Another month has come and gone at Monsignor Doyle, and we

even had an extra day this February to spread love and

kindness and walk humbly with God. We ate pancakes together,

started Lent by humbly wearing ashes on our foreheads, and we

a musical/play in place of a traditional liturgy on Holy Thursday March 24th at 9:30 am.

You are invited to join us. Our Easter holiday will start at 11:05 am on Thursday March

24th and we will resume classes on Monday April 4th.

staff and students brought in 6444 items at their school. Both schools embraced the

challenge and the results were out of this world!! In total both

schools contributed in excess of 14,652 items to our veterans!

(Nearly double last year’s total.)

This year our challenge was by homerooms and our grade 6

students took an early lead, and while the difference was small

on Thursday, they pulled it out and won the challenge for 2016

with a total of 1263 items!! Congratulations! In second place

were Mrs. Evans’ grade 3 students with 981 items. We will be acknowledging our grade

6 students with a Pizza and Movie party at the end of the month.

Our grade 5 students will be doing a service project by going on a field trip to help sort

these items at the Veteran’s Food Band.

As always, we would like to thank our ongoing sponsors:

Canada Safeway/Sobeys; Brite Signs; Boston Pizza Crowfoot;

and of course our military friends from The Kings Own Calgary

Regiment for spending the day with us and sharing their military

knowledge and assistance!

One final thank you to all of you for helping to improve the lives

of our veterans and their families! This food drive truly was a

wonderful display of community social justice and a ‘coming

together’ for both Monsignor Doyle and St. Vincent schools!

THE LORD STRATHCONA’S MUSICAL RIDE…. Please remember to mark in your calendars the very special date of Monday, June

13th, when the 21-horse Lord Strathcona’s Musical Ride returns to Monsignor Doyle to

entertain and meet the students. It will be an ‘all day’ event with one-on-one classroom

time both indoors and out, concluding with an all new Musical Ride Presentation in the

afternoon at 1:00 pm. All families are welcome and encouraged to join this exciting

event!

We have a great group of students from grade 3-6 who have been

watching out for students who need a little help playing at recess

and at lunch. Our Play Leader Peace Patrol team is a voluntary

group of students who lead activities outside at recess and lunch.

They have a bin of equipment they use to provide various activities

outside for anyone who needs someone to play with. We have 4-5

students for each day so they take turns leading activities. We would like to thank

Jamie, Ian, Zack, Bennett, Adison, Sam, Jocelyn, Nadine, Chiara, Gwen, Cassie,

Georgia, Marina, Sydney, Kaidyn, Olivia A. and Jersey for their leadership. If anyone

has any ideas of good recess games or if you have sports/games equipment you would

like to donate please contact the office.

Progress Reports go home on Friday, March 11th, 2016, so

please check your child’s backpack!

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on Thursday, March 17th from 4:00 – 7:00 pm, and all day on Friday, March 18th from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon, and 1:00 – 3:00 pm. There are NO CLASSES all day on Friday, March 18th, 2016.

We had a wonderful evening on February 24th, when we celebrated Anti-Bullying Day with stories and family connection time. Jeff Stockton is a story teller and harpist. He used harp music to create a calm, pleasant atmosphere for his storytelling. We enjoyed a wonderful story where parents and students laughed and relaxed. After the story and instructions, families went to stations throughout the school during where they shared, brainstormed and imagined things like action words, funny events, and great final sentences for their stories. Then families found a comfy place to create a story together. Some families have sent in their ‘final draft’ of their family story and we will share some of these at our next assembly. Being connected to people we love and spending time with them is the building block to wellness for our students as well as parents. Thank you to our School Council who sponsored the event and provided cookies and milk.

The next School Council Meeting will be Wednesday, March 9th at

6:30 pm. Please consider coming to the meeting to be engaged

in your child(ren)’s school and become aware of all that goes on

at Monsignor Doyle.

Pope Francis declared this year, “The Year of Divine Mercy”, a

Jubilee year.

We are called during this year to show and tell about God’s

mercy. The Jubilee door in the Vatican has sixteen panels

which depict scenes related to Reconciliation in our lives.

The Monsignor Doyle Jubilee door is located in the front

display case as you enter the building. It has fifteen windows,

each depicting a Catholic symbol. Each class was

commissioned to depict an image which has been used to

create beautiful faux stained glass panels.

We hope you are inspired by these panels and continue to show and tell of God’s mercy

to all you meet.

Every year, teachers from the City of Calgary gather for teachers’ convention. For families it means some extra days to spend in the mountains or at hockey arenas but for teachers it is much needed professional development time. Teachers at Monsignor Doyle shared highlights from their time spent at convention at our recent staff meeting. Some focused on learning how to bring our Learning Commons to life with activities and equipment ideas (like green screens and 3D printers). Others attended math workshops where they learned fun new games and received tools and ideas to use with their classes. Some looked at bringing some new ideas for utilizing our garden space by attending sessions dealing with learning about our natural world. Our teachers continue to learn every day as lifelong learners.

Friday is pick up day if you have any refundable beverage cartons, bottles or cans you would like to contribute to the school – fundraising for the Learning Commons. Please leave your bags by the green bins near the parking lot. We thank Shelley and Anna who take the recycling to the depot. So far this year we have collected $679.15. You can also drop off your recycling at the Crowfoot Bottle Depot and indicate that you wish to donate your refund to Monsignor Doyle School’s account.

Congratulations Calista Pyszniak from 4V!

Calista started playing the piano when she was 5 ½ years old, the year she started

kindergarten at Monsignor Doyle. She quickly showed that she had a natural talent in

playing the piano. As a result, she was encouraged by her piano instructors to follow the

Royal Conservatory of Music program. At the age of 8, she took her first exam -

“Preparatory B” – and got a score of 88 which is considered “First Class Honours”. This

past January, Calista had her second practical exam – “Level 2” and received an

outstanding score of 92 which is considered “First Class Honours with Distinction”.

Calista has proven that with dedication and practice, you can achieve your goals.

At the start of February, we also hosted the St Peter’s

Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw. This

competition was open to any students from our school and

other schools within the parish boundaries aged 9-14. We

had a good turnout of Monsignor Doyle students, and

were well represented in the various age/gender groups.

All students who participated received a personalized

certificate of recognition and the top scorer in each

age/gender group received a basketball to keep! Some of

our students have been asked to represent the parish at

the regional Basketball Free Throw in Okotoks in March!

Well done everyone and thanks for participating!

(Additional photos of the many participants are available on our website in the Twitter feed.)
