Fourth Sunday of Easter

Sister Anne Powers, RSM, enjoyed looking out the rectory office window at this cherry tree in bloom. On the 3rd anniversary of her death, Msgr. Flynn blessed and dedicated this tree in her memory. Usually at its peak around April 24th, it blossomed about 2 weeks later this year. To see this in color, view this bulletin online at www.stmarkseagirt.com or better yet, stop by the rectory to see for yourself!

“Tis the month of our Mother, the blessed and beautiful days!” Thus went the hymn we chanted back in l950 at St. Elizabeth’s school in Linden. Two-by-two, we paraded out into the courtyard to sing anthems to, and crown, our Blessed Mother. How my heart swelled with pride as I sang out hymn after hymn! My partner, a sweet soul, had the misfortune of having a voice which sounded like a cat scratching a chalkboard. All of a sudden there was Mother Concillia, parading up and down the troops, ever vigilant for a sour note. Having heard the string of off-key notes, Mother stopped dead in her tracks, her sensitive ears picking up the sour notes streaming on the May breeze. Coming near us, she was zeroing in for the kill. She leaned in, and mistakenly thinking it was my voice that was sending chills down her spine, she whispered to me “lower your voice.” It took every fiber of my 10 year old soul not to scream out “It’s not me! It’s not me!” It was right then and there that I started working off my time in Purgatory.

Our month started out on May 1st with a memorial to St. Joseph, the Worker–my hero and hero to the little boy who played in the wood shavings of their small shop. This Sweet Innocent who would one day save the world from their sins would look up to Joseph and say: “Abba, Abba tell me again, tell me again about the little boy who slew the giant all by himself.” May 13th is the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. Mary’s message still rings true for today. Repent and pray the Rosary! Her Rosary is indeed a weapon against evil. Each bead smashing the bonds that hold this world in captivity. So simple--why don’t we listen? May 22nd is the feast of St. Rita of Cascia, the saint of the impossible. Rita is my spiritual Godmother, as I was baptized on her feast day and I have been known to be impossible at times.

My dear sisters and brothers in Christ, let us remember those that suffer: the sick, the elderly, the poor, and the souls in purgatory. Let us lift up to Mary our children, our grandchildren, the unemployed, the addicted, the conflicted, families in crisis, those who cannot forgive, those who have deeply hurt us, those seeking spiritual growth, our priests and religious who serve us so faithfully, especially our own Pastor, Monsignor Sean Flynn. We pray for our church, being martyred all over the world. We pray for Pope Francis, his health and welfare, and his intentions. God bless us, each one and hear and answer every prayer written in our petition books. Amen.

Fatima Peace Plan

If we are not required to believe in Private Revelations as articles of faith, then why bother with them at all? A classic view on this matter was expressed by Pope Urban VIII. Referring to Marian private revelations in particular, he stated: “In cases which concern private revelations, it is better to believe than not to believe, for, if you believe, and it is proven true, you will be happy that you have believed, because our Holy Mother asked it. If you believe, and it should be proven false, you will receive all blessings as if it had been true, because you believed it to be true.” (Pope Urban VIII, 1623-44).

St Paul directs us as well, “Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything; retain what is good.” (1 Thess 5:19-21).

A vision, apparition, or locution is either supernatural in origin (from God) or it is not. To be established as Supernatural (Constat de Supernaturalitate), an apparition judged supernatural, formerly called worthy of belief, has manifested signs or evidence of being an authentic or truly miraculous intervention from heaven. This judgment is possible when there is evidence of supernatural phenomena, sound doctrine, moral probity, mental health and sound piety of the seer(s) and enduring good fruits among the faithful. When ecclesiastical recognition comes officially from the Pope for the apparition site (and not just by him making a positive statement), the approval usually is shown by assigning the apparition a feast day on the Church Liturgical calendar or by canonizing the seer(s).

Almighty God tells us in Holy Scripture that the Blessed Virgin will defeat the devil, his followers and plots: “I will put enmities between thee and the Woman, and thy seed and Her seed: She shall crush thy head and thou shalt lie in wait for Her heel.” (Gen. 3:15).

In Her appearances at Fatima, the Mother of God solemnly promised us final victory over the forces of evil in our own time: “In the end, My Immaculate Heart will triumph, the Holy Father will consecrate Russia to Me, Russia will be converted and a period of peace shall be given to mankind.”

Because the warnings that Our Lady gave the world at Fatima are so stern and terrible,

many have mistakenly characterized Her Message as “apocalyptic.” Yet at the heart

of the Fatima Message is the promise of peace which the Blessed Virgin offers to all people of faith and good will. In both its simplicity and its universality, Our Lady's Message is a unique Heaven-sent opportunity for all people everywhere to work for a real, lasting peace in our homes, churches and nations.

“If people do what I tell you, many, souls will be saved and there will be

peace.” Our Lady's Peace Plan is founded on three simple, but powerful requests. The first is a request for

prayer, most particularly the Holy Rosary and the devotion of the Brown

Scapular. The second calls for us to make reparation for the sins and

outrages perpetrated against God's Grace and blasphemies against the Holy Hearts of

Jesus and Mary. The third request is for consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary,

both on a personal basis and, publicly, that of Russia by the Pope and all the world's bishops.

Prayer

Each time the Blessed Virgin appeared to the three children at Fatima, She repeated Her requests that we pray the Rosary each day. In the final vision, on October 13, 1917, Our Lady silently held out the brown scapular of Mount Carmel as a sign of Her desire that we undertake this great devotion. In fact, Sister Lucy has stated that “the Scapular and the Rosary are inseparable.”

Repara on

At Fatima, Our Lady told the seers that Our Lord is much offended by sin and declared that “people must amend their lives and ask pardon for their sins.” She also told them that She would return later to ask for a new devotion of reparation in order to save souls. Showing the young nun a Heart encircled by thorns, Our Lady told her to announce to the world in Her Name that She would assist, at the moment of death, all those who, on the First Saturday of five consecutive months, confessed,

(Continued on page 9)

received Holy Communion, recited five decades of the Rosary and spent 15 minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary with the intention of making reparation to Her.

Consecra on

To consecrate is to make holy, to dedicate to God and to declare as sacred. Our Lady's Plan for Peace is a call to both personal and public consecration. In accordance with Holy Gospel, the Mother of God asks each of us to consecrate our lives to Her Immaculate Heart, letting it become our gateway to Her Son, Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. At the same time, Our Lady also asks the Church to publicly acknowledge Her divinely-appointed role as the Mediatrix of all Graces and Queen of Peace by consecrating Russia to Her Immaculate Heart in a public ceremony by the Pope and all the world's Catholic bishops. “By this means,” She promises, “to convert that poor nation” and bring peace to the world. Speaking to Sister Lucy, Our Lord has confirmed that it is His intention that this great public act shall glorify His Blessed Mother's Immaculate Heart throughout the world. Deriving as it does from charity or selfless love, the act of consecration is the single most important element in Our Lady's Plan for Peace.

Fa ma Prophecies Fulfilled

Fatima is undoubtedly the most prophetic of modern apparitions. The first and second parts of the “three secrets” refer especially to the frightening vision of hell, devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, World War II, and finally the prediction of the immense damage that Russia would do to humanity by abandoning the Christian faith and embracing Communist totalitarianism. In all of Russia today, there are only 300,000 Catholics, much less than 1% of the Russian population.

By comparison, after Our Lady appeared at Guadalupe, Mexico in the 16th Century, more than 7 million Mexicans converted to the Catholic Faith within nine years and Mexico became a Catholic country.

Since Her apparition in 1917, Our Lady of Fatima accurately predicted the following events:

○ the end of World War I, ○ the emergence of Russia as a world power which

would “spread its errors (including Communism) throughout the world...raising up wars and persecutions against the Church”,

○ the election of a Pope named Pius XI, and ○ the end of World War I was still one year in the

future. Our Lady of Fatima told the three children, “... when you shall see a night illuminated by an unknown light …” , it would herald the next great war. Indeed, across Europe and the US, “northern lights” appeared before the start of World War II (see page 10).

Fatima Peace Plan (continued)

About Private Revela ons God con nues to reveal Himself to individuals "not

indeed for the declara on of any new doctrine of faith, but for the direc on of human acts" (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica).

The second kind of private revela on comes through appari ons. The person who receives an appari on is not necessarily far along in the spiritual life, though they are typically humble and simple souls. God grants this grace for the good of the Church and not as the fruit of contempla ve prayer. Such private revela ons cannot correct or add anything essen ally new to Public Revela on; however, they may contribute to a deeper understanding of the faith, provide new lines of theological inves ga on (such as suggested by the revela ons to St. Margaret Mary on the Sacred Heart), or recall mankind prophe cally to the living of the Gospel (as at Fa ma).

No private revela on can ever be necessary for salva on, though its content may obviously coincide with what is necessary for salva on as known from Scripture and Tradi on. A private revela on may recall wayward individuals to the faith, s r the devo on of the already pious, encourage prayer and penance on behalf of others, but it cannot subs tute for the Catholic faith, the sacraments and hierarchical communion with the Pope and bishops.

On January 25, 1938, Northern lights were seen all over Europe and as far south as southern Australia, Sicily, Portugal and across the Atlantic to Bermuda and southern California. Crowds in Vienna awaiting the imminent birth of a royal baby cheered the aurora as a good sign. The immense arches of crimson light with shifting areas of green and blue, radiated from a brilliant Auroral Crown near the zenith, instead of appearing as usual in parallel lines. It was later tied to the Fatima prophesies. Here are news headlines from newspapers and science journals, discussing the phenomenon which occurred a mere 48 days before World War II began.

CYO News by Mary Reilly

“The most important person on earth is a mother. She cannot claim the honor of having built Notre Dame Cathedral. She need not. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedral—a dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby’s body…the angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God’s creative miracle to bring new saints to heaven; only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God than any other creature. God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation. What on God’s earth is more glorious than this—to be a mother?” Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty

Happy Mother’s Day to our heavenly Mother Mary and all our mothers in heaven and on earth!!!!!!!
