Farewell 4-H All

WELCOME TO THE SANTA CLARA COUNTY 4-H ENROLLMENT EDITION OF TIMELY TOPICS

Welcome to 4-H in Santa Clara County!

On behalf of the University of California, Cooperative Extension I extend a warm welcome to new families joining 4-H and to returning families. The 4-H Youth Development Program offers youth ages 5-19, several experiences where young people learn by doing. Kids participate in a variety of activities and projects in areas like health, science, agriculture, and civic engagement in a positive environment where they receive guidance from teens and adult mentors, and are encouraged to take on leadership roles.

The 4-H Youth Development Program has a bold goal to engage 10% of the youth population in Santa Clara County by 2025, which equals approximately 30,128 ethnic and racially diverse children and youth.

Last program year, the 4-H club program engaged 810 youth in the 4-H club program and 3,454 youth in afterschool and in-school 4-H programs. We increased by more than a 100% from the previous year. This year, we aim to continue with our growth goals while also increasing the number of volunteers in the program.

This is an exciting time to be a 4-H’er in Santa Clara County! Our youth continue to provide leadership to clubs, conferences, county events and camp. Young people in metropolitan areas have the opportunity to raise animals in five facilities in city, county or school district land in Cupertino, Santa Clara, Milpitas and two facilities in San Jose.

In 4-H children and youth have an excellent opportunity to learn 21st Century skills (e.g. critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and innovation, communication, collaboration, and public speaking).

In partnership with 4-H Volunteers, we have a wonderful opportunity to help children in their development by facilitating an understanding of themselves, the people around them and their world. Thank you to all 4-H volunteers who are committed to make this happen. This year holds great promise, and I look forward to what we will accomplish together.

4-H News in Santa Clara County

National Youth Science Day (NYSD) in Santa Clara County NYSD is an annual 4-H initiative to provide access to STEM education for all kids. The month long opportunity for kids to learn about STEM through high-quality, interactive activities takes place in October. 4-H has created National Youth Science Day, or NYSD, challenges for the past 10 years, past years challenges include Rockets to the Rescue in 2014 or Incredible Wearables in 2017.

This year the NYSD focus is on computer science. Google and West Virginia University Extension created a four-part challenge called Code Your World. Any volunteer, teacher, or club, can order a NYSD Kit that would provide them with the materials, and very detailed instructions that they would need to lead a NYSD event in their local area. Only one of the challenges requires a device, the other three are unplugged activities, meaning that no computer is needed to teach the computer science concepts! Descriptions of each challenges are below:

Youth members in Santa Clara County, that are also leaders in the California Computer Science Pathway Team, will be hosting a local National Youth Science Day for 4-H’ers and non 4-H’ers. The event will take place on Saturday, October 13 from 1:00 to 4:00 at Google in Mountain View! Anyone ages 8-19 is encouraged to come to this free, educational experience. No prior computer science knowledge necessary, beginners are encouraged to attend!

National 4-H’s goal is for over 150,000 kids across the nation to participate in Code Your World. To help maximize the amount of youth involved in this challenge, attendees of the October 13th NYSD event will have the opportunity to take a NYDS kit back to their local 4-H clubs, schools, etc.

To register, use the link in the flyer on the next page. For more information about National Youth Science Day, visit https://4-h.org/parents/national-youth-science-day/. (submitted by Fiona Reyes, CS Pathway team member)
