produced in the Coleman herd near Charlo, MT this incredible donor came to LB Farms in 2009 when Shelley and Lance purchased her from Skalkaho Creek Ranch. As a member of the famous Miss Wix cow family this highly productive donor is responsible for $75,000 in progeny sales and averaged 29 transferable embryos in her last two flushes alone. Volumes have been written about her Dam and Grand Dam, and we will not repeat that.

Noteworthy however is the fact this Rainmaker daughter has produced a $9500 BR Midland son that sold to Ox Bow Ranch in the 2004 MBT Sale, and other sons have sold to Karl Tyler and Aaron Strommen. A flush sister to this female sold for $12,000 in a past NILE sale and a brother was the 4th high selling bull at the 2004 NWSS for $11,000, but the real treasures of this female are her daughters retained at Coleman, Skalkaho and LB Farms.

As first time consignors to Montana Supreme we welcome Gary and Phyllis Eliasson of Currant Creek Angus. Assembling one of the largest purebred Angus operations in Montana, Gary has developed a powerful herd bull battery and purchased some elite donor females as cornerstones to build on.

The grand dam of Lot 10 is just one of those females, bred in the high performance Jorgensen program in South Dakota she is also the dam of the high selling bull at $7000 and high selling bred heifer at $9500 in Currant Creek's 2009 sale. The donor dam of Lot 29 was purchased by Gilbreath Enterprises, Siebert Farms and Dana Williams for $7750 as a feature of the 2007 Montana Supreme Sale. Prior to that time she was one of the highest producing females ever at Yadon Angus. In 2003 she raised the high indexing heifer calf at Yadons who sold through Supreme to Daniel and Son in Texas. 2004 raised a 994 lb. bull calf, raised twin heifer calves who combined to weigh 1300 lbs. at weaning in 2005, weaned a 1065 lb. bull calf in 2006 and in 2007 weaned a 856 lb. heifer calf by Image Maker that sold to Younkin and 3210 for $5250 at Supreme. All told, she weaned 8 calves in 7 years (bulls and heifers) with an average 205 day weight of 768 lbs and an average calving interval of 366 days.

This Pathfinder combines the Black Belle and Bluebird families and traces to Traveler 71 and Equator.

Selling the choice of these two Emblazon heifer calves. A full sister sold to Tom McBee in Tennessee as a sale feature in the 2010 Daughters of the Big Sky Sale.

We purchased our foundation Eileen through Hinman's Advantage Cow Sale in 1999, a maternal sister to HA Eileen 148. Lot 28's dam is a perfect uddered, phenotypically correct cow with lots of volume. We have retained three maternal sisters in our program. A maternal brother to the dam is one of our current herd sires with his first progeny ratioing 103 at weaning.
