Informational Interview two-step Exercise

Identify someone and get an informational interview. When applying for a job refer to the challenges, issues, and person with whom you were speaking in your cover letter AND HOW YOU CAN HELP.

Use interviews as an extension of an informational interview and use that knowledge for future jobs at that company OR in the same industry.17

Job Seeker Pay It Forward Exercise

Materials: $100 bill, note card, envelope.

One technique thats useful in helping when trying to stop smoking is to have a visual representation that fuels motivation. After time, that motivation can move from external reminders to internal reminders and becomes a part of you. Heres an example of one way folks can try to remind themselves of why they need to stop smoking.

I need 2 volunteers. Before you raise your hands, theres 2 criteria. You MUST be trustworthy and willing to make a relationship that will last longer than this meeting, including with me. If theres a bunch of volunteers, choose the 2 who have been out of work the longest.

Sit next to each other. Capture their contact info.

Im going to give each of you $50. Nuts, but all I have is a $100 bill. Well

Rip $100 in half. Hand half to each person. You each have $50.

First person to get a job, send the $50 to the other with a note of encouragement.

2nd person. You now have a choice. You can keep the money and spend it if you need to, or you can pay it forward. You have to find two people to do the exercise with and pay it forward.

First person to get the job has it easier. They only have to mail their half. 2nd person has it harder. They need to make a decision, and if they pay it forward, they need to pass both halves of the $50 along. Each time it is passed a note needs to be sent to me.

The first person to get a job needs to contact me when they pay it forward and they will get a prize (valued at more than $100).

Introducing Monster Power Match23

26Switched to banking regulations instead of banking. More precise, and found relevant skills. Recruiters dont need deep industry knowledge the system knows whats important so it makes the recruiters smarter

Top skills and years of experience show up at the top of the resume search results. Green dots appear over words that were included in search

27Tool figured out general counsel is the same as attorney. Remember, all we put in was job title attorney. It knew it was the same.

28Matched skills are jelly dotted, but all skills are listed. This is completely unique to Monster. Seeker doesnt put this in. System extracts it automatically. People used to want to view the resume because they didnt trust resume view, but this view is now seen as more powerful because its accurate.

29System knows TLIA is Truth in Lending Act and its related to banking

30Search results are done in-line, dont need to go back to initial search and start over.

31Logfile analysis, media placement are tied to online media

32Logfile analysis, media placement etc are tied to online media

33Top sales rep

34System identifies top sales rep as a skill.

35Indicator of top sales rep honoree

36These bullets show they are a top sales rep e.g., top 5% of sales force, etc. But she doesnt say top sales rep anywhere. We understand the context of the resume.

37Side-by-side comparison of up to 5 candidates., Recruiters LOVE this. It makes them look like geniuses.

38Idea, allow recruiter to include notes at bottom. People like it a lot.

41First results are good

42But you quickly see results that are not good.

43Same kinds of results on standard Monster too. Many irrelevant jobs

44Got back 2 jobs on Monster. They are the only jobs that are the right jobs.Next Steps45

Final Pearls of WisdomWhenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell 'em, 'Certainly I can!' Then get busy and find out how to do it.- Theodore RooseveltEmergencies have always been necessary to progress. It was darkness which produced the lamp. It was fog that produced the compass. It was hunger that drove us to exploration. And it took a depression to teach us the real value of a job. - Victor HugoAll Happiness comes from thinking of others.
